After the 360 engineering faux pas, it's hard to fault the XSX. It's a fast PC I've never heard.

MS learnt a lot from that! :D Also to be fair never had a 360 RRoD me. Maybe I was lucky. I remember when I first played on my 360 though shortly after launch and removing a disk for the first time after an hour or so of playing.... wow it was hot. I wasn't surprised one bit when they started having issues. Lots of high end tech crammed in such a small place back then. Still is an awesome machine though. The E version is great super cool and quiet (once you've installed the games to the HDD!).

With a toddler I'm too worried about the holes at the top being seen as a fun place to put things if I left it vertical...

Shit, i didnt think of that. My 4 month old grandaughter will be walking and destroying shit soon. I

Having these vertical is very dangerous, especially in such a small living room like i have. Im going to have to work out another solution.

I actually really like the Xbox parental permissions, they're really granular and - crucially - you can override them for individual games if you think it's OK. My son can play anything up to 12 rating but on occasion if I know a game with an older rating is suitable, I can log in with my profile and grant him permission, either as a one-off or as a permanent thing.

Plus it's all linked in with Microsoft Family Safety so I can monitor exactly what he's up to, on the Xbox and PC if I need to.

It's so much better than the Sony equivalent where there is simply no way your child can play online if a game is rated above their actual age. You have no ability to override that in any way. Deeply frustrating, especially given the randomness of videogame age ratings.

Indeed its great. Have my youngest son in the family account. IMHO its best to manage devices and accounts etc from a web browser and going to the accounts page there.

The monitoring is great it even lists all the apps/games and play time for the week and emails you a report over. Works really well. He spends scary amounts of time on Fortnite :) Although noticed he now plays it mostly on the Switch..

Agree about the Sony way too... had a nightmare when my eldest son had a Playstation Vita and he couldn't download stuff as he got older. Probably changed now (hopefully) as it was a few years ago now.

I don’t think a toddler would care if it was horizontal or vertical. If there’s holes to jam things in they inevitably will!

My X started vertical next to the tv, and was interesting to the toddler, but hidden under the TV in a black TV unit, it's far less interesting*. So the risk isn't zero, but it is lower.

* partly, i'm sure, because it looks so much worse horizontal.

Also somewhat dangerous being at perfect crotch height...

Setting up a child account with actual useable permissions for a 5 year old is however a fucking nightmare.

I think I would start out by creating the Microsoft account and entering their age. Probably from the Family portal in your own account, via a browser (for your sanity). Once created, with age defaults, go through it all and create custom values. I tweaked just enough to let my kids play on the official Minecraft servers and I think allowed 3rd party levels for some other game. Otherwise, I just enter my pin every time they try to access a game that isn't rated for them. They know to call me over when that message appears on screen. You can also do it via the family app now.

I don't have anything too awful installed, but if I did I'd probably put my own account behind a pin login.

It's overwhelming but actually really comprehensive. Like a character generator that you just want to skip to play the damn game but eventually like that you can shade each toenail differently.

Thanks! I’ll have a look through a browser, we’ve hit the point where I have allowed Roblox, but the option to allow user-generated content needs to be enabled too but is greyed-out in the console menus and not present in the app.

Main thing is that I have nuked in app purchases for him though.

I ordered a Series X from Currys this morning and it was set to arrive next Thursday. Just had an email now saying it will be here by the 23rd at the latest, that makes me wonder if they had them in stock or not?

A minor annoyance is that it wouldn’t let me log in this morning so I checked out as a guest. The receipt etc came to the same email address as my account but for my sanity I’d like it under my account.

I wonder if they’ll end up cancelling it altogether though?

I’d hope not. There does seem to be a few more getting out now, so I think you’ll be ok.

I’m more surprised you haven’t already got one to be honest!

I didn’t have a 4K TV so cancelled my X preorder and got an S. I nearly got one a few times but waited until I got a new tv first. I feel a bit indulgent as I have the S connected to a 1440p 120Hz HDR screen upstairs anyway

This console is awesome, so far I’ve played a bit of the latest Ori and Tetris Effect and then my daughter insisted I download Disneyland Adventures, since then I haven’t had a look in.

But I love it, it’s quiet, everything loads so fast, and all the games look amazing.

Very pleased :)

My Series X arrived today and just downloading a bunch of games.

First impressions, love the design, fits perfectly on my shelf. Completely silent! Almost spookily quiet. UI seems pretty identical to the One, as is the controller.

Only hiccups so far are that on the Gamepass page when I click on a game, the description is too big and goes beyond the screen boundary. Hope my hdmi cable isn’t doing something weird. Also, despite setting up via the app using a code, the Gamepass app seems to still thinks I’m using a One X.

I got a PS5 the other day too by some miracle, but I’m only keeping one. Wrote a list of games I’ll be playing for both consoles, compared which ones are exclusive, last-gen and coming soon. Not much in it really. Then compared the aesthetics and ambient noise.

So unless there’s some last minute Xbox catastrophe, the PS5’s all boxed up and heading on to a new owner soon.

Think I'll be waiting for a hardware revision before I go anywhere near a PS5. Hopefully the system software will be more stable at that point too. Other thing I'm waiting to see pan out is PSVR and GT7 both of which have been pushed back until next year. More than happy with my Series X and waiting to see what Sony do.

Make sure you have overscan turned off/disabled on your TV.
