My guess would be Q3 2024 release so no way is this registering on the hypometer yet.

Given that it’s the first FF game I’ve ever seen announced with anything other than a jpeg of the logo or CGI teaser I’m guessing it’s closer than that.

But it looks so rough. For a moment I thought it was a FFXIV expansion or something, because it looks like that same engine to me. I still need to watch a proper HD video though, but even regardless of the stream quality those environments were hella barren. And the editing of these FF trailers is usually very slick, but this one was a shambles. Amateurish even. Like it was quickly whipped together. I hope for everyone that it's closer than expected, but I wonder.

Someone pointed out that it says "Playstation consoles" rather than PS5, so it could be cross-gen and coming sometime next year, which would explain the graphics being current-gen+

Looks pretty bland in the character department to me (again). Final Fantasy used to have interesting and weird races, characters with odd proportions/tails and actual colour. Now every installment looks like battle of the impossibly pretty humans with melodrama.

That would explain it but as far as I can tell it also looks worse than XV?  I don't know, I'm definitely keeping my eye ob this because it's FF but I'm also genuinely surprised that it managed to generate so much general excitement. Usually gamers are up in arms about things like an otherwise extremely gorgeous game having fewer puddles than in the announcement trailer, but FF gets a pass. Not that there's anything wrong with positivity, that's definitely better than puddle gate shenanigans.

It could be worse..... It could be FFXIII.....  I have to say I really enjoyed FFXV for the most part it has some things I didn't like, but overall an enjoyable experience (my own opinion of course) I really like the art direction for this trailer and seeing how summons appear to be a huge part of this story I am excited to see it in full.

It looks fine and all, but I'm already missing FFXV's inventive take on melding modern conventions and fantasy elements.

God, I loved XV.

XVs master stroke is it's mix of over the top modern FF tech-fantasy with the completely mundane and banal. Pushing your car to the nearest gas station because you forgot to fill it up, and then night falls, and you fight some massive demon, and then you manage to push your car the rest of the way and the lads are sitting looking at their mobile phones on shitty plastic lawn furniture before turning in for the night in a static caravan.

It reminded me a lot of Shenmue 1, especially the day and night cycle and turning in for the night - going back up the hill every evening in Shenmue is probably my strongest memory of that game. But FF-XV lacked the surface level of interaction (looking in drawers, capsule toys etc.) that sold the reality of Shenmue.

For sure. The thing is, you can have all sorts of crazy shit going on in a game like that if there's something relatable to draw your attention away from the crazier elements. Caravans with cheap white plastic seats outside them, petrol stations, roadside diners and all that. It's easy to ignore the hulking flying airships dropping off zombie soldiers if there's a little radio shack with a pair of tourist binoculars right beside it.

I wish I could replay FFXV on PC as I really fancy going through it again, but without an SSD the load times and in-game streaming are pretty bad - and the loading wasn't great on PS4 in the first place.

Really happy to finally see a return to the old setting. I haven’t been as hyped for FF like this since... IX?

Graphics are rough (but not ugly), but I wouldn’t be surprised if this was developed in a sort of basic mode to make it work on old and new hardware, with polish coming in now that specs are set in stone for PS5.

As for the exclusivity, it looks like it was up for time exclusivity originally, yet when the stream happened this may have been changed into PS5/PC exclusivity. At this point either Square Enix or Sony should come out and just say which video has the correct info.

And I had honestly forgotten I still had the FF feels right until the moment that soundtrack kicked in.

It does, but FF has always been the "popular in America" series with Dragon Quest being more popular in Japan, and has always mined western sources of influence, with FF8's Private Ryan beach landing and Lost World dinosaur zoo being the most obvious.

I played through FFXIII a few years ago and it's super obvious that LOST was a big thing when it started development because they basically nicked the flashback-heavy plot structure of an episode in every chapter, for a more recent example.
