Xbox Series X | S

So I bought Megaman ZX legacy collection off the store. Was reminded it was a bit bobbins and actually the Megaman X game I wanted wasn’t in the collection. Still played a level, got an achievement but knew I wasn’t gonna really bother with it so chanced a refund a few hours later. Gotta say, fair play to Microsoft, they put the refund through within 10 minutes.

Mine loses my external drive every time the Series X does an update. Not when I resume from standby, not even on a reboot, just when a system update downloads and installs overnight. I have to physically disconnect and reconnect the external drive and then it’s fine again for a month or so until the next update.

Now you say this I think mine does this. I hadn’t clocked the relationship but it would make sense.

Anyone have any issues with their disc drives?  It’s been ages since I put a disc in my Series X, but today I wanted to try cyberpunk, since it’s been updated. It’s not reading any discs. I’ve tried changing the power/standby settings that’s recommended on YouTube etc, with no joy.

Just over a year old, obviously. I don’t really want to have to send my Xbox to Microsoft for repair. I don’t buy physical games on Xbox these days anyway, so it’s not a major issue I guess.

i think, one of the reasons my series s doesn’t get as much love as it deserves is because of the lack of drive.

which is weird, because I own LOADS of digital stuff.

maybe it’s a perceived “power” issue, and a series x would shake things up?

There’s nothing perceived about it. The Series X would definitely shake things up. Do it Sean!

Yes, it would. Buy my one.

The paddles *are* great but the rubber grips came off both of mine - the 2nd was a replacement of the 1st - so can’t really recommend them. I would be tempted if the current model was like the Series pad but it doesn’t have the share button so I suspect another revision will crop up at some point.

Convince me the Elite controller is [somehow] a worthwhile upgrade on the standard Series X controller, please.

I'm sat at home a tad off colour doing bugger all, so I'll very happily share (spoliered as it turned out quite lengthy!) with you what I find the collective pro's versus two (rather minor tbh!) cons of mine to be, and if they appeal to you and you end up getting one then I'm sure you'll be just as happy (read very much so) with it as I am with my day one Series 2.

Spoiler

So, in no particular order:

Weighty: Having a battery built in it's a bit more weighty (345g as opposed to 300g with 2 x AAs) in my hands than the standard controller. The difference in numbers isn't that big and my hands are far from being digital scales, but I can certainly feel the difference and that weight (to me) translates into a rather more solid feeling controller.

Adjustable stick tension: This was something I fiddled with a bit. At the time I was playing quite a few FPS and I actually settled on different tensions on bot sticks. Has it truly made a difference, dunno. Would I miss it if it weren't there, probably not but it is (and I'm sure some love it) so hey!

Rubber grips: Now these I really like!! Nicely warm to the touch the controller just feels more secure which in turn I think adds to the weighty feeling. Love them!! I know the Series 1 version (which I didn't own) was plagued with issues where these peeled off. Clearly MS forgot how acidic gamer hand clam and salt n vinegar Doritos are eh. 2nd gen it doesn't seem to be a problem with it being way more durable and the problem seems to be solved. I just tried to gently ease mine off with a finger nail and it wouldn't lift at all (phew!).

Hair triggers: These are fantastic!!! Having a short throw trigger just feels so much better on FPS games and I'm sure it's helped me get a few kills that I'd otherwise of missed. I'd imagine that games are programmed to sense (and act) as soon as the trigger is pulled in at all, but having the trigger stop there earlier means I don't pull in further than needed and then have to return so it's likely my 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc shots that I'm gaining on. Love em and wouldn't want to loose them!

Paddles: I've never been too good at switching from the main triggers to the shoulder buttons (and try as I might just wasn't comfortable using a separate finger for each one) nor did I feel like I was that quick on the R3 / L3 thumbstick presses so mapping my paddles to these buttons has made things way easier for me. They did take some getting used to (I probably should've got used to one pair first instead of going all in both pairs) but now that I am I'd really miss not having them. I can rattle off presses on the (micro switched) paddles way quicker than I could on the sticks and still use the sticks main control function at the same time. Again, a big big plus for me that I'd certainly miss.

Battery / Charging puck. So you get a battery rated at 40hrs (reviews seem to back this up) and a neat little charging dock / puck. If you want you then can leave the charger in the controllers supplied case as there's a hole in the back of it for the (generously long) supplied USB C lead to enter through and then sit the controller back in its case when your done, or you can have the charger sat on it's own and sit the controller down on that. It's lightly magnetised and the controller gives off a gentle vibration when correctly seated. Apparently an amber light on the controller comes on when the battery runs low (I wouldn't know as it never has) and a 15m charge gives 5-6 hrs of play time. I'm more than happy with how it works and as I've mentioned before the extra weight of the controller due to the battery is a welcome bonus too!

Minor (like, really minor!) gripes: There are two D pad options, a circular dish and a traditional 4 way / plus sign pad. Personally I prefer the plus sign one but the thing I don't like too much is that it's metal (they're magnetically attached) so it doesn't to me feel to nice! The second one is that there's no share button, though that said you can just give the home button a quick jab and then either X or Y depending on whether you want to capture a screen shot or clip. That said I've heard people complain that on the pads with the share button they sometimes accidentally hit it so maybe I should be grateful eh!!

Cheers mates. :)

I think the biggest downside would be getting used to it at home and then going my brothers and using a regular pad and having to readjust. Plus I love the regular one.

Take it with you? I did so recently taking it round to a friend of mine who's got Cerebal Palsy. We played with the paddle combination / button remapping and settled on a configuration that's made certain button presses much easier for him so he too treated himself to one :).

Oh and finally if you do go for one they're currently on sale of £144 on the MS store. If you buy MS credit from Eneba (3 x £50) using the code HOTUKDEALS it'll work out as having cost you £123.00. Hurrah!!

I can't believe how much audio I've probably missed out on over the years from not having good headphones. Or, well, mostly listening through a TV's crappy speakers. Waltzing around Greece last night and all the background audio was transformative. Not even directional stuff (but that's good) of the people I was taking out, but like dogs, and conversations, and wind, and all that jazz.

I don't do a lot of online gaming but I'd love to add some people to my friends list. I currently have one friend and he's never online so things feel a bit lonely . Is there a list of forumites I can add? My gamertag is StumbledSloth50. I will be getting Elden Ring day one and plan to do a lot of jolly co-op!

Have added you (and all the others who posted since).  Like you I rarely play online (my Xbox is pretty much a Stardew Valley machine), but would still appreciate any adds, my gamertag is mr rumbletum

Thanks for this - showed as in stock for me so ordered after a lot of thinking it through! Have to try and figure out how this game pass works for getting the best deal.

Missed out on the Xbox last gen so lots to catch up with. Will my old Treasure games from the 360 days still work?
