Ah OK. Is that going to cause me any problems with normal use?

I will be using the series X far more than they will be.

Is there a guide somewhere on the exact steps needed to set it up?

It’s the set up I use with my kids. Their Xbox is in the playroom and mine is on my desk. Theirs is set as the home/primary console.

The setting for it is under ‘personalisation’ iirc rather than account or system or anything like that. It’s as simple as selecting the ‘this is my primary console’ setting.

I haven’t noted any downsides but if your internet connection was to drop you’d be signed out of the game you were playing on your machine as it couldn’t validate the license.

Totally flip flopping over picking up an S from Argos. Should I?

I would always recommend anyone seriously into games to get an X.

It's my primary console and prospect of. All the Ganepass Microsoft 1st party games looking their best on it seems like the best option. And there's tons of games on the horizon.

I honestly do wonder if I actually need a PS5 at all. I spend nearly all my gaming time on Game Pass. Maybe I should have just gone for the X so I have a disc drive and be done with it.

But it's great that pretty much whichever console you pick, you're pretty much sorted. It's nothing like last gen where owning a base Xbox meant awful performance.

VR is the only reason I still want a PS5, I’m hoping I can get over my FOMO and stop buying the Sony exclusives as I just don’t like them but I  still have this weird need to get them - in my defence I really liked GoW and finally played TLOU and the DLC to conclusion and did enjoy them to a point but the sooner i just accept those games aren’t for me the better - a Sony gamepass equivalent would actually be dangerous for me as it would justify me just trying out those games...

Having fired up the PS4 it’s clear Sony do glitz and glam much better than MS do but functionally they are way behind MS and somehow the PS5 UI is a step back from the pretty dire PS4 - I’m still shocked that games update themselves on Xbox in standby mode due to years of the PS4 not doing it...

My mini review of the series x at this point is generally glowing, the speed of it while being silent is such a big QOL improvement over last gen I’d take that alone tbh.

However there are some things I can’t get my head around, we are in the second gen of game recording being a thing and it seems it’s got worse on the series consoles... I remember my original Xbox one having an app to basically edit and upload some clips and now you can’t do either and it relies on you doing that on another device - seems a backwards step and something Sony did much better on PS4 but even they seem to have messed that up to some degree on the PS5.

Definitely suffer from this too. However this time decided to only have one console. On the basis of the fact I only enjoyed a handful of games on the PS4 and didn't enioy their big AAA output anyway.

Still like to mess around with a PS5 and controller with Astrobot though. Just not convinced I am £450 bothered... :D

Have to say I've had the Series X for around a month now and its the best piece of console hardware I've owned. Echo @Uncle Nasty 's summary.

Exactly the same here, those third person map moppers bore me to death but I always buy them. Days Gone, God Of War, Horizon etc - every single time I forget myself and buy them day one and always regret it.The only thing that would tempt me back to Sony this gen would be another unmissable exclusive by, say, Fromsoft, or a massive disparity in performance between the consoles in Sony's favour, but apart from that it feels good to have a break from the Sony way of doing things. Even downloading games is much faster on the Xbox over exactly the same connection.

Meant to say, another feature I appreciated was buying the storage addon and play & charge kit direct from MS through the Xbox dash, arrived faster than Amazon's estimated time and was a pleasingly slick process. Too easy, perhaps.

I find my FOMO regarding games isn't really that much when I only have one platform, as that's what I concentrate on. When I've got more than one, there's so many games that I never feel like I'm really getting the most out of them.

With the game recording thing, I think MS have taken the right approach. There are no scenarios in which I want to be editing video with a controller. Just let me get it onto my phone as quickly as possible, where it's quicker to edit and easier to share.

I got completely screwed by shopconsole.com. €500 they stole from me for an X, from all the comments and reviews I see, I'm not getting the money back.

Merry Christmas,

Not pay on credit card? I think even debit cards are covered like credit cards these days. Why aren'tt you getting the money back?

The other way they couldn’t play my stuff or play online without my account signed in on that console which also means I wouldn’t be able to be signed in on the other one myself.

I've had a word with the bank, they are looking into it but as I've already willingly paid for it, there's not a lot they can do.

Merry Christmas,

Who the hell are they? Apart from scam merchants by the sound of it.

S Club members might be interested in the fact that the new Gears 5 update lets you customise the install, like the MCC. Managed to save 20GB by removing the pointless customisation and multiplayer.

The base mandatory install is now 32GB and you can tack bits onto that, like Hivebusters, which is 7GB, or the main campaign, which is 15GB.

I nearly bought a series S earlier when they appeared in stock so I could setup a haven in my home office for when the kids take over the big tele at Xmas.

Help me. My partner is not going to like it but I don’t feel I have a choice.

That’s pretty much what I’ve done, not necessarily for Christmas though.

I'm in mine right now, it's an oasis of calm.

I don't think there's much I can add that hasn't been said to the X convenience really. It's quiet, it's quick, set up was piss easy, the pad feels solid and more tactile than the already excellent One pad, upgrading things takes forever because each one I've done has been at least 60 fucking gigs, Destiny 2 60 frames is fucking glorious and quick resume hasn't worked at all for me yet.

So aye, it's not bad.

It’s much more likely that people would share libraries if you could have your account on secondary consoles with everything working offline, I suppose. Plus there are the security considerations... primary console will always be able to make purchases using the main account, so presumably the current policy makes it more likely that only trusted people will have access to your library, and that therefore reduces sharing again.

I’m a tiny bit apprehensive, as my 8 year old ‘inherited’ my Xbox One X and he lives with his mum in Exeter. I left that one as my account’s primary console, while password protecting payments as much as I could (so I don’t think he could buy anything on my account if he inexplicably went rogue), as well as increasing his account’s age checks to 12 and over, as it seemed that every time he started a game I was having to authorise it.

Everything’s working well so far with that. If I have an internet outage, I’ll tether to my phone to pass the online check, I guess! Although it’s subject to this weird workaround, it’s cool that more than one person can access your games library.
