For me indie games are now more AAA than the actual triple fucking A - but then that’s what happens when something becomes mainstream. All mainstream art - be it cinema, music, books - is all absolute shite, now video games have joined that list. And indie games have really excelled and come to the fore this gen - they destroy everything else now.

I actually think PC wins out for me this time, mainly because all the games I wanted to play bar Bloodborne and Mario Odyssey could be played on it, in shiniest versions of themselves. On a pc I built 6/7 years ago! Shrug.

Switch. Hands down. Although I’d say it’s next generation and shouldn’t be on this list.

I don’t get where the love for PS4 exclusives come from, it’s all just the same pretty but excruciatingly linear and dull adventure games. Which is a shame as Sony’s first party line ups used to be very varied. IMO both the PS4 and Xbone have been hugely disappointing, not a patch on the PS3/360. Here’s hoping that the next lot are a huge improvement.

The switch is great for first party games if you didn't have a wii u and somewhat less so if you did/do.

I'm going with  Wii U and Vita.

As for whether xbox one or ps4 had the superior exclusives.. I have zero interest in the big cinematic games Sony put out but I'll go with Sony because of psvr.

PS4 being the only console to offer VR is the clincher for me too. Even if you don’t like the big releases like TLOU2, GoW, Spiderman or Horizon, nothing beats affordable VR at home. Astrobot, Polybius and Wipeout are unbelievable exclusives and multiformat stuff like Squadrons gives an experience in VR simply not available on other consoles.

Really hope Xbox gets VR in the new gen.

Hands down PS4 for me.

Yakuza 0 and 6

Judgment

Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise

Nobunaga’s Ambition

Esp Ra De Sai

Game Tengoku

Battle Garegga

Odin Sphere

I realise a lot of the games are re-releases or remakes, but they are so good.

The best format for me has got to be the below. Ignore the poor old WiiU, it'll be retired to the bedroom and the corner of yesteryear very soon.

Not even being a smart arse. I love games on each format to the point of being unable to choose.

Switch has blown me away with both BotW and Odyssey, plus a ton of great indies I've enjoyed in portable, Master Blaster etc etc.

PS4 has had incredible games like HZD and TLoU2, GoW, Driveclub etc etc.

PSVR is a trip to another dimension with shit like Astro Bot, REZ and Tetris Effect plus many more.

Xbox is probably my weakest as I jumped ship after several months to PC, but I loved the Horizon racing games and enjoyed Gears 4 and 5.

Quest has to be in the running for blowing my mind completely open with stuff like Half Life Alyx, Beat Saber and Asgard's Wrath plus several more.

PC has been my go to for multiplatform games, Sekiro at 60fps meant I could never play a multiplatform game on console again. Too many stunning games that despite also being on console take on a better experience over on PC.

So yeah, I honestly just enjoy shit across everything, I couldn't choose one over the other. I had a superb gaming experience with God of War but then the same evening I'd be scaling mountains in BotW or running around City 17. Plus I'm a pretty indecisive tit to boot.

I'll be jumping into the PS5 soon enough but thanks to Gamespass and a powerful PC I'll have no need to go Xbox ever again, unless I get an S for the bedroom but I'll probably just shift the X in there along with the WiiU.

Switch had the best game ever made. As shown time and time again by RLLMUK's Game of the *chooseyourtimeperiod* polls.

Well Resident Evil 4 is released on every format so I don't see why this is relevant.

Switch for me.  Nintendo's big hitters have done the business, and they're now portable too.

Xbone is second, as I've enjoyed Forza Motorsport and Forza Horizon more than anything on PS4.  I can see that PS4 is a more likely choice for fans of action adventure RPGs.

I don't game on PC.

PS4 by a country mile. Best console I’ve ever owned and I’ve owned most of them.

The tentpole Sony first-party exclusives are right up my alley and they’ve been absolutely spectacular this gen. You’re seeing the fruits of a decade or more of investment and trust in those studios and they’ve pretty much all matured into industry leaders for the type of games they make. Can’t begin to imagine what they’re going to do with the PS5 but it’s likely to be extraordinary.

A steady stream of brilliant third-party games and a huge range of inventive and delightful indie games too has meant that I’ve enjoyed an embarrassment of riches in gaming on the PS4 these past 6 years or so. I’ve never been anywhere close to being stuck for something to play.

Nintendo first-party has been fantastic too, with one of the true all-time greats in Breath of the Wild, my personal favourite Mario game and joyful multiplayer brilliance like Splatoon 2 and MK8 Deluxe. When Nintendo do it right they do it better than pretty much anyone and the Switch is the best console they’ve made since the N64 for me, but a number of their franchises like Smash and Pokemon don’t really appeal and so the overall time I’ve spent playing on the machine has been a fraction of that on the PS4.

Xbox has been a sorry joke this gen with one or two exceptions but it looks like they’re going to come roaring back with a vengeance in the upcoming gen and I’ll be there day one with a Series S.

This has been the best generation ever for me as someone who’s been playing games for over 30 years and I expect the next to be even better still.

There has been a lot of great multi format stuff, but purely on exclusives the Switch wins by a country mile. I dislike the trend for the shift away from traditional style games that seems to have been prevalent for the bigger titles from Sony this gen, and Microsoft is still beating the same tired drum it always does (even though I love the Xbox One X). Nintendo are still making interesting games that don't scrimp in the all important gameplay department and they are actually FUN. Having said that, they aren't getting away without critique either for their lazy approach to recycling the Wii U catalogue instead of actually making brand new installments.

If Switch only had BotW and Odyssey it would still get my vote.

I've just bought a Switch and this is all I have at the moment, but well worth the purchase just for these!

But I'd still say PS4. Not so much for the first party stuff, but for JRPGs, Visual Novels and Rhythm Action games, I've had a blast with it (and will be for a long time to come)

I'd say PS4. Bloodborne, Astro Bot Rescue Mission, The Last Guardian, Resogun and The Last of Us: Part II are all truly fantastic games. Bloodborne is probably my favourite game of all-time really. I also really like Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted The Lost Legacy and Spider-Man. The whole 'they're interactive movies' critique is so terribly lazy at this point.* Few games have traversal mechanics as fun as Spidey's for example and I'll take Horizon's machine combat over BotW's incredibly easy and fairly simplistic encounter design any day of the week. Not that BotW doesn't do incredible things on its own, but so does Horizon, just in different areas.

Odyssey I found really cool at first but the more I played it the less I liked it. I found it bloated and a step back from the much more inventive 3D World or the magic of Astro Bot.

*For further evidence of this, just look at the games announced for PS5 so far. There is a cinematic quality to games like Spider-Man Miles Morales and Horizon Forbidden West, but they offer a lot of freedom as well. And that's just the bigger examples. Demon's Souls is an ARPG, Astro's Playroom and Sackboy are 3D platformers. GT7 is a racing game, Destruction AllStars is a car combat game with parkour and Returnal is a a dark sci-fi roguelite with fast-paced bullet hell shoot 'em up combat.

The one I, personally, bought and played the most games for. Other people, having bought the wrong games for it or worse, the wrong console, have mistaken their crass ignorance for good taste, and I will boo them. Booooo

We did well to last as many posts as we did before somebody chimed-in with only Nintendo bringing the FUN.
