I did look into it before I bought one and obv it isn't as good as the fancy OLEDs but for the price it's outstanding. I was mainly bothered about 120hz but the sound is really good too.

 

I wouldn't have wanted you just looking at hdmi 2.1 screens that presumably would cost more but not necessarily required if just using a Series S with them

How many games actually run at more than 60fps? and the ones that do I would imagine run at 1080p anyway.

 

So, the question is how many 1440p 120fps games are there and is it worth upgrading for those few?

If you can run it at 120hz then you can set games to 40fps

I wouldn't bother buying a new display to support 1440p 120hz on Series S.

 

The number of 120hz games is tiny and I suspect that you won't see many (if any) added once developers finally drop previous gen consoles.

 

The number of games that do 120hz and 1440p is even smaller.  Once developers stop making Xbox One games, I would think that there's a strong chance you'll never see anything that does 120hz 1440p on Series S again. Maybe even 1440p at 60hz!

My take is that I wouldn’t worry too much about 120fps this gen on the Series S, especially if you can display it at 1080p. I very much doubt that many, if any, games will get higher than that. 

 

I have NioH Remastered on the PS5 which has a 120fps mode but it cuts the resolution down to 1080p. 60fps is 1440p and looks way better, and my brain can barely tell the difference with the frame rate. It’s not like 30fps and 60fps which is night and day.

Just stumbled in here and noticed that Benq monitor you had. Any downsides to that for the money? I’m 1080p 24” at the moment and I’m thinking I might need an upgrade.

I guess I'm more of an outside case with the 120hz thing as I play games where it's an option - Fortnite & Halo Infinite (I know, I know) mainly although I think they use dynamic scaling with the resolution to make it happen. I do rate the screen though and have zero complaints with it

I got the Series S after reading some good posts in this thread and never regretted forking out for it. With game pass it's great to be able to play online multiplayer with family members through one sub and cloud saves works more or less flawlessly. 

Whenever I'm out travelling for work I usually bring my Series S with me, it doesn't take up a lot of room in my luggage and I save loads of money by staying in the hotel room playing games as opposed to killing time in a pub which I pretty much used to do. 

that’s a great point. I seem to spend half my life in hotels at the moment. Does it connect easily to hotel WiFi ?

I’ve never had any issues in any of the hotels I’ve stayed at. Download speeds are usually crap, though.

Bloody hell that's a bit of a good deal isn't it!!

 

I've already got a 1TB one, and with my 500mb BB downloading 90% of games in minutes it's hard to argue that I need one but bargains pull at my purse strings like you wouldn't believe!!

 

I think I'd best go play a game and if "buy a 2TB card, go on do it" thoughts resurface (they will) I might be best off instead thinking what else I can spend £266 on!!

So now I've got an S for the office to add to the X in the lounge. Do I have to be careful with cloud saves and quick resume? If a game is quick resumable in the lounge, and then I play it in the office for a few hours, I don't want it to get confused and lose a few hours of gameplay. I understand that quick resume won't work across consoles, and I'm not worried about losing the small amount of progress between last proper save and a quick resume.

No need to worry about it at all. I have a similar set up and it’s never got confused about save states. It checks each time you open a game - even on quick resume - whether there’s a newer save it needs to load in.

I had a save issue a long time ago, when moving back and forth XSX/XB1. I lost some progress on Hades. It seems to be improved since then though, and I eco mode the XSX these days and I'm reasonably assuming it cloud syncs as part of the shutdown process.

The worst I've seen happen is that it does QR, then it must have a quick think about syncing, then it bails out and you have to load from scratch again with your latest save. 

It could be a bit smoother but seems safe.

Really impressed with the S just how much of the full-fat X experience it brings across. The first few minutes of the games I've got on the go right now still look and play great.

 

I'm way closer to the screen as I'm using a monitor in my office, instead of my unimpressively sized lounge TV that my failing eyesight struggles to read text on with the X, so 4k pixels are lost on me. I suppose it might make more sense to have the X up here but the small form factor is part of the appeal, it can live unobtrusively tucked away behind the copy of Pandemic Legacy I use for a monitor stand and I never know it's there.

 

On this monitor I can see some fairly ugly anti-aliasing on e.g. the text in Hardspace Shipbreaker but it's still fine. Will be interesting to see how it gets on with Flight Simulator once that's downloaded, as that was a game where I struggled to see fine enough detail to play it properly at TV distance.

For some reason I got it into my head that perhaps I was overstating the effect of HDR in Assassin's Creed Origins, so I decided to run it from the opening sequence on both my Series X and my PC at the same time.

 

 Good HDR is such a huge upgrade it has to be seen to be believed.

A charging cradle sounds elegant, but happy to go with whatever if it is decent.

Just got an S to mess about with... Put Prodeus on it and having a blast.

 

Not a bad little machine.. really quiet and compact. It's in the man den... Not quite sure how this will pan out really its surprisingly quick. As far as I understand it it's got a cut down GPU (targeted at 1080p) but the main CPU is the same as in the X but just under clocked a bit. So essentially this will be a bit futureproofed as its on the new Xbox architecture I'm guessing. 

 

Loving the loading times.. having recently being messing around with the OG XBO this is refreshing.

Had a XBO play and charge kit in my controller that is 9 years old and still holding its charge so I recommend the official ones...

Agree... its all I have now as a "modern" console. Loving the quick start up vs my PC. I'll probably spend more time on this than my PC now so quick to boot up and get stuck in. 

 

Thinking about it though my PC is a Ryzen 5 1600 with a GTX 980Ti. So from a tech point of view a fair bit behind the Series consoles (they are I think based on Zen 2 AMD tech). So its probably a better GamePass machine than my PC - certainly more convenient that's for sure.

I've just got a cache of rechargeable Eveready AAs and a thing that'll charge 4 at a time. That's XSX, XB1, 360, and Wii controllers all accounted for. I didn't bother with the fancy Panasonic ones everyone recommends, these (2300mAh) last ages.

get some of the amazon basics 2400mh ones, and a charger. They last for ages! like days!
