Same here. I might as well just vote for TLOU2 and I haven't even finished that.

Can I not just write Bloodborne in every section?

Looking at the Game Awards nominees I’ve done pretty well in playing 4/6 of the games listed in the actual year they were released usually I’m playing catch-up and play a year later.

@Jolly Do we have a cut-off for games released this year? I was watching the EZA podcast yesterday and they mentioned that for The Game Awards they have a mid November cut off so any games released later like Cyberpunk did not qualify for any nominations.

I make it a policy to pos people who include comments with their lists, but I just wanted to also comment that that's a fantastic selection.

Lie, go back to page 1 and give me my pos

The cut off is usually the voting deadline. Unless @Jolly disagrees?

Ok that rules out Cyberpunk getting any votes for me then, I won't be playing that until the PS5 update at some point next year.

Yeah, the voting deadline makes sense to me. You can vote for something released December 31st if you really fancy.

Cyberpunk will definitely count. I can understand why The Game Awards might do it as they can just draw a line and guarantee that they include it in 2021. Somone else with a more avant garde interpretation of the Gregorian calendar may well do next years RLLMUK awards and I can't guarantee a smooth transition of power.

Yeah, the major flaw of the awards when I did them was that I didn't put together a calendar of every day that a game I'd liked had come out that year, and then used that to restrict voting:

"Brothers: A Tale of Two Souls? Sorry, that came out August 7 2013, which as you can see features no new games that I like, so is ineligible for inclusion :( "

Damn, those would have been some good awards.

Game of the Year

A1. Animal Crossing New Horizons - This got me, and especially my wife, through lockdown.  Just being able to go for a walk, swim, was so relaxing and a break from the Covid madness of the real world.

A2. Star Wars Squadrons - I’m a huge unashamed SW Nerd and this is just awesome.  I don’t get much time to play it so I’m magnificently shit, I don’t have VR or HOTAS so it’s just on the TV with a DA4 but I love it.

A3. Fortnite - The Marvel Season - Ok so I know that technically Fortnite wasn’t released this year, but I have loved the Marvel Season.  It got me back into Fortnite, and it also meant that I was able to play duos and squads with my son which was lovely, including getting our first wins together.

A4.

A5.

Biggest Disappointment of the Year

Z1.  Being skint so no PS5

Z2. Scummy delivery company bastards stealing PS5’s and replacing them with cat food.  Obviously didn’t affect me but that must have been really annoying for anyone who was

Z3. Lego Star Wars Skywalker collection being delayed, again, until 2021.  It’s not Cyberpunk levels of ambition, and is clearly finished, so why keep delaying it?

  • Jolly changed the title to The RLLMUK Game of the Year Awards 2020 - VOTING DEADLINE 31/12/20
1 hour ago, Benny said:

I assume you're wondering why Half Life Alyx isn't on more lists. Well, it does help a game to get played by more people if it doesn't have so many barriers to entry to be fair.

I think it is the game of the year, but I know it wont be because not as many people had the means to play it like you say. It seems unfair really if we are just going on pure gameplay experience and design etc etc.

To be fair, if anyone who's played Alyx can confirm whether its core appeal is distinct from previous Half-Life games - i.e. it's not just a [not particularly good] shooting gallery attached to a series of heavily-scripted set-pieces and a [mediocre] sci-fi story laden with [too much, monologued] exposition - then I'd be interested in trying it.

Basically, does it do for Half-Life what Breath of the Wild and Ground Zeroes did their respective series - i.e. take a distinctly different approach to the series formula, leading to a dramatically different game? Valve did, after all, put out the Portal games, so it's not as though they've never made games I've loved.

I didn't say either of them did anything for any genres,* just that they offered significant deviation from their series of origin. You're actually kind of evidencing what I mean; Breath of the Wild is notably divisive, particularly among Zelda fans, precisely because it's quite different from other games in the series. Stuff like the degrading weapons, extremely open world, puzzle shrines rather than dungeons, the extensive crafting - all elements that mark it as unusual as far as Zelda games are concerned.

Those deviations can mark it as an improvement for some (e.g. me), and as, well, outright deviant for others. My question, then, is does Alyx deviate significantly from the basic design/appeal of Half-Life 1 & 2s?

*though if I were to argue that, I suppose I'd be pointing to the open world adventure genres that they both co-opted in their own ways. Though, in both cases, they're more interesting amalgamators than outright innovators.

I have a PC and VR! However, I also expect Alyx to be overrated pap like the rest of its series, so haven't bothered trying it.

Half Life: Alyx plays a bit like going up and down a road in Google Street View but with added shooting.

There’s some real American cookbook vibe in some of these nominations.

Seriously though can we please have an explanation of what this means? I'm losing sleep.

Fair play, you did, and that's a different thing. :)

As for Half Life Alyx, it's presently my game of the year, and I will be writing more about it once I've finalised my list.
