Mass Effect Legendary Edition

Another big patch. The Day 1 patch was 11GB, the next was 11GB, and the latest is 13.5GB. I try to avoid big downloads by getting games on physical, but oh well.

I'm still on ME1 as well. I'm struggling to enjoy it to be honest. I loved all 3 games at the time -- I still think ME1 has great universe-building and imagination, and it always reminded me of Babylon 5 except a lot cooler. But it's been a bit frustrating to play:

- I haven't got to grips with combat at all. Biotic selection is clunky and I often miss: I choose an attack from the wheel, click where I want it to go... then Shepard slowly flings the space magic and misses the target. I'd also like better tutorials or descriptions for how to effectively use biotics. Modern games have a thumbnail video to show each power, and I underestimated how useful that is.

- So I'm not having much fun using biotics, which is a shame since I chose Vanguard. I didn't want to be a boring vanilla soldier like last time, and thought it'd be great fun throwing enemies around with space magic. But I can't get to grips with the selection wheel and the targeting. I wish I'd just been a soldier.

- I don't understand why all characters can have all 4 weapons. Party members need to be stopped from using weapons they have no skill in. My Shepard is only supposed to use pistols and shotguns... yet I often pull out the sniper rifle because it gets shit done - no other bugger is going to hit distant targets, so I might as well. Sort of makes a mockery of the class systems.

- I wish you could equip and level up ALL characters when standing on the Normandy. Why do you have to go all the way to the lower deck lockers, and why do you have to wait until taking someone on a mission to work on their skill points?

- I actually always loved driving the Mako around. I never understood it's bad reputation. It's still fun... but I forgot the copy&paste gameplay on planets. It's literally the same building every time! I've done some planetary missions that were so boring I thought they might be broken.

- Technical stuff: I'm on PS4 Pro (won't give CEX or scalpers the satisfaction with their £800 PS5s). I hoped to play on 60fps "Performance" but had to switch to 30fps "Quality" when the Citadel caused worse screen tearing than I've ever seen in a videogame before. The game can really chug sometimes too -- perhaps that's making combat less fun. Apparently this could be helped if they offered a 1080p mode, but they don't.

Alright, I'll say one good thing. I'm trying to play Renegade this time, since I was such a boring hero the first time. I was hesitant to take renegade choices because I thought it'd just make Shepard a dumb ignorant jerk. But it's been pretty interesting. It makes Shepard flawed. The Council members are saying that humans are too young and reckless to be on the Council or to be Spectres... and a Renegade Shepard proves them right. Instead of feeling like a perfect hero who always knows best, I feel like a basic flawed scumbag who bullies and cons people into thinking I'm a hero.

I’d forgotten how Saren wanted to unite synthetics & organic, cure the genophage & tell the council where to stick it. And they vilified him for it until he couldn’t take it any longer.

A few years later Shepard wants a medal for attempting the same shit.

@SqueakyG- I felt similarly to you. Knock it down to Casual and just play it for the story. The combat is shite. Once you get to ME2 it improves massively and you can put the difficulty back up. That's what I've done, anyway: 1 on Casual and 2 on Insanity. And ignore any non-story sidequests.

there are many moments of ME one that are hard coded into my memory. Three of them really stand out on the first hour or so:

Spoiler

1) the title screen music. I still remember hearing it for the first time.

2) reading the initial text. I remember I did not know what the game title meant until I read this for the first time. Such a cool name.

3) the counsil hearing on Saren when he says "this meeting has no purpose". I still react the same way "this cunt".

On that last one I remember particularly thinking in the moment how fucking well written this dialogue was compared with anything else in games at the time. I really wanted to punch him in the face. He ended up killing himself though before I could.

Saren is Jeremy Corbyn?

No! Just the ones on 1 where you have to use the stupid Mako to drive across boring brown planets.

Thanks - never played any of them so looking forward to getting through them in the best / quickest way possible!

Yeah most of the side quests are go to planet, drive horrible vehicle, fight in one of the two different models of bases they have with exact same layout everytime.

Wrex and Garrus side quests are worth doing for their characters.

Anything related to Cereberus *maybe* to add a bit of context to ME2 but really don’t expect much other than to get bored of every planet having have same 3 room base.

I completed the Overlord DLC for Mass Effect 2 last night. Wow, what a great bit of DLC it was, I actually forgot all about it as the last time I played through the games was on the 360. Such a good atmosphere.

The first time I played ME3 I was sure that the last section on Earth was going to involve me taking a Mako (possibly leading a fleet of the bastards) up against a Reaper. Would have been perfect.

I feel like a muppet for asking, but how do I access ANY of the story DLC in ME3? Both Omega and Leviathan are not there, and I’m right before the point of no return 🙄

Omega - Aria should have invited you to talk, then you'll have an alternate dock to visit at the citadel

Leviathan - You should have had a message from Hackett about Dr Bryson, after that you'll again have an alternate dock at the citadel.

edit: never mind, you have to read the emails you receive by leaving the cursor on it for about one second 😒

You mean you have to actually, y'know, read the email. ;)

What calibration settings are folks with LG OLEDS using?

It's odd. For the brightness I go no higher than 800 nits for all games.

For contrast, on ME1 I think I had it at default. But for ME2 and 3 I've gone -1 for a little less contrast. If you go as dark as the game suggests it's way too fucking dark for my liking.

 I'm on an LG C9 65"

@Fargo For the CX, check you don't have Dynamic tone mapping on as well. Initially it gives some extra pop to the image but completely fucks with your white levels and gets brightness calibration all wrong. So make sure it's off or you use HGiG (although I don't think that makes a difference unless it's a compatible game). You get a much more natural picture with it off anyway.

I'm a little way into ME2 and I've noticed how shite the human squadmates are*. Ashley, Kaiden, Jacob, Miranda, Zaeed.. all boring AF, whereas the aliens are brilliant.

* Kasumi is pretty cool I guess.

This is the story in all three games. Stop trying to make me care about your human characters, Bioware, it isn't going to happen.*

* bar Gabby and Kenneth, naturally

I liked Miranda (she’s OP in ME2)

Jacob is dull as dishwater though - I nearly forgot who he was in ME3 when he turns up. Next time he’s going in the vents.

Zaeed is one note.

I really like Kaiden - he gets growth and arc in ME3 and nice perspective. it’s actually amazing how much he gets in ME3 whereas Ashley gets nothing.

But you’re right most of the best characters are alien

There would be a temptation to just use Tali and Garrus for literally everything.

I tend to default to Garrus and Mordin all the time at the moment.

As an aside though, and totally tempting fate, this is probably the first game I've played on ps5 that hasn't crashed. Weird.

Just finished 3. The final couple of hours are mind numbing bad. Thinking of choosing the poorest possible final choice just as a fuck you to the game. What a dumpster fire.

edit: hold up, none of the completion trophies popped. Don’t tell me it’s because of the final choice I made.
