It's definitely had a visual glowup since the first trailer, but it's pretty hard to figure out what's going on onscreen at times there, I still think the turbo flippy combat style clashes with the more grounded medieval aesthetic.

Definitely agree. The contrast in art style and style between combat and the other scenes is incredibly jarring to me. In FFVII Remake and other recent mainline entries the futuristic fonts, energy bars and explosion of numbers on screen worked with their futuristic settings but here it seems quite off.

But combat aside the plot for this sounds really promising, a return to the politics and warring factions of titles like FF6 and FFXII. Love that shiz.

Looks absolutely fantastic. I’m in the minority who absolutely loved XV and I’m always 100% in for a new FF.

Yeah totally. It's a shame XV ran out of XV half way through but that first half was as good an open world experience as I've played outside of the big two.

I bought the XV t-shirt from the Uniqlo FF 35th anniversary collection. Those lads

The game was a mess… but I did love it 😍

I'm not too big on fantasy in general, let alone Final Fantasy but that trailer looked cool to me. I like flashy combat and this having one of the main combat designers of Devil May Cry 5 is promising.

I'm looking forward to buying this at launch and then moaning about how Square haven't made a good mainline FF game since XII, despite not having played XIII, XIV or XV.

Same here. I'm always up for quality campy FF nonsense and everything I've read about the newer campaigns in FFXIV sound brilliant, but I absolutely hate playing MMO or live service games like that. It's a personal preference thing, the unavoidable structure, tone, and immersion breaking aspects of an MMO just turn me off completely. Not even playing solo helps. Trust me I've tried so many times. I hope some of the brilliance of XIV will be apparent in XVI for me to enjoy in a proper single player experience type deal :)

Not into online RPGs alas, as I've heard so many good things about it.

Me neither. I’ve put 400 hours into XIV 🙃

EDIT: I could easily believe that players who are into online RPG’s rack up thousands of hours.

Doesn't fill me with the joy it should. I binned it off as I thought the control scheme was atrociously fiddly and muddled.. the jump and dodge being mapped to the same button being probably one of the most frustrating things I've dealt with in a while.

Damiani on the Easy Allies podcast pointed out that the same guy also directed the combat for Dragon’s Dogma. I haven’t played that, but I know people love the shite out of that game. I think FFXVI is in very safe hands.

Final Fantasy 16 doesn't have any American English voice acting because Square Enix was worried it might offend... Americans.

This is according to Naoki "Yoshi-P" Yoshida, who touched on this aspect of Final Fantasy 16 in a recent interview with Dengeki Online (translated by @aitaikimochi). Yoshida explained that the English version of the game will be voiced solely by actors using British English, as the developers worried that American English-speaking characters would upset American players hoping for an authentic representation of medieval Europe.

"Even though the script is written in English, we made sure to not include any American accents," Yoshida said. "We decided to do this to prevent Americans from playing the game and getting mad and saying something like, 'I was looking forward to playing a game set in a fantasy Medieval Europe, but why are they speaking American English!?' (laughs). To prevent this, we made sure that all the dialogue was recorded using British English.

Description of a new trailer from IGN, since removed:

Quote

A new Final Fantasy XVI trailer has arrived, shedding more light on a world that in some ways resembles an even more fantastic version of Ivalice — the realm popularized by Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy XII.

As revealed in the new trailer, the land of Valisthea is evidently dying as its crystals slowly fade. A voiceover intones, “Darkness spreads as day gives way to twilight, the mother’s flame now all but a flicker. We cannot live without the blessing of the crystals.”

Crystals are a famous part of Final Fantasy's lore going back to the original game. While they haven't been in every single Final Fantasy game, they're generally included as a more nostalgic element in the series. Their inclusion in Final Fantasy XVI suggests that Square Enix is intent on honing in on iconic imagery from the franchise despite differences like the action-oriented combat.

The trailer goes on to highlight the various kingdoms, each with its own theme: The Grand Duchy of Rosaria, “a bastion of tradition”; the Holy Empire of Sanbreque, “where ambition is divine”; the Dhalmekian Republic, “where fortune shifts with the desert sands”; The Iron Kingdom, “forged in faith and fear”; and the Kingdom of Waloed, “indomitable in its isolation.”

As previously revealed by Square Enix, each kingdom has its own summon, or “Eikon.” Rosaria’s Eikon is Phoenix, while the Eikons of several of the other kingdoms have yet to be revealed. The trailer hints at a major war between the various kingdoms as they battle to “claim the fading light” of the crystals.

Both Clive and Joshua make appearances in the trailer, with Joshua once again shown summoning Phoenix, and Clive exploring something called “the Deadlands” with several other party members As in the previous trailer, Eikons play a major role. Aside from Ifrit, a mysterious tapestry featuring a multitude of summons is glimpsed at the end of the trailer, which ought to give knowledgeable Final Fantasy fans an idea of what to expect going forward.
