Xbox Series X | S

I've been thinking about upgrading to a Series X but it's frustrating that almost every machine comes bundled with Forza Horizon 5. I hate Forza fucking Horizon and don't want it bundled in with the machine.
I might be able to find a non-bundle system only but then I'd have to pay full price for a game. I'd rather get something beundled with a bit of discount.
I guess there'll probably be a Starfield bundle come September? Maybe I'll just wait for that.

You can get one 'like new' from Amazon Warehouse for £432:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Xbox-RRT-00007-Series-X/dp/B08H93GKNJ/ref=sr_1_4?crid=2CKLJ362A587Z&keywords=series+x&qid=1679999896&sprefix=series+x%2Caps%2C83&sr=8-4

Might help with the cost of another game you're wanting?

Thanks. It's tempting but I kind of resent the idea of paying over £400 for a second hand system.

How about if it were a refurbished one (with full warranty) from MS? They’re on their site for £419. They’ve also got standalone (ie no game) ones for £449.

If either of those appeal to you then you can also buy cheap MS store credit from the likes of Gamivo / Eneba and that’d typically (gift card availability permitting)  get your cost on one of the ones I’ve listed down to about £360 / £390 :)

Oh, that sounds good.

I didn't realise you could use store credit to buy physical consoles, I thought it was just for digital stuff.

I've never heard of either of those sites though.

Yes it deffo works as both myself and a friend loaded the codes onto our MS accounts so we could pounce on a Series X (when they were in short supply) as soon as they became available.

As for the sites I’ve used them both plenty of times and they’ve been fine. CDkeys is another one that you might want to take a look at.

Cheaper expansion cards spotted:

A new Western Digital Xbox expandable storage card has been spotted at Best Buy, and it’s cheaper than the current Seagate option.

An additional manufacturer for Xbox expandable storage is much-needed and will hopefully help push prices in the right direction. Best Buy’s listing (which has now been removed) of the Western Digital C50 1TB expansion card is $40 less than the Seagate model. At $179.99 it’s still hugely overpriced for 1TB storage, especially when you can find a Samsung 980 Pro 1TB PCIe Gen4 drive for $79.99 right now.

Microsoft decided to go with proprietary storage for its Xbox Series X / S consoles, which makes the installation a lot more consumer friendly. But pricing has suffered with only a single manufacturer. Sony opted for a rather standard M.2 SSD expandable storage slot instead, which allows PS5 owners to use a variety of drives on the market. You can even use slow PCIe Gen4 drives on the PS5.

It’s not clear when Western Digital’s new 1TB expansion card for Xbox will be available. The Best Buy listing has no preorder dates, so we’ve reached out to both Western Digital and Microsoft to comment on the listing.

Update, April 2nd 6:30PM ET: Best Buy has now removed the listing.

Can you not just use a USB external drive? What's the advantage of the expansion cards?

Normal drives aren’t fast enough to run Series games from. They can be used as storage though.

I’d not be completely surprised if this was a fiction with software rather than hardware limitation.

Just to add to that, you can’t run series games from them but you can run back compat (one and 360) games from a standard external drive.

You can set it to automatically install BC games to your plug in HDD, saving space on the internal SDD for Series stuff.

You can also store Series Game files on a HDD and move them across to the SDD when you want to play them (saving download/install times).

Well I took the plunge and bought a Series X today.

I didn't really want the Forza pack bu tthen it was on offer at The Game Collection and, after checking out some reviews, they convinced me that the game is worth a pop for what works out at about £15.

I'm really looking forward to my shiny new console arriving, though I doubt I'll see it before the bank holilday.

Is it possible to do this with a drive that already has other stuff on it?

Very nice. I got mine last year as I wanted to go back to Xbox this Gen. Gamepass was a big factor!

I think the drive may have to be formatted for use on Xbox to start with (mine is an old Seagate I bought for the Xbox One years ago) but otherwise its simple to setup to install BC games direct. I think you do it in My Games and Apps under Stoarge options.

Ah I didn't do that, guess that's why it's not letting me do install Xbox games. But after formatting, can you add media files and emulator stuff to it? Or does formatting it make it only suitable for Xbox games? I'd try it out but I have like 3TB of data on the drive .
