Isn't it that the dashboard setting means "up to, depending on software" rather than "always"?

Nope, apparently not with the Xbox!

It's all in that video. I appreciate it's 15 mins long or something, but Vincent points out that the Xbox will always output 120 frames which cuts down input lag by half.

If you're playing a locked to 60 fps game, the machine will send the frame, then a duplicate frame to the tv, before moving to the next one.

I just ordered one of the massively overpriced memory expansions because fuck it.

I can’t deny that I’m tempted - I keep having to transfer stuff between my internal and external drives. Of course, I could just stick to playing a limited number of games at once... and tbh, a couple on the internal are ones that I ‘want’ to have there but am not actually playing.

I just bought a cheapish external ssd instead, can dump all the non-x games I'm playing onto that and still get the super fast loading. copying back and forth takes seconds and it doesn't make the racket my external hdd was making.

If there was a 1tb version of the expansion card though, I'd be tempted. The value is OK actually, it's just too expensive for me because of the size.

Isn't the expansion card 1tb?

In that case it's way too expensive, I thought it was 2tb!

I think the storage is just that expensive at the moment, whether it's the bespoke xbox storage or an equivalent generic drive for a pc.

I don't know how long it'll take for the prices to come down, but aside from the cost,  there's only one slot on the machine, so when they do increase the size of cards, you'll have to sell off your existing card (or swap them in and out) too.

By the time the price drops or capacity increases, I think I'll be fairly happy to just keep on as I am, "archiving" to an external drive.

I think 2TB total storage is plenty for me, so I'm definitely keen to get the expansion once I've built up my MS Rewards. Any more than 2TB and I'd just be storing a big library of stuff I'm unlikely to play.

1TB is definitely a little on the small side - more so since the Series X came out and Quick Resume / general speed of loading has seen me skip between more games than I would've done last generation. I've been doing a fair bit of juggling, whereas before (when I had 5TB of HDD space) I didn't even think about how big each game was. Now I'm hyper-aware of the size of each game!

Apologies, I had it wrong, I thought it was something the machine could take advantage of with some titles, not every title.

But they're not expensive for what they are.

How does the Xbox duplicating frames so it’s always sending 120 per second halve input lag?

If the game is running at 60fps output (and assuming its main loop is also bound to this) then the input lag is unchanged regardless of what the machine does.

I’m about to pull the trigger on a Crucial MX500 1TB with Sabrent SATA to USB connector for a cool £101 from Amazon. Based on that one Digital Foundry video where Rich compared a Samsung QVO 870 and showed that an SSD could do the business on Xbox One games quite handily, I think this is a Wise Purchase.

Question to those in the know - does this sound about right, or am I about to buy a one-way ticket on the idiot bus to Idiotsville?

The game is running at 120hz, but generates a new image every 60hz. So you can trigger an action between frames, if you see what I mean.

Maybe I’m missing something (I admit I’ve not watched the video). But is there a specific game we’re talking about here that does run at 120fps? I thought the conversation was simply that the Xbox always outputs 120 regardless of game speed. Filling in the extras by just sending out the same frame until it gets a new one in its buffer.

The machines extra frames aren’t changing the run rate of the game. That’s a developer decision (except for the crazy cool backwards compatibility idea). So it’s still just reading input ever 1/60th of a second.
