Takes a while for that trailer to get going but when it does it’s 🔥🔥🔥

Also is that Chris Finch I hear in the trailer?

“So I get there, she’s Level 19, Regalia chassis, fantastic set of spells and legs up to her arse. Muchos tinctures later I’m in an airship with her. So today I bumped into the mate whose Chocobo I’ve done. Sold him two ton of Highwind. He said to me ‘you look like you’ve been infected with Sleep’. Yeah? And you look like you’ve had Cup Noodles and a wank.”

Yoshida has said that he wants to release a demo but it might end up being available close to the release of the full game.

Even so, I do enjoy Squenix's demos of things like VIIR and the XV "Platinum" trial. :)

So there was a fun bit of controversy over the weekend about this game, with various sites running with an it’s racist story that I’m not 100% sure on. When asked why the cast was entirely white, the director had this to say:

Quote

“Our design concept from the earliest stages of development has always heavily featured medieval Europe, incorporating historical, cultural, political, and anthropological standards that were prevalent at the time. When deciding on a setting that was best suited to the story we wanted to tell—the story of a land beset by the Blight—we felt that rather than create something on a global scale, it was necessary to limit the scope it to a single landmass — one geographically and culturally isolated from the rest of the world in an age without airplanes, television, or telephones.

Due to the underlying geographical, technological, and geopolitical constraints of this setting, Valisthea was never going to realistically be as diverse as say a modern-day Earth...or even Final Fantasy XIV that has an entire planet (and moon) worth of nations, races, and cultures at its disposal. The isolated nature of this realm, however, does end up playing a large part in the story and is one of the reasons Valisthea’s fate is tied to the rest of the world.”

Which I don’t think is the worst response possible. Obviously it’s not great that they’ve chosen an isolated white nation as the setting, but it at least makes some sense and given that he directed the far more diverse XIV I don’t think the director is necessarily someone prone to whitewashing.

However, Kotaku and a few other sites decided to quote this but cut out the “one geographically and culturally isolated from the rest of the world in an age without airplanes, television, or telephones” bit in order to make it sound way worse and far more racist, which is a fun choice.

I’ve had zero interest in this franchise since XII.

Then they mentioned Tactics and XII.

Wait, what? Where?

I'm currently replaying FFXII on the Deck and I'm amazed how good it still is. If anything, it's gotten *better* with age when you play it after XIII and XV. It's just a massive improvement in every single way over everything those games tried to achieve.

That sounds similar to what the devs of Kingdom Come: Deliverance said when they were criticised for being all-white. It was a bad look then, and it is now too.

The timed exclusivity thing's interesting considering how childish Sony are being about the Microsoft / Activision acquisition.

Anyway, the most interesting thing for me about FFXVI is that there's a lead combat designer from Dragon's Dogma involved. I actually haven't been able to get a real read on XVI from any of the trailers, if I'm being honest. Is there anything showing them exploring the world and getting into real battles, or is it still just cinematic flavour trailers so far?

Indeed its all tedious TBH. Hope Sony are paying them a huge chunk of money for this and that its worth it. Hope ultimately this practice stops TBH I expect it will at some point as it will just get too expensive to buy the exclusivity rights vs potentially lost sales in this period.

I expect as time goes on ultimately the hardware will be of less significance and getting the games into as many peoples hands will be the key driver especially as hardware is now becoming standardised.

Anyhow from my point of view it saves me money because I can't buy stuff if its on another format so temptation is removed. And of course the money I might have spent on a title will go elsewhere. Also I probably won't care about the title anyway once the exclusivity period comes to an end and the title will feel "old" at that point.

Just seems weird these days... like having film or music that can only be played on specific bespoke hardware device... :D

Anyway probably for another topic....

To me it was less of an issue with kingdom come, with Final Fantasy, as much as I love the series I am not sure how you can use that argument when the game literally has dragons, monsters and gods / goddesses in it....

Well, quite.

I find it really odd to not only go with a white cast, but then come up with a load of BS to justify it in-universe. Like Kojima defending that character in whatever Metal Gear game with some terrible explanation for him wanting to get some skin showing.

They didn't a previewer did, and it was super spurious (they just said it had multiple kingdoms, like FFXII, or y'know, any of em).

You shouldn't need a nostalgia reference to get excited anyway, the game looks great!

Oh okay. I'd totally be up for a FF game that builds on what XII did :(

Hard disagree on this. It’s their fantasy world, they’ve decided that this nation can’t contact anyone from outside. That’s nowhere near as bad as the developers of Kingdom Come trying to engage in historical revisionism and suggest that in the real

world there were no opportunities for women or people of colour when there’s documented evidence that that isn’t true. Making up your own setting where a bunch of white people are isolated from other nations is dumb, but it’s not as dumb as erasing real people of colour then trying to argue historical accuracy.
