The Callisto Protocol - Spiritual Dead Space successor

Having looked at the stuttering in the PC footage I've seen, there no way on this God's Earth anyone should get that version. I've not seen anything like it in such a high profile release.

I sometimes wonder when stuff like that is being reported if it is a bit overblown, like how in Elden Ring it was quite bad at launch but happened only at specific points when traversing the world so I never had a big issue personally. But not in this case - CP on PC really is an utterly broken looking mess.

They patched it just before your post, no idea if it's entirely fixed or not but I expect they're just changing a 0 to a 1 in the ini file.

Absolutely loved the first couple hours. The melee system is awesome, the dodge mechanic followed by smashing limbs off is proper visceral and nasty.

Had a couple 2/3 enemy fights and seems easy enough to control. I've heard there's spitters later on though which could send it a bit wild.

Atmosphere and sound are top notch. Headphones on, it's a glorious thing. And again, the graffix lads. Definitely feels like it'll be a cult classic.

From a purely technical standpoint, despite having a PC that is more than up to the job on paper, if many future PC releases are going to keep having the kinds of stutter issues that seem to be becoming very common now I'm just going to have to get a bloody PS5 after all.

I’ve done 9 hours so far, I don’t think I’m that close to the end and I’ve been taking my time doing lots of exploring.

I’ve mostly had a great time and I haven’t encountered any bugs to the best of my knowledge (and if I have, I didn’t notice them).

There are a couple of sections that feel a bit too long and repetition creeps in. It could probably benefit from a few more set pieces to break things up or more NPC’s to chat with.

The story is about what you’d expect, I don’t think it will win any awards but it’s good (so far) for the setting of the game. I think the voice acting is very good also and this is enhanced by how real the characters faces look.

I think you could probably call this a 360

era game with current gen visuals and production. I mean this in a good way.

The game consistently looks stunning with only the occasional static backdrop letting it down. For the most part it’s probably the prettiest game I’ve seen so far this generation.

I think combat is pretty good once you get to grips with it and surviving a multiple enemy encounter and is very satisfying - there’s a real weight to the melee side of things and stoving a zombies head in with a crowbar or your baton is very enjoyable. As is blowing them up, throwing them into fans, impaling them on spikes and shooting them full of holes.

For me, it’s going to be a one and done. I’ve probably missed a voice log here or there or a hidden area or two but I don’t think I’ll be rushing into a second play through.  But then again, I don’t often replay games anyway. If the story dlc turns out to be good then I’ll be tempted to try that out.

Playing on the PS5 don’t disagree with many of the positive and negative comments so far. It’s absolutely stunning in places but does feel like a 360 era game and has a few balancing issues.

One little thing that is just bizarre but an absolute reflection of this getting rushed is the pause menu. The text is white on black and the selection the most subtle of brightness adjustments. It’s complete luck what you select. Trivial but such a basic thing to overlook.

I’ve been watching play through videos on YouTube and it looks stunning with great voice acting. Like proper craftsmanship. It looks like a 10/10 game.

But then I read the comments from disgruntled Dead Space fans.

Seems like the director/lead designer did a poor job. Which is sad because the world needs more non-Halo, non-Mass Effect sci-fi.

They're kind of full of shit though. Dead Space was fantastic because you could blow the limbs off Necromorphs, not because you didn't know why they were turning into things you could have great fun blowing the limbs off.

That last one's nothing new either, audio recordings are a dumb trope but they were also in Dead Space so it's not exactly a step down. The fact it apparently doesn't have any bullshit puzzles is also a massive plus in my book. I just got off Ragnarok and... hoo boy.

Audio files that you find but need to drop out of play to listen to. Why?

It worked perfectly in Doom 3. In fact, Doom 3 is the best example of how to do audiologs. edit: after System Shock 2 that is.

Well, according to that one video review it is straight out broken by design (auto aim while facing multiple enemies) Not sure ho you can defend that and claim theres something wrong with gamers "these days".

edit:

The game has had a pile on of negativity since launch - it’s funny tough that half of the people think it’s great and the other half don’t. Hmm - I wonder that they have actually played it more than 30mins? (Or played it at all).

Granted the combat takes abit of getting used to as it’s not dead space controls, like everyone seemed to be expecting but it looks amazing with insane production values, sound design and graphical effects/lighting. Best enjoyed on a 4k display and a good sound system, not by watching a 1080p compressed stream demoed on YouTube, which is probably where most of the ‘reviews’ originate from.

Just like Cyberpunk! If you read the steam reviews there are some really fleshed out explanations. Its not all "lol this game sux balls".

I actually wrote in the post you are referring to that  it looks amazing. And steam has 6057 negative reviews.

As stated in an earlier post, it seems the game suffers from actual design/mechanics choices on behalf of the director.

Could there be a link to poor pc technical performance at launch and those 6000+ Negative steam reviews?

A big patch dropped last night, (at least for the series x), so maybe that’s fixed the  issues. The combat without assists make it a pretty hard game. Maybe that’s putting people off as well?. Anyway, for me the vibes are more dead space than anything, and the death sequences are very visceral ‘last of us’.  I spent a good 10mins tweaking camera options/ assists etc to my liking as well which made to controls a lot better.

I cant remember the audiologs in Far Cry 2 to be perfectly honest :o

You can find tapes where the Jackal is talking to the journalist you meet in the bar at the start of the game. They are really short (not least because the Jackal talks so quickly) but really flesh out his character, and cause you to reflect on both his actions and your own as a player:

Less than ten minutes for a game you can easily play for a hundred hours, they are spot on.

Now I remember! Damn, I miss old far cry. The atmosphere were great. And exploring Africa was fantastic.

Indeed. A game actually worth remaking / remastering, and the one we’ll probably never see.
