I was slightly annoyed when I found out that it's not actually 1TB but 919GB, though! Where did the other 81GB go?!

well, that's a 1000 vs 1024 issue...or Decimal vs Binary...

Why Does My 1TB Hard Drive Offer only 931GB of Space?

by PLATTERSWAPPER

The good news is that there is nothing wrong with either your hard drive or your computer. This apparently reduced size is both normal and will apply regardless of which brand of hard drive you buy, which computer you install it in and which operating system you use. The reason is fairly straight forward (if rather odd). When advertising their hard drives, manufacturers use a different method of defining how much storage space is on the drive to the actual method used by your computer when it uses that space.

The SI (International System of Units) standard definition of a Terabyte is 1012 and so (not unreasonably) you would expect a 1TB drive to hold: 1,000,000,000,000 bytes (1012). This would apply perfectly well if computers worked with powers of 10 (as we do ourselves). The problem is that computers work with powers of 2 and so as far as they are concerned 1KB is 1024 bytes, not 1000. Computers use binary approximations of the decimal values, and so when your computer stores a 1KB document it occupies 1024 bytes of space on the drive. 1MB = 10242 = 1,048,576 bytes (compared with 1,000,000 bytes of “advertised” space on the hard drive label). 1GB = 10243 = 1,073,741,824 bytes (compared with 1,000,000,000).

1TB =  10244 = 1,099,511,628,000 bytes (compared with 1,000,000,000,000)

It can be seen therefore that when taking up 1MB of storage space, your computer will use in excess of the SI defined value of 1MB. In other words the computer sees the drive as being smaller than the label on the hard drive claims it to be. To take a 1TB drive for example: the manufacturer has built a hard drive which physically contains: 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, But since the computer sees 1MB as 1024 not 1000 bytes then the actual storage space will be smaller (around 931GB but it can depend upon what you use to evaluate the size). It is probably easiest to confirm this by working backwards to confirm the figure: 931GB = 931 x (10244) = 1012 In other words 1TB (in SI terms)  How your 1TB drive will appear to your computer   For some reason hard drive makers use this SI figure to tell you how much space is on the hard drive (the cynical would suggest that this is because it makes the drive look larger than it actually is, but then cynics are like that). On the other hand it could be defended as simple rounding and since is it universal practice across the hard drive industry it is a quirk rather than any attempt to deceive. This gap between the computer usage and hard drive manufacturers’ method of defining storage space gets larger with the capacity of the drive, by the time we get to Yotta drives (1024 bytes) there will be a difference of over 20% between advertised and actual storage space

Buy 3 months of XBLG for 15k points. It varies but each of these equates to between 50-52 days of Ultimate (x7 of these is approx 1 year for 105,000 points)

If you buy GPU with points you would need 140,000 (4 x 3 months @ 35,000)

I let mine expire then buy 4 lots of XBLG and 1 month of ultimate - total cost for 13 months is 72k points. I do this for my account and my son's

I am waiting for the family/sharing version though to hopefully simplify things. Even if they stopped the conversion thing (its been going for just over 3 yrs now and obviously helps drive sub numbers, as soon as it deosn't they'll stop it) I can keep the sub going with points.

Yeah, others have reported it not showing for them

That just takes me to the rewards dashboard - maybe they have, or are trying to, plugged the hole :(

I could just let it expire - but that's December next year and I'm confident they are going to have put the price up by then so my points won't go as far as they would now....

There's an ID@Xbox winter game demo event thingy going on at the moment which as the name suggests give a chance to try a demo of a good few upcoming games.

I was already looking forward to Aeero 2 after the first one got it's hooks into me and I'm looking forward to having a go at Astronite as it reminds me of the very enjoyable Gato Roboto :).

Accounts that have never bought XBL Gold previously don’t seem to be able to buy the top ups with points. My son’s reward points account also can’t buy them but mine can (been buying them to top up Ultimate for a few years now)

Gamepass for PC has the next best conversion rate if you have existing Ultimate. Not as good as Gold but better than buying one months ultimate.

My series X fan is so noisy now. Is taking it apart and putting new thermal paste on an option?

Its more likely just dust mate, thermal paste can be badly applied and still be ok and only give a couple of degrees difference - if its been put on like honey then your machine would have proper issues and crashes rather than being noisy, that usually just dust on the heat sink making a nice blanket keeping it all a little too warm!

When I originally signed up I used the trick to convert from gold to GP, so I don't think it's that - my account says I had a gold subscription that has been converted to GP - perhaps it's that flag that's stopping it? Ah well, really can't moan either way - the points were all free so even if it uses an extra 40k it's not actualyl costing me anything.

I think you might need to have bought Gold membership through rewards at some point in the past to still have it as a redemption option.

Or might be linked to when you started collecting reward points.

Does seem to be fairly arbitrary either way.

Am I right in thinking that you’ve mentioned about it being noisy before? If so did you manage to sort it before and it’s now come back, or have you just lived with to the point where you now no longer can?

Still noisy. Took it apart and cleaned it all twice. It didn't used to be noisy but it's a launch model

Nvidia 4090, the new AMD 7900 XTX, and a Series S.

Look, I know these bleeding edge PC cards take a dump on the Series S, and even the X, but can we just stop and appreciate the absolutely marvel of engineering and value it is. I mean, I knew it was small. I've never seen one but I'm imagining it as basically cutting a Series X vertically in half. But that image there is utterly bonkers, when you think about it.

It’s mental. I put mine away in a drawer when I’m not using it as if it was a handheld.

My gamepass expired!

I'm gonna see how long I can go before re-upping. I really want to play Petinent or whatever it's called, and the Need for Speed demo. But I've a load of paid for games on my list to finish (Bloodborne, Last of Us Part 1, Mario and Rabbids, Resi Evil 8 DLC) so I'll see if I can wait for a bit. At the very least it will stop my pay day coming in around xmas. Not good timing.

I wasn't sure where to put this so I thought I would post it here as Bethesda is a 1st party studio now. Lex Fridman has a great interview with Tod Howard up on YouTube. It's almost 3 hours long but I really enjoyed it and listened all the way through.

Me too. Gonna have a break for a bit and clear the decks on some of the games I bought.

Feels pretty good to be honest! Less choice paralysis.
