Hogwarts Legacy - Not as good as Dog Kid University

Just rewatched the trailer.

Some interesting things:

1. When the character is solving amazing puzzles and uncovering secrets, in the audio you can hear him just saying "Accio' all the time. So, press X, basically.

2. The smoothing between the mocap is probably incomplete, but man do those character models 'pop' between poses.

I wasn’t that interested in this game to begin with as my favourite HP media nowadays is basically that which deconstructs/fixes the many, many problems with the material, but I’m taken aback by what I’ve seen of the plot synopsis. Is the plot seriously an uprising in the Wizarding World’s Slave races being manufactured by nefarious actors?

Talk about doubling down JK.

Rome, for starters. Owned people to do all the work. Also had to have sex with the owners. All under threat of expulsion and death as they were property of their owners.

Also, America. Same deal.

Egypt too.

The economy of the world had a large component of the capture and profit-making in enslaving and selling slaves for thousands of years.

Rowling would have to be immensely dim to portray this without making the realisation of it's essential unfairness and evil a proper part of the plot. Instead she lazily went for 'they like it - lol' which was actually an argument put forward by many in Britain, France and America (to name but three) for prolonging slavery - on the basis that their economic circumstances were improving or that they were too stupid to need freedom.

Frankly, I've met Americans who basically still think African Americans are less intelligent because of arguments started in slavery times. Even Jordo Peterson is occasionally at it rabitting on about IQ.

Rowling also seem to be mocking the one character who had a problen with it as a 'do-gooder' which is frankly baffling.

Anyway, videogames.

Looks average.

Yes, I am aware that slavery has been almost endemic in human society since the advent of agriculture.  I've watched all of the TV shows Spartacus and Vikings where slaves are among the main cast. It's the term "house slave" I am questioning. I've never heard it before, and at the risk of sounding facetious it didn't exist in Roman or Egyptian times, or in France.

I'm pretty sure it did in Roman times, but even if it was only used in America then surely it was something to avoid.

The recent politics folder thing seems to have many believing it can't be separated, as it's necessarily interwoven throughout the forum. That said, I do hate megathreads and we're probably discussing JKR elsewhere.

Not really. I've avoided bringing it back up in the Trans thread in OT because honestly there's enough there right now.

Obviously there are other threads on here to discuss JKRs TERFery, but given the way that so many of us react to this game is inextricably bound up in what she's doing, I think it's not right to rule it all out of scope for this thread, that our only role here should be as good, quiet, compliant consumers, so we don't starve the children of QA testers or annoy a fellow consumer who only wants to hear about what cool spells are in the game.

That's how I feel too although I suspect when the game comes out fans are going to get annoyed skipping past the political stuff to talk about the design of the game etc.

I don't know, maybe this part of the discussion could continue in the Tropes thread.

It should just be where people discuss it, be it here, the transgenderism thread, a new thread, etc.

Someone could start a new thread dedicated to just the game itself if they do wished, but no-one has

Yeah, things should get discussed wherever they get discussed. I was less offering an opinion and more stating one of the themes surfaced by others during the politics folder trial (that politics permeates throughout all topics, necessarily).

the amazing ability of people to avoid having that "erm, are we the baddies?" moment will see her through, I'm sure.

I'm already looking forward to seeing the spin sensible TERFs on Twitter put on this.

All of this is very well articulated in Shaun's recent video essay, among other things. It's long, but a fantastic listen:

It doesn't really address Rowling's trans views, as it mostly focusses on what's in the books/movies/play. It does however discuss Rowling's neoliberal world view and how it likely influences her writing.

this one from Contrapoints does talk about her views on trans people, the harm it does, and why her being a victim of abuse doesn’t make what she’s doing now excusable - was a big talking point at the time, the video’s over a year old, JKR’s done much since.

JK’s best tactic right now is to apologise, say she was being ignorant and didn’t understand the depth of discussion around the topic and then lay low for a bit, donate to some lgbtq charities etc.

Instead, she just keeps doubling down.

Not a chance. This is is Glinner school.

I know. It's like asking the Pope to convert from Catholicism, just isn't going to happen. She's already engrained into popular culture the idea that trans people are an active threat to the rights and personal safety of cis women, and someone who does that sort of mass demonisation of a group is never going to back down.

The toilet thing always amuses me as the whole assertion of "they dress like a woman to go into womans loos to assault women" is predicated on the notion that toilets are heavily policed.

They just aren't, if a man wanted to assault a woman in the ladies toilets he could just walk in and do it, noone would really stop him. I was once in a shopping centre I hadn't been to before and got "caught short", I found the ladies but there was no mens (turns out the mens was otherside of the shopping centre) I was desperate so I quickly popped into the Ladies loo full of apologies. Noone screamed or called for the police , no security grabbed me and bundled me into a van. I just went in apologising and left apologising even more and noone got really upset.

You’d have to admire the sheer dedication of a sex pest going through the no doubt traumatic experience of a sex change just to get into a ladies locker room, which is what she seems to think is happening.

So you've lived through metoo, endless revelations of celebrities in the 70s being sex pests, paedophilia scandals in the Catholic Church and others in positions of trust and you conclusion is no one would ever do this?

Any change in the law needs to very carefully consider the potential for bad actors. The UK public is okay with people changing gender (though by no means universal). However, they are generally against self id without medical assessment and a period where you've being living in your chosen gender.

If you want to pick and lose a culture war and damage the rights of the people you claim to care about, trivialising or mocking women raising this issue is the A1 100% route to it.
