What a generation it's been. I'm sure we can all agree! Hahaha. And throughout all of the highs and lows, laughter and tears, genuine excitement, spellbinding joy and mind-numbing distraction from the tightening embrace of death, we're left with the games. And there have certainly been some games!

Which format had the best games

Switch for me.  I wasn’t an early adopter but once in, oh my.  Odessey, AC, MK8, Zelda (yes, technically last gen because it was developed for and came out on the Wii U), sublime gaming.

PS4 is second, but the only exclusive I’ve played is Spider-Man, it’s mainly a Fortnite/Star Wars device for me & my son.

Zelda sucked me in like no other, Odyssey was a delight, and the convenience of the console.. there is only one choice.

PS4 has some crackers, but none have gripped me the same way, and Xbox.. the 360 days are a distant memory.

BOTW on its own is better than the entire output of the PS4. Then you have Splatoon and Odyssey and MK8 and Paper Mario and Yoshi and 3D all stars and a billion indie games.

As with every other generation, Nintendo have made the must-have console. The other manufacturers have made nice to have backup machines.

I don’t own a switch so for me ps4 hands down. It’s got a game on it I actually completed (UC4) ams although a remaster I’m getting there with TLOU. I’ve also played a shed load of Tetris effect and gt sport.

All that said my best buy this generation is a wii u where I’ve played all the switch games - BOTW, MK8, Batonetta 2 and evening ones the switch doesn’t have yet like super Mario 3D world.

So I guess I’d I did have a switch it would be switch!

I think - for me - I've been bitterly disappointed with the AAA output this generation from the big two. It's all spectacle and very little else. However, the emergence of Indies to fill the AA space has more than made up for it. I doubt my top 5 this year would contain a big release at all (maybe Yakuza 7 if I get around to it), so for me the Switch wins hands down. Yes, a lot of these AA games are available elsewhere, but the ease of playing these titles on the Switch means I've played and completed far more of them than I normally would.

If we're talking exclusives, PS4 for me. Switch has BotW, which is probably my GOAT, but I played it on the Wii U. Mario Odyssey is probably my favourite ever Mario Game, but PS4 trumps it when it comes to the quantity of brilliant exclusives: Bloodborne, GoW, TLOU2, Last Guardian, Uncharted 4, Shadow of the Colossus remake - all solid nines or tens out of ten. Apart from Odyssey, all of Switch's best games I played already on the Wii U.

PS4 for me. Horizon: ZD, God of War, Spiderman, The Last Guardian. All absolutely brilliant, and then loads of other great games not quite up there - Ratchet remaster, Rocket League came out first on PS4, Yakuza and Nier were exclusive for ages, etc. I really want to play Ghost of Tsushima, as it looks amazing, but it'll have to wait for PS5.

Switch has only really had Odyssey and BOTW as truly amazing games for me (played MK8 on Wii U). Two incredible games, but I couldn't have done without a PS4 this gen.

Hard disagree. I voted PS4 because Bloodborne but this gen has been shite. Triple A games no longer offer me anything I’m interested in.

I find this really odd. I'm not sure what you're looking for exactly, but there's such a wide variety of quality games on offer on various formats, that I can't understand thinking this. The non-AAA market has never been bigger, and really high quality games in genres that had basically died out are now thriving.

I skipped the XBone this/last gen due to the lack of exclusives. Every game released on XBox One that I wanted to play was also available on PC, so that's where I played them. I bought the PS4 solely to play Bloodborne and the rest of the PS4 exclusives were a bonus (and pretty much actually exclusive)

PlayStation 4 by a landslide for me (last gen my choice would have been the Xbox 360), but I tend to like cinematic narrative heavy games as opposed to more arcadey stuff.

This is me (except for the bit about the 360).

Single player, narrative is my bag, erm, baby.

It’s the triple A console market that has gone in a direction I’m not interested in, which is the only area where generations really mean anything. There’s tonnes of great indie games this gen just like there were last gen and just like there have been on the PC for years now. But the mainstream of games has never been more boring.

Most of the big games this generation are just the same games from last generation but a bit prettier. There’s a dearth of new ideas, and no major investment in pushing hardware to do new or exciting things. Most major releases are just shite movies with ancient gameplay shoved in between the cutscenes.

PS4 exclusives are generally story based affairs that are badly written and terribly paced, which you may as well watch on twitch for all the meaningful choices you get to make. The Switch is Nintendo doubling down on just releasing the same games for the fifth generation in a row, with the notable exception of BOTW, which is actually a Wii U game. The Xbox exclusives list is essentially a bunch of HD remasters of 360 games.

There’s a real lack of any meaningful link between the story and mechanics of most games. The only notable new genre is BR which is hopelessly indebted to PUBG with nobody trying to innovate. I miss publishers spending real money on unproven new ideas designed to push hardware in new directions, rather than just taking an old game and doing it again with some minor twist.

What a load of bollocks.

What a compelling argument. If you like playing 360 games but shinier that’s fine. If you like watching shit movies cut up into sections with 360 gameplay between them that’s fine. I’m just bored of that.
