The stamina gauge can fuck right off. Especially when it depletes during gliding.

Having to climb with the left stick whilst holding down the right button on the control pad to eat mushrooms which only fill a minuscule amount of your stamina gauge is the sort of mechanic that I can’t believe got through play testing. Like it was just there as a placeholder and they forgot to add the proper one in and shipped the game anyway.

Do you know about the potions? Because I haven’t eaten a mushroom in like 20 hours. It’s meant to be an absolute last resort.

You need to make potions with the mushrooms. Doing so then gives one press on the right d-pad to refill a chunk of your bars. If you do an upgrade on the stamina potions it refills more bars each time. Single mushroom eating is for emergencies only.

You can’t do that initially, unfortunately. Either way, to make a potion you have to find a BotW cooking pot cauldron and that’s more faff.

You get to fast travel back to the hall of gods which has a cauldron and you get there pretty quickly. It’s standard introduction stuff. You probably don’t need to be doing too much climbing that early! To be fair, BOTW did exactly the same thing.

I’ve gotten my first major annoyance in the 2nd main area (God one). Just the multiple big creatures attacking when I’m not quite as tough as I was in that first area. I think I just need to spend some time upping a few stats again and I’m sure it will stay pretty balanced. I’ve done a few nice shrines vaults using the bow, especially the self guided arrow stuff.

You first reach a cauldron within a couple of hours play, once you reach the first main area - if you are trying to climb the cliffs in the opening area then don't - the monsters  up there will massacre you at that stage of the game.

You can fast travel to the Hall of the Gods at any point so its no real hassle.

Anyway I properly adore this game, its got masses of charm and I love the saturday morning cartoon humour complete with plenty of layered meaning.  Its a really fun take on Greek mythology.

I think the design is great and there's enough variety in the different world activities along with a constant stream of goodies to power yourself up to make you want to clear them all.  Combat is really kinetic fun once you get some of the Godly powers and ability upgrades.

I've rinsed the first main area now and also gone back to the starting island to clear the bits that were beyond my abilities early in the game and now tackling Athena's are.

I'm 30 hours in and barely cleared a quarter of the game it appears.  Pretty certain this is going to be my game of the year.

Yeah. You can just keep moving though, and the wraith is very unlikely to catch you. The fights in the lairs aren’t bad.

Hephaestus’ Vault has some great puzzles in it. Really odd that the mechanic they’re all based on doesn’t seem to show up anywhere else.

But in between his Forge and his Vault, the setting and puzzles are Zelda tier. I’d love to see them try a sequel - cut some of the fat off, improve the writing and invest a bit more in world building and the more inventive puzzles, and it’d be a stone cold classic.

I liked Athena’s vault for the same reason: mechanics introduced then iterated on.

done Hephaestus now, so just one god to go. It may riff on Zelda (but perhaps more games should do, and perhaps BoTW borrowed more Ubisoft tropes than was generally acknowledged) but it is riffing well: the vaults are varied enough, if you don’t mainline every single one (no guarantees if you do - I’m deliberately not simply because I’ve burnt out on this kind of thing before), the in world puzzles and navigation challenges are hardly The Witness^, but do make reasonable use of their environments; the set piece dungeons and lead up to them generally focus on one and done mechanics, and are all the better for it.

feels like the kind of game that would really have benefited from a March release, when everyone isn’t trying to play the other big games.

^ but what is?

Not really, your character drifts downwards anyway. That the stamina gauge is tied into something that isn't remotely infinite, is what annoyed me.

That said, I've now plunged hours into this game and niggles aside, I'm adoring it. It looks fucking gorgeous on the PS5.

I’m very sorry, I’d thought that my comments would make it clear that I have played the game and know all this and you don’t need to tell me. It seems that I let you down in this respect.

Anyway, there’s plenty of places to climb in the opening area other than said cliffs (but you know this already) and having to fast travel back somewhere just to do a potion cutscene is just rather dull (you also know this but may be in denial).

Just make the mushrooms last longer, that’s all I ask Ubisoft!

Beat the second main area earlier and still really enjoying the game. Got to the point where I’ve levelled up stamina and health quite a bit so it’s not too challenging combat wise, but that’s good. More focus on exploring and solving the puzzles which are fab.

Says a lot that when I flip the PC on I’m tending towards this rather than Cyberpunk at the moment, despite the fact CP is probably the better game. It’s just much easier to dip in to for an hour.

This is a better game than CP. it doesn’t feature things that are patently broken for a start, and in places is as beautiful (kings peak has some wow moments).

@StrafeIt becomes clear that you’re not meant to complete the starting area first off. It’s perhaps possible if you eat a lot of mushrooms, but there are some islands I doubt you can reach even then.

I am kinda pissed off at how buggy certain aspects have been. Sometimes I'd attempt a puzzle twice in the same way and it'd fail the first time, then work the second - for instance, an air current might not allow me to glide across a gap first attempt, then the same thing shortly after will see me soaring across.

A chimney failed to load in during the Hephaestus' forge quest, so I spent about 30 minutes looking around, traveling away, traveling back, looking for nearby puzzles that might be related to making it appear... finally looked it up online and it turns out that some people have had to reload to make it appear like it's supposed to. One reload later, boom, there it is.

Worst of all though is that one of the legendary heroes didn't give me his crest after I beat him about fifteen hours ago. This means I can't unlock a certain thing to get a certain super best-in-class thing, and I'm seriously hacked off with my desire to finish the game subsequently tumbling off a cliff.

It doesn't look like an outwardly buggy game (it actually looks super polished), but there's been a fair amount of questionable shit like the above happening for me throughout and seemingly for others as well - a quick search had the same crest issue happen for someone else, only for a different hero, so it's not just me.

Shame, because it's a pretty good game when it isn't repeatedly breaking in various ways.

On PC I’ve not noticed any bugs, though there has been the occasional annoying jump in the final vault (to the extent that I ended up on YouTube to check that what I thought was the jump was the jump but...).

anyway finished, all major optional quests (at least that I discovered or was handed) done: large number of vaults left undone.

good game. Last act a tad too long.

The one issue I had was in Hephaestus’ Vault, the wind sometimes wouldn’t carry me at all. Quite annoying.

I’ve only got Athena’s quest line to do now, but spent the evening mucking around in Hephaestus’ realm. There are some cracking bits there.

I’ve also been using the grapple to pull enemies into lasers and what not. The game doesn’t really feel like it’s made to do this, sadly, but it does work, and expanding these systems would be great.

I’d love to know what the relative budget for this vs an Assassin’s Creed game is. It feels like it’s got a much smaller budget, but it remains polished, the world is enormous and feels designed rather than just being generated from an asset pool, and the time that went into designing some of these puzzles must have been significant.

I'm a bit overwhelmed by this.

I've climbed 3 of the statues. Done Athenas Hydra quest and have been in a few "dungeons".

I'm desparately trying not to do the main story quests but I don't seem to be able to find any other side quests.

Whats the best way to play this?

I'm kind of going all over the map stumbling onto things rather than doing it in a certain order.

Like I said it's a bit overwhelming

The best way to play it is to play the main story quests. Sorry. There’s enough of them and they’re varied enough to avoid getting bored.

Clean up chests and puzzles as you fly over them. then perhaps clean up the additional quests before you get the very clear and obvious (you’re told in the quest description, narration and a full on “do you want to continue, yes/no” prompt) end point.

I avoided opening up any of the other areas until I’d done most of Aphrodite’s. Took ages to do her quest line, too. I was just pottering about exploring the place.

After that, I did Ares’ and Hephaestus’ quests but have since just been pottering around their areas doing different bits. It really depends what you like most. I like exploring the map, but often get waylaid by interesting looking puzzles or head off into a vault in the hopes of some platforming or more elaborate puzzle.

Populating fast travel points with enemies: dick move.

Also highly irritating: Ubisoft’s insistence that other people’s often rubbish and often spoiler filled photos fill up your map, many of which sit right over the icon you’re trying to highlight instead.

Open the map, press Y for Legend then scroll to the bottom and untick Photos.

I’ll tell you what I also don’t like, and this is far from the only game that does it, the bait and steal tactic where you fight your way through a level or vault or whatever to claim the prize/key/MacGuffin and it get nicked off you at the very last moment. Luigi’s Mansion 3 did this with elevator keys and it’s highly annoying. There has to be better ways to lengthen the storyline than being robbed at the last second.

Two ways to play it really

1) Mainline the story missions and sample the side content as you encounter it (in every section where a story quest takes place there will be at least 2 or 3 side activities - mini dungeons, chests with a little environmental puzzle, mythic quests where you do a block shift puzzle or shoot a slow motion arrow through some hoops etc.

Or

2) Climb to a number of high points across the area and do the far sight thing to mark activities on your map.  Swoop around the area mopping them up, partly in line with where ever the story quest is taking you in an area.

I'm taking the latter route and have spent over 30 hours rinsing the Aphrodite section and the the starting island area which has taken me just north of 30 hours so far.  So time consuming but I'm finding there is enough variety and all the side stuff is quite engaging to keep me hooked.  Also you need to do the side stuff to get the various currencies to power up - there is no XP in the game.
