For me it's a mix of being antisocial and the times I play.

Saying that I don't mind playing with randoms, especially if it isn't all a bunch of kids screaming at you down the headset etc.

Rise has a summoning feature where you can kick off an online mission solo and the game pings other players who are looking to help out, and then it automatically pulls them into your hunt.

Thats what i normally use, rather than hanging about in lobbies waiting for players to arrive or ready themselves.

There's really no need for a mic/headset - the game has so many emotes, stickers, pre-programmed text messages and a built-in chat pad, its very easy to communicate on the fly.  :D

As I work nights I jump on for an hour in the morning for a bit of MP with randoms. Most of which have Japanese looking names.

MP is fine , it's like a hive mind mentally. All trying to get the hunt done . Been stuck on Telstra for 3 days. That thing is angry and apparently that's tame to some of the others .

I’m back on this via Steamdeck and loving it again!

I played the Switch version a lot! Then the Steam version on my laptop until I hit endgame, which coincided with the release of Sunbreak, which I bought, but haven’t really played past the first couple of baby MR1 quests.

Tonight I just played some early Village quests to get my button muscle memory back and try out some of the more advanced optimal weapon combos using switch skill swapping.

All-in-all I had a great evening, including the fetch/gather quests, which may seem like a chore but they’re designed to help you familiarise yourself with the map/area which is extremely useful in the long run.

The first monster took me 44 minutes to kill by hitting it endlessly with a katana. Monster hunter, more like monster marathon.

Use the defender weapon tree from the blacksmith if you need quick kills. Even with a rusty poke stick it shouldn't take anywhere near that long though.

The long sword has a lot of nuance, but an absolute basic is to hit it with YYBB until the gauge at the top left fills, then mash RT and land the final blow to power it up to the next stage. Can do that three times to hit the final form.

The other thing you have to be aware of is the ‘sharpness’ of your weapon.

You’ll notice a weapon meter that is yellow, orange and red. As you hit monsters this goes down, the weapon becomes less effective and as such it takes longer to kill things. You get round this by keeping the weapon sharp during the fight by using a whetstone. It’s on your R radial menu.

Quick question for someone in the know…

Is there separate single player missions and multiplayer missions?

There seems to be a specific quest list in the MP area, that doesn’t seem to affect the missions in the village, at least as far as I can see and wondered if it was possible to play the village missions in MP

Village missions are separate. If you play the village quests far enough you get a sort of license test against a group which allows you to bypass earlier hub quests since you'll be overpowered for them.

You may be able to play the village quests in multi if someone's in your lobby though, I forget.

Also, I took this photo at clearly the wrong time while my dog was moving around:

This is gaming crack again for me.  Been playing solo so far, as is usual for me, all day today.

Just did my first Rampage, yay some tower defense.

Great Sword is as lovely as it usually is,  but I need to work out those switch skills tbh.

I guess it kinda makes sense in that you have to have someone in your world (lobby) in order to play your story mission.

Still, I would just personally expect everything to be on a big MP menu, whether it be story or general and leave it up to people to choose.

I can’t see myself getting far in the village missions (unless I’m forced to, to progress) as I don’t want to play single player and playing them MP relies on someone coming into my lobby.

When I was figuring things out I sat with an open lobby and no one joined. When I joined someone else’s they were just wandering around their village and I ended up quitting out, so I’m not hopeful on this front.

I guess it may change as the game is still new, but I know searching in the MP hub put me in a full game almost instantly every time.

You can online quest but set it so people join you. You start then hopefully other people join you if you don't mind randoms.

Or you search at a board next to the quest maiden counter to join a ongoing quest that you also want to do.

Aha. I don't think you can join them as a SOS style thing while scanning quests in the hub though.

It's a slightly weird setup.

Sorry I wasn't very specific. You can join someone's lobby and mooch around but it's not possible to do Village Quests coop. You can do them solo while in someone's lobby and yeah I wish the SOS had been retained from world

So if you can’t do the village missions coop, what’s the point in going into someone’s lobby?

I convinced my girlfriend to play!

This is, like, HUGE news. None of my partners since Tri released have shown any interest whatsoever in playing, but she gave in after my constant mind games. "So, we'll have some dinner, and then I'll wash the dishes because obviously you need some time to play Monster Hunter." and other things like that. Or, when she loaded Minecraft for the 50th time, I'd say "Have you messed with the graphics settings for Monster Hunter? It looks weird..." I'm not sure if it counts as gaslighting, but it is absolutely not abuse of any kind!

Which means I'm probably able to help people who get stuck on the Game Pass version, and will definitely be up for group hunts. Newbie Monster Hunters are my favourite thing in games, and this being on Game Pass means we will have a LOT of them around now. GT = CheekyLeeTV

To be fair, the time limit is 50 minutes for a reason. I came right up against it back in Tri when beating my first Great Jaggi, and it's still the most epic I ever felt in a videogame. At some point, you'll come up against {presumably} Great Izuchi again, and you'll beat it to a pulp in 3 minutes, even if you have no armour and the most basic of starter weapons. There is a RIDICULOUS amount of depth and skill to every aspect of this series. Try to think of it as 14 different character classes, rather than just 14 weapons.

If you're in the same lobby you won't be thrown to the far corners of the earth after each hub hunt and stay as a group.

Little tidbit off multiplayer info people may find useful is that on Xbox (no idea about other formats) If you’re in a friends lobby and you are "appearing offline" you cannot join anything, the game just point blank treats you as offline.

Is sunbreak not out yet on gamepass?

If it's anything like World then only the base game will be on Pass. Players had to buy Iceborne separately. TBH, I assumed Sunbreak hadn't even been released on XB/PS at this point, because my wallet just can't deal with that thought ...

According to the Rise wiki page the Sunbreaker expansion is releasing later in the year. It’s just the base game that is on GP. But then it has only just released on Xbox.

I played a bit of the first Monster Hunter and spent the morning trying Rise.

Apart from the impenetrable systems I’m sure will grow on me, the combat only seem to have two moves, big-slash and overhead-bonk.

Am I doing it wrong?
