Xbox Series X | S

Only had a very very quick play, Daytona & Crazy Taxi.

Initial impressions - This is a gaming jukebox!

QR didn’t work on Daytona, but did on CT. First Xbox 360 load was slow as it downloaded my profile, but fast afterwards.

I set a number of games to download from the Xbox App on my iPad, it didn’t work - checked the console and the queue was empty. It ruined a great ‘first impression’ of the app. Did it all again on the console and now have a healthy download queue.

OS Interface is improved over the one I remember.

Controller feels good in the hand, nice tweaks from the Xbox One version.

Console is fast, small & silent.

I’m most excited about playing Xbox 360 games again, there are a number I’d like to pick up - do these still appear in the sales? I have quite a few on disc which I obviously can’t use.

I will try out retroarch at some point, upscaled GameCube games appeal.

Are expansion storage drives hot-swappable on the Xbox? Whilst I can see no way in god I'd have multiple ones of those fancy Seagate drives, after watching the 1tb of the thing full up alarmingly quickly I'm thinking I need some extra space in there.

Might be a better option to just get a large external SSD and copy Series games across when you want to play them, it’s pretty quick and would certainly be a lot cheaper.

That's a good call. Forgot about that way of doing things. So, I could actually cheap out even more and just bung an old mechanical harddrive into an enclosure and that'd work okay too I guess?

Yep,  it'll just take longer.  Iirc, it needs to be a USB3 connection.

Yes although obviously the copy time will be slower.

I was playing No Man's Sky last night, and when I removed my headphones I noticed my Series X was pretty bloody loud. That fan was going like the clappers. There have been a couple of times recently when it's been very audible while playing modern games. I put Skate 3 on (a 360 game) and it quietened right down. I don't think I ever had this with Series-optimised games before. Has anyone else had their Series X get louder since they got it?

Mine was a little audible when it was on its side in a TV unit, but since I moved it out into the open and positioned it vertically it's been completely silent at all times. It does get a bit toasty round the top but I never hear the fan, ever.

Mine is still quiet, I’m paranoid about this sort of thing - I’ve got it stood upright on top of my AV unit with plenty of room all around it.

I also turn the power saving settings to completely off unless I’m downloading something.

Hmm, mine is on top on my TV unit, upright, behind the TV. It's got plenty of airflow around it. I'll keep an eye (ear) on it.

I wonder if how it's stood has any bearing?  I have mine on its side as I thought that the grid on the vertical base bit might be important but I'm largely clueless.  Mine is pretty quiet though.  In context, Joey comes running to see what all the fuss is about when I need to reboot my Sky Q box, but whenever I turn the Xbox on or off, he only pays attention to the beeps as he knows the off beeps mean it's bedtime

I’m still using the exact same 7200rpm 4tb Seagate drive I’ve been using since the Xbox One and it’s fine. Takes about 5-10 mins to copy a game back onto the internal, copying them off a bit slower, but compared to re-downloading and re-installing things it’s no hassle at all. Also you can run all the back-compat stuff (and a few Series X/S enhanced titles) off the external anyway.

I only use the internal storage for dedicated next-gen games and the occasional open-worlder that greatly benefits from the speed increase (Witcher 3, Cyberpunk, etc). Also in these days of queuing games to download remotely it’s better to have them default to the larger storage, so you don’t come home and find that nothing has happened because your drive didn’t have enough space for a CoD patch or something.

My Series X is completely silent. It really highlights how loud the external drive is, which isn't that loud really, but I have to unplug on a night or I can't sleep in the same room as it.

Disc drive is a pain in the arse though. I have to be selective with what I play once the kid is in bed in the next room or it sounds like the whole house is going to take off.

Hmmm, I should really check my disk drive actually works. Had it since launch, and never had the need to use it yet.

My son wanted to play a disc game the other day and I said he couldn’t. It was 10 minutes before I remembered the X has a disc drive.

I contemplated googling which way the disc should be inserted until we reasoned it was too close to one edge for the business end of the drive to be there. Felt like a plum.

I've got mine stood behind and to the left of the TV and still whisper quiet, so far. I need to check the light to know if it's on. That said, we have a bonkers amount of pet hair and dust in this house, despite constant cleaning, vacuuming and several air filters running. I'm kinda expecting the X to get audible at some point and I hope there's some way to clean it.

Possibly a very stupid question, but there we go.

So, I have a disc version of a game installed on the Series X. If I buy a digital version of the thing, does it get treated as a whole new 'thing' and try to install it again, or will it just see the installed parts of the disc version and just adapt to fill in whatever gaps it needs to, to work okay?

Thank you, it does indeed work. The thought of redownloading 100gb of data would be a right pain in the preverbials.

Goes off to download something else because he's got a new toy and wants to check it all out...

The odd thing with series X is if you have a disc in the drive and arnt playing that game, the drive continues to be noisy. I wish you could disable it without having to remove the disc.

Also yakuza like a dragon is amazing. Can't believe what a difference a change in battle system makes.

Don't use discs, problem solved :)

I say that as a crazy lazy person who has rebought all his favourite 360 games digitally even though I still have the discs sitting right here. (I bought them all during sales though, I'm not *that* crazy)
