It's not something you actively use? It just does it,  right? Play one of the last 6 or so games that you've played and it just works (for most things).

But I tend to quit my games from the home menu unless I'm going to be booting up the Xbox again in the near future

Maybe it's a habit I can now get out of.

I sent mine back. If you already have an external drive that works I don’t really see the point in spending £220 to save a few seconds on loading time/some under telly real estate.

Unless you’re the type of person who plays loads of different games simultaneously I wouldn’t bother for now.

My main problem now is my external HDD is the only thing that makes any noise. Plus it seems to be constantly whirring even when not in use. As a result, I've got it sitting next to the Xbox but not plugged in, which undoes any conveniences somewhat.

Mine was quite noisy but I moved it and it must be on a less resonant spot as I can't hear it now.  Maybe get something that'll stop the vibration travelling to put in between it and whatever it rests on.

Get an external SSD, speed and silence!

I did consider it (I think I asked your advice, in fact) but I think that it's not worth it to me, if the SSD and interface is £100ish, I'd be inclined to just buy the official card and have done with it. I really need to find a way to keep using my external drives too - they're just clutter and then landfill otherwise.

I put my external HDD on some little polystyrene feet that I made from some old packing. Works like a charm for soaking up the annoying vibration.

Not much cheaper than £100 I know but Amazon have the external sunbow 1tb ssd for £96 - no need to buy a sata interface etc and its in a neat case

I think the "internal" sunbow might be a smidge faster

Gentlemen, I feel your pain .

I too bought an external, it being a mahoosive 12TB WD fella that popped up in the BF sales for a very reasonable £185. In the reviews of it some people did mention the noise but I didn't expect it to be any worse than my Seagate backup plus (that I'd used for a couple of years with my One X) which itself made the odd buzz, click / whir / "hey I'm busy here" noise, none of which were particularly loud and as such didn't bother me one bit.

The WD though....wow! Just like, WTF is going on there!! It was sat at the back of my gaming tower of power but straight away when I gave my Series X its first ever boot up (in turn kicking the WD into life) I was like whoa, that's bloody loud!?! I straight away recognised the sound as being that of a HDD and thought at first I was maybe just picking the sound out as I was concentrating on the new set up, but no it was demented rodent trying to get eat it's way out of a mahogany box loud to the point where within 10min's of wonderment I'd decided it was either getting sorted or getting sent back, the latter of which I didn't really want to have to do.

Aaaanyway long story (who me?!?) cut short I was aware that there were likely big improvements to be made placement wise alone as it sits upon a plastic clip on base (it has two very thin rubber strips on it's bottom, I suspect to stop it sliding as opposed to quieten things down) which itself is a little loose so perhaps makes some noise, but more so is then sat on a glass shelf supported by metal bars. It's almost as if I've tried to create a HDD powered instrument!! Straight away when I popped in onto its side and sat it on top of a sponge Dyson vac filter the improvement was massive though being the fiddler that I am I'm pretty sure I can make things better still. I'm also bored with a gazillion hrs to myself so why not have a mess about and just this morning nipped into the garage and dug out some sound suppression equipment (read squidgy elasticy spongy stuff that's as whos manufactured purposes are as far away from sound suppression when used as intended as a jumbo jet is) and after work I WILL sort it out and we WILL live together in a blissfully quiet front room HDD harmony.

Place yer bets..

I have been using one of these on OSX. It's failed in just 6months.

I had just started transferring games etc from my One X onto a 2tb drive that came today when my wife heard the guy at the door.

Props to Microsoft. Ordered less than 48 hours ago and wasn't due until Monday.

Now excuse me while I kiss the sky!

Enjoy! :)

Apologies all I onyl suggested it as people suggest the Sunbow Internal drives as being decent so I thought the external would be as well.

Thanks for the info!
