I'm erring towards my original plan of a giant spinning rust drive to compliment the XSX. Looking at some WD_black drives, the 2.5" external has a peak read of 140MB/s (5TB) and a 3.5" with active cooling peaking at 250MB/s (8-12TB).

If the WD drive you're looking at is one of the WD D10s (which as far as I can see are the only active cooling 8-12TB ones they do) then personally I'd advise against going for one. Price per TB they are great (when on sale) but that I'm afraid is about it!! The one I had was crazy loud (like waaaaaay beyond that of any HD I've ever had) which I've also read others reporting and the performance was no better than that of a (nice and quiet) Seagate 5400 that I had. I detailed my findings over on Hot UK deals as from time to time pop up on there. Here's a link to it in which you'll see that others also found them unberably loud:

And here's what I put in case for some reason link doesn't work or the post / thread goes missing:

Noisy as hell. Mines going back tomorrow.

As others say it is very noisy, need to unplug it when not in use.

They're a crazy loud drive aren't they!!

I bought one and put my thoughts / findings of it up on here in January:

"It's certainly a very good price per TB but please take a look at the reviews / take a read of my personal experience with one of these before taking the plunge!!

I bought one in the BF sales (£185 IIRR) which I kept set to one side for when I finally got and then set up my Series X. When all that came together (probably about 2-3 weeks ago) straight away I was more than a bit "whoa" re the noises it made. Not only were the noises way louder than that of any HD that I've had before (internal or external) but it was also grinding, clunking and pinging away even when the X wasn't running and that was with everything updated!?! I tried sitting it on foam (that helped a bit as some of the noises / vibrations were resonating through the shelf) laying it flat or standing it vertically (it has feet and a stand for the former / latter) and even using a much longer cable to pop it further away from me under my sofa and nothing brought it down to levels that weren't still easily noticeable / annoying to me.

I then ran a few back to back game loading tests with it against a Seagate 6TB drive (so 7200WD vs 5400SG) and the Series Xs own internal to see whether there was such a difference that meant I should persevere with silencing attempts. I took a look on my Seagate external at my games file sizes and I had more in that were 10-20GB than any other size so I picked Crackdown 3 (15GB) as my test game and here are the results of 3 x CD3 loadings from each drive:

Series X internal
1) 24:23
2) 30:38
3) 29:21
Total 01:23.82 (freaky fast first load gives it the win, tried 4/5 times again and couldn't get it to repeat it! That said it did do the time so it's in here, just don't count on it doing it again!!)

Seagate 6TB
1) 30:51
2) 30:45
3) 31:51
Total 01:32.47

WD 12TB
1) 33:55
2) 30:92
3) 29:95
Total 01:34.02

TLDR. Good value per TB but be aware that it's by far the loudest HD I've ever owned to the point of having to return it. Many other Amazon reviews also mention as to how incredibly loud it it is. Sadly no good for me and with no speed advantage (I was a bit surprised by that) it went back. I now use a Seagate 6TB Backup Plus Hub (same as this one) which sits on my home office desk about 2-3 ft away from me and is whisper quiet 90% of the time to the point that this fella's fine with it....

Yeah, it's the D10. Glad I asked, that's great feedback. It has to be silent in the livingroom. I know you can have the Xbox turn them off when not in use, but I've noticed ye olde faithful 2tb seagate on my XB1 upstairs still powers up when the console is off. Maybe it's doing some Instant On behind the scenes stuff, no idea. But I had to tape over the bright blue LED light on it.

I couldn't quite see the seagate you have there, a very content kitty in the way. Is this basically it? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072QH2JCL?ref=emc_p_m_5_i&th=1

Feature to double tap the sync button to toggle between a synced device (e.g., PC) and an Xbox rolling out to alpha insiders. That'll be excellent, I think I'll sync one of the XSX controllers to me PC, finally. Also, this will enable BT LE and other stuff for better latency.

I had a distinct sense of dejavu reading your post - isn’t this feature already available? And yes, it is, this is something you’ve been able to do for a while now - the current beta is for bluetooth Xbone controllers.

If you’ve got an SX controller you can do this now! It’s extremely handy, say, when you want to do a bit of Gamepass steaming on your laptop.

I binned off my external sea gate 2tb drive as with the new consoles being so quiet the spin up of the external was annoying - just run an external ssd now, size is defi an issue as the 1tb I initially got is full….

Yes that's the white 8TB version that they do and I can vouch for that as being as quiet as my 6TB one, as a good friend of mine who was equally aghast at the noise levels of the WD drive witnessed how quiet the Seagate one was in comparison and grabbed the same one that you've linked to for use with his series X so when it came we took a particular interest in it's noise levels and it's nice and quiet.

Just one thing re the noise of them and that's that whilst they are very quiet they're not completely silent though I guess that's just how it is with mechanical drives but I'd be amazed if you found the noise of these to be a problem. My cat head rest one of is actually in my home office sat within arms reach and I genuinely don't ever hear it make a noise but it does for some reason seem to behave a little differently to the one I've got downstairs hooked up to my Series X. That one is not only more seems to be a good bit more active but it's also sat horizontally on a glass stand with metal legs so I probably could't make it purposely sound louder if I tried! As a little experiment I've just sat it on two foam scouring pads (to isolate the vibrations) and then transferred a couple of games back and forth between it and the internal drive and it's barely audible with me having to concentrate / listen rather carefully for it to hear anything going on. So silent no, but very quite and completely unobtrusive in my front room, absolutely.

Are you over in the States (only asking as your Amazon link was from the US site)? If not then here's a link to the UK site with the 6TB one listed which offers the best £ / TB:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-Desktop-External-Creative-Photography/dp/B01IAD5ZEE/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=seagate%2B6tb&qid=1632218656&sr=8-1-spons&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFLUDI1OUtCSVhWSEwmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTA0NzQ3MTUyQUhVSUlSUU9CQzBGJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTAxOTA1NzEyUVRGUzRUU1JLSDJMJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ&th=1

Oh and the USB ports on the front of it have enough ooomph to charge my phone pretty damn quickly and also are fine for running my SNES Classic Mini which was the icing on the HDD cake for me :).

My Series X is due to arrive today from Amazon! Anytime from now.

What I'm getting excited about is that I can play my old Xbox 360 games?! Can I download them straight to the series X if I've bought them digitally?

Also I'm guessing a lot don't work; i.e. I didn't see Dragon's Dogma on the list (even though I have it on PS4, Switch, PC too haha!)

Your library should be right there waiting for you, so get downloading. :)

Not all Xbox 360 games are compatible but a surprising number are, and of those, a lot of them look and run better than ever before.

If you have any games on disc still, you can even put those in and see if they work.

...is it wrong that I will immediately want to play EDF 2017?! 😍

So after having a Series S for 9 months (has it been that long already?!), my thoughts on the Series X:

-Feels identical to the S, unsurprisingly. Menus and everything are just as responsive.

-Most games look slightly improved - Forza Horizon 4 for example, 1080p60 on S and 4K60 on X. It looks nicer, but really not a big deal at all.

-Some games do look way better - mainly the sub-1080p ones. Flight Sim is night and day. So much cleaner looking.

-It's really nice having 1TB storage after having so little on the S.

Anyway, it's confirmed my suspicion that you can't go wrong with either console. I'm glad for the extra storage and not having the niggling thought that the 4K version of the game I'm playing must be way better, but it just kind of emphasises what a wonder the Series S is.

I'm gonna be sad to see that little thing go, but I'm keeping the white controller. It's way nicer than the black one.

And I've just bought an S as my first current-gen console (after asking the question in here) and it's amazing.

Primarily it's just that everything is really simple - it's the kind of simple you would naively expect a console to be, if you hadn't used one before. The UI is clean and effective (at least compared to my PS4), using Game Pass is easy, and I keep getting surprised when I start up a game again and it's instantly ready to go.

Game Pass is an absurdly good deal - if it was a Google product, I'd be expecting a email saying it's being 'sunsetted' any day now.

Storage hasn't been an issue, but I'm not playing many massive games. All round I'm happy - I'm glad I got the cheaper option, because I go through rounds of buyer's remorse when buying gaming stuff but it's pretty hard to regret such an excellent machine.

I thought I'd try Dirt 5 on Series X - it was super blurry on Series S. Turns out it's still pretty soft - even on the prioritise image quality res!

Imagine buying this for £50 or whatever on launch as a showcase for your new next-gen console! What a bloody disappointment that must have been. Looks worse than FH4 to my eyes, and it's not even open world.

I also tried Dirt 5 this week and agree that apart from being lovely and smooth it doesn’t look that special.

What did surprise me though is that there is a really decent game buried amongst some truly horrible (but thankfully mostly skippable) cutscenes and voiceovers. I’ve really enjoyed the course and car variety and the racing itself has been close and exciting. Not sure if I’ll play it to completion but it’s an entertaining enough diversion while waiting on FH5.

Phil looking sharp in a tie.

I tried syncing the XSX pad to my laptop last night, as I didn't realize it could quickly switch between bluetooth sync/console. Just a quick note for everyone else having this issue - I pressed the sync button, white Xbox logo started flashing, turned on BT on Win 10 and selected the pad in the list of things the laptop detected. That was it, or so I thought. It showed as "connected" while on, and "paired" while the pad was off, but the Xbox app couldn't detect it for cloud streaming. A reboot fixed it. Weird!

I played some Wreckfest via cloud streaming, it's magic when it works. This is going to be so much easier for getting the GP quests and not having to install a game.

One thing - turning the pad on to sync it with the PC turned the XSX on, because that's what it was last connected to. I don't suppose there's a way to avoid that? Also, once I was done, I couldn't figure out how to turn the pad off. I suppose toggling BT off in Windows and letting it figure out it's connected to nothing and turn itself off? Or power down the laptop and wait for the same thing. Seems like a slight waste of battery. I tried long press of the white Xbox button but that activates some sort of game mode HUD in Windows now.
