Loving this and the puzzles are great. I’ve got Phosphur but he does nothing at the moment in the menu, have I missed a quest to make him useful?

You need to unlock his (all very useful) abilities in the God Skills and finish his whole quest line (if you haven’t already). You can do the whole thing at a very low level, even though it takes you into some of the harder regions. Basically just head in a straight line for the quest markers and run like hell.

I’ll tell you what I also don’t like, and this is far from the only game that does it, the bait and steal tactic where you fight your way through a level or vault or whatever to claim the prize/key/MacGuffin and it get nicked off you at the very last moment. Luigi’s Mansion 3 did this with elevator keys and it’s highly annoying. There has to be better ways to lengthen the storyline than being robbed at the last second.

Spoiler, If things have been nicked.

Spoiler

It’s a once off thing, thematically appropriate as a dick move. I’m not sure it’s lengthening the storyline (think about how many quests for that character have happened at that point).

As for the game it's charming as shit, isn't it? It's a bit try-hard in the humour and narrative but it looks lovely and there's loads to do and the combat is decent. I have the feeling I'm going to suffer the same burnout I do from almost every Ubisoft game but we'll see. I'm a sucker for mythology so that might keep me going.

This really is the perfect Xmas holiday game. Just drop in, drop out; pick it up and play and within a minute or two you're right back into whatever type of action you fancy - puzzle, brawl, dungeon, challenge etc.

I had absolutely no interest in this at all and actually only became aware of it because of the feedback in here. Then got bought it for Xmas and it's umami gaming.

Yeah I thought it was odd that you get sent directly to the essence straight away on that one so when it happened it made sense.

I can see myself mainlining it more as I get through it as once I’m past 30 hours on games like this I just get really freaked out that it’s taking me so damn long even if I’m enjoying it! Good to have the choice though.

(I’m 25 hours in and half way through the 2nd main area)

So, having put about 50hrs into ACVal and finding it to be the best in the series since AC2, (plus ya know, BOTW comparisons) I decided to pick this up and give it a go. Wish I hadn't!

Having put a few hrs into it, I can safely say, it's absolute shite. Well that's not entirely true, the graphics are nice and colourful, but that's about it.

The game world is simply dreadful. Its everything that is wrong with open world games and with games being dumbed down for the lowest common denominator. Its like someone just shat out any old crap, and called it a gameworld. It's that bad it feels randomly generated! Even worse are the endless, mindless tasks that are pissed all over the place. There are something like 10 similar tasks just repeated 100s and 100s, if not 1000s of times across the "world".

If you're thinking about picking this up, then i hope you enjoy putting 3 boxes onto 3 pressure pads to access a chest. Or 3 rocks onto 3 pressure pads to access a chest. Or rolling 3 balls onto 3 pressure pads to access a chest. Or lighting 3 torches to access a chest. Or finding 3 switches to access a chest. Or hitting 3 targets to access a chest. Or finding 3 orbs to access a chest etc etc. And what do the chests give you when you open them? Random loot. In ither words, a load of shit. Awesome!

Now factor in, there's that much crap spewed across the map, that those "tasks" are all just literally seconds away from one another!!! You can't move for them, again, literally! Top stuff......especially for a generic "my first adventure game" from 1997!

Oh, did i mention that one of the tasks is a simplistic 4 piece sliding puzzle that a 3yr old could solve, that's repeated over and over, in order to access......that's right - another chest?  Did I mention the fights that are the exact same fights you've had 100s of times before, with the exact same enemies, in order to access another chest? Did I mention you can climb up high and spend minutes just scanning 1000s of chests and all the absolute tat into your game, so you can just go straight to the 1000s of icons, that are now littering your overloaded map and HUD, to repeat those same 10 mind numbing tasks over and over and over again! Its sooooo much fun!!!

Maybe, just maybe, the story is absolutely incredible and redeems the rest of the game though? That said, going on the CBeebies style voiceover, that at times makes no sense at all and leaves you feeling like something is missing in translation then, I highly doubt it!

Forget the comparisons to BOTW. Instead imagine a parallel dimension. One where Ocarina Of Time never happened but Starfox Adventures still did! Now imagine Starfox Adventures was praised as the greatest game ever made. Ubisoft came along and needed to break even with their latest Assassin's Creed, so shat out a game using similar mechanics to maximise cashflow and basically Ubisofted the fuck out of the 10/10 critically acclaimed masterpiece that was Starfox Adventures. Sound good? Get putting those boxes on those pressure plates. You're in for a real treat!

Crikey. This game that loads of people are loving really made you angry.

That’s fair enough of course except your whole post is so full of anger and vitriol and is fairly condescending in saying that those who are enjoying it must like the ‘my first videogame’ vibe.

However let’s be serious for a sec.

Forgetting the story, because clearly the Greek myth storytelling in this doesn’t do it for you, what is it that Valhalla does that impresses you so much more? Because from what I’ve played of that, which is just a few hours, it seems very dreary (though beautiful) with basic combat and fairly standard AC style tasks. Go here, kill this village, get that thing etc. With not a puzzle in sight.

For the record I would say this is definitely aimed at a younger demographic and is clearly built to be more accessible to somebody looking for a more cheery atmosphere. Which is partly why I like it! I really wonder what creators must think when they see reactions like ‘you’ve clearly shit out this game’ when it seems clear to me that a lot of love and care has gone into it. The problem is that it’s not for you?

You don’t have to scan all the items. If you want you can just play if like BOTW and find everything yourself whilst out exploring. I’m not trying to convince you to play it, I just think it’s important to get the right info out there.

Also saying ‘if you understood why would you do it’ implies that they wanted to make it identical. It is similar in mechanics in many ways (humorously so at times) but they’ve still made their own game with their own ‘Ubisoft’ additions and I don’t see the problem with adding in an alternative way of playing that will no doubt suit a lot of their customers.

I’m wondering if some people are struggling with it because it lacks story driven secondary quests so the narrative for the puzzle tasks isn’t there. The tasks, solve this, kill this, fetch this etc are similar to many other open world games with the addition of many nice ‘setting relevant’ puzzles only they’re just sitting there without any real explanation. Without the dressing up. Just thinking out loud really.

@Nobuo's OrganLol!

To be honest, the scanning thing is the least of its problems. The actual core of the game - it's world and what there is to do within it, are the main problems. There's no decent narrative and sense of purpose driving you forwards. There's no exploration. There's no sense of place. There's no sense of adventure. There's no intelligent design to any of it. There's no thought to any of it.  Its just mindless. Very poorly designed, thoroughly average and incredibly generic. Its Ubisoft at their worst. Which is ironic as all the stuff I've read about this claim it's Ubisoft innovating!

Maybe if innovating is........throwing endless amounts of shit to collect onto a seemingly randomly generated map. Dumb it all down and fill the world with higly repetitive tasks. Whack some mechanics in from other games that have sold well, without really understanding them. Checklist the fuck out of shit! Its horribly manufactured by numbers. Its soulless. Basically stuff like this is the X Factor of gaming.

@YiggyI'm not angry. That might be how my post comes across to you though, no worries. I'm just getting across my point of view that this game, despite what numerous reviews have said, is Ubisoft at their worst. I think it's incredibly poor in many areas to the point it's one of the worst games I've played in years. It really is mindless.

As an example of how bad it is......I've never fast travelled in any game ever. I love exploring game worlds. This had me wanting to fast travel within a couple of hrs of playing, as the world is incredibly generic, repetitive and has nothing of interest to see or find within it. I'd wager its very repetitive, even for a young kid.

Some stuff I enjoyed with Assassin's Creed Valhalla - the game world itself and it's sense of place. It feels natural and parts of it are memorable.

You can play with the HUD totally switched off, which makes the world itself and exploration more fun and engaging.

Multi layered quests/tasks.

The treasure hunt "riddles" that you need to solve in order to find items.

The combat/stealth mechanics.

The pacing works well. Side quests (which are all substantially different), collecting gear, following the main plot etc.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla is just a better game than this imo. It has better design and treats the player with intelligence. Yeah, there's lots of collectathon stuff in it too. But Immortals takes that to ridiculous levels and the repetition of it all and the lack of any real wonder, magic, exploration and adventure just means Immortals ends up feeling like a highly manufactured and dumbed down cash grab to me.

In fact, whoever the people are that are responsible for this mess, need to go and study Shadow of the Colossus. A game that has an amazing World and an incredible sense of scale and place. A simple story, told with artistry and feeling. A game that treats the player with intelligence. Here's your horse, here's your bow and arrows, here's your sword which will also double as a hint system, now go explore for those monsters! No 1000s of icons and insane amounts of chests with pointless bullshit to collect. No mindless and highly repetitive tasks. No crate shifting "puzzles" like its still 1997 (fuck me its almost 2021 and......crate puzzles are still being rolled out like they're cutting edge)!

Games should be moving forwards and doing so much more than this nonsense. At times, its felt almost felt like playing a mobile phone game on my PS5! Whoever mentioned Gameloft was spot on!

Complaining that this isn't as good as BotW is like buying a knock off LEGO Xwing from Ali Express and then being surprised that it's not as good as the real thing.  Whatever its obvious inspiration it's still a Ubisoft Collectathon(TM), warts and all. I went for it over AC: Valhalla and Watch Dogs Legion because I fancied it's chunky, colourful, mythical take on that flogged to death formula.

The far sight thing baffled me too at first, because fuck me it sounds like a chore. I don't want to be scanning the landscape for ten minutes trying to find everything to then try and go and collect everything, but then I sacked it off because you find shit as you're gadding about anyway.

I really like putting boxes on pressure pads to access a chest.

They’re mostly quite simple but after years of AC style “travel here and speak to this person to access a fight,” it feels like a breath of fresh air, and the puzzles get better the further in you get.

As someone said earlier, it’s a great pick up and play holiday game. I’ve been sinking an hour or so into it daily and it’s perfect in that time to complete a puzzle or a dungeon with just enough light challenge and there’s often a distraction to do something else as like botw, there’s a nice organic flow in the game world to distract you do get or do something else.

I think what I love about this game is that it feels like a world I want to explore. I think anyone who says the world feels randomly generated hasn’t seen most of it, as a lot of it has been designed, and even designed with certain puzzles in mind. Sadly, the better puzzles are fewer and further between, but I see this as a budgetary constraint more than anything else. I also can’t really get annoyed with them, when they’re pure classic gaming mechanics, rather than just triggering the next bit of the story by talking to someone, AC style.

The other day, I spent an hour or so exploring a set of islands off the main one, and I did find myself wondering about the world and what the stuff was. I also found a great puzzle mechanic that I’ve not seen anywhere else in the game.

And the thing is, the puzzles are all optional. If you feel that any of the varieties are below your mega-brain intellect, you can just never touch those ones. Or any of them, really.

I’ve played better games this year that didn’t come out in 2020, but purely in terms of games which came out in 2020, it’s looking like this might beat out Miles Morales for me.

  1. There’s no randomly generated loot. There’s a reasonable amount of visual customisation for your character, who you spend a lot of time looking at, but nothing is randomly generated.
  2. The various tasks/puzzles are repeated, but they’re always repeated with variations. I’m bemused how anyone can play the game longer than the first area and state that they’re always the same: and besides, they’re all optional. It would be a shit game for completionists, but then so is BoTW.
  3. spending your time scanning everything is tedious. It’s your choice to make it that tedious, or to then follow through on your scanning of everything.
  4. Four piece sliding block puzzles are tedious, fortunately you aren’t forced to do them, and later ones add some more interesting complexity (still not a lot of complexity, but differences all the same)

my gut feel is that you’ve not played any of the god vaults, let alone all of them. Would I be right?

I finished this yesterday. Overall I thought it was fine but a bit like digital chewing gum - great if you need something for your fingers to do for the next 40 hours, but not much nutritional value.

Liked most of the God vaults, apart from the Athena one which drove me crackers. Spent most of my time doing all the puzzles and vaults and getting swole, then ploughed through all the story without any difficulty. Getting the shadow double God power early on was a really good choice as it made a lot of the puzzles much easier, and you could even brute force some of them without having to find the ‘proper’ solution.

It was nice enough, but I doubt I’ll ever look at it again.

I have no idea! Everything I’ve played so far, just blurs together into one big bland mush.

Just to be clear, I’m not saying the game IS randomly generated. I’m saying that the game world and it’s “puzzles” are that poor, it all FEELS randomly generated.

Here’s an example of the “gameplay” I’ve experienced and why I think it’s a poor game, with poor design......

I have to travel to a location that is miles away. Getting there is a chore. The world looks nice but its not immersive or atmospheric or interesting. There’s no sense of place to it. There’s no interesting traversal whilst crossing it. It’s the exact opposite of a game like Zelda. Literally, every few seconds, no matter which direction I turn, there’s another simple identikit crate “puzzle” (or torch “puzzle”, sliding pic “puzzle”, rock “puzzle”, it doesn’t matter they’re all basically the same). Or there’s another piece of tat to collect, sat alongside another thingy-ma-Bob to collect......and another wazoo to collect......sat alongside another challenge fight.......alongside another vault containing crates and pressure pad “puzzles”........sat alongside more enemies surrounding a chest, alongside another.........etc etc. There’s no room for anything to breath.

There’s no care or thought to any of it either. There’s just a totally ludicrous amount of crap, scattered willy-nilly all over the map. None of it makes any sense in relation to the game world, as to why its there. And because there is so much crap scattered everywhere, there’s no exploration, as stuff is literally forced on you every few feet. The game treats the player as though they have the attention span of a goldfish (or have been lobotomised) and need constant loot boxes to open, in order to keep their interest and keep them playing. “Look how clever you are! You’ve picked up 3 crates, that were directly at the side of the 3 pressure pads, and put the 3 crates onto the pressure pads........AGAIN! Have a another chest! You’re a winner”!

So anyway, I’m on my way to the location and suddenly I hear........”how dare you challenge me”! A monster literally appears out of thin air battling some soldiers. I ignore it and carry on. A minute further down the path I hear......”how dare you challenge me”! The same monster appears literally out of thin air, battling the same soldiers again. I ignore it and move forwards. A minute further on I hear.......”how dare you challenge me”! Again, the same monster literally appears out of thin air battling the same soldiers. These are challenge battles or something. They feel like someone plonked them into the map over and over in a rush, just before they knocked off early for the day!

And when I finally arrive at the destination I’ve been travelling to, after passing 100’s of identikit chest “puzzles” and pointless wazzoos that are littering the environment, just like the 1000s of icons that are littering my world map........I discover that the same monster, from the identikit challenge battles I’ve passed three times in a matter of minutes, is also my next goal and is waiting for me to battle, in a non optional identikit battle! Sorry, but this game is poorly, checklist manufactured shite. It feels very “Poundland” video game. Yeah, you might get some pretty mindless throwaway fun out of it but, at the end of the day, it’s still poorly, checklist manufactured shite.

And another thing.......putting the attack controls on the shoulder buttons might have worked in Dark Souls with its patient, precise, slow paced, two handed combat. Putting attack controls on the shoulder buttons, in a fast paced button masher, is really not a good idea, it just ends up with the player getting severe RSI after about 5 mins. Lol. Perfect example of how Ubisoft copy shit for the sake of it, without having a clue why or how the original shit they’re copying, worked so well in the first place!

I really like it, such a gorgeous world to potter about in.  Traversal is really fun, especially after upgrading your climbing and gliding skills.  The puzzles are about my level (I’m not very smart), and the combat is engaging.  I’m very early game (11 hours) but having a whale of a time!

Interesting discussion but I do wonder how long you’ve put into the game? It sounds like the puzzles you come across are all the dead simple beginning variety. Holding my hands up here - I’ve only finished the prologue so have nothing really to contribute for or against.

One thing I can say is that the commentary on the controls is pretty much hogwash; the default control scheme for the Creed games also have attacks on the shoulder buttons...

And any comparisons to Gameloft are quite amusing, because that company was founded by Guillemot.

Just for balance, all of the things that @CrichStand thinks are objective truths do not resemble the game much for me at all.

A lot of it sounds like they've watched someone else play it -the combat mechanics are nothing like they describe. The "constant" use of "quotation" "marks" shouldn't turn you off the "puzzles". There's plenty of clever stuff in the game that they don't seem to have played.

Either way, clearly they've invested a lot in disliking the game, but I wouldn't let those lengthy posts put off any prospective players. It's not for them, but I'd say they're in the minority at this point.
