do you have it installed twice? Ie once internal and once external?

I'll check. I did move it initially from external to internal so I'll go and have a snoop around on both drives.

Tech is too complicated these days. Give me back a Gamecube!

I don't like how menu window text in the UI briefly appears in low res then appears sharper. Does this happen for everyone?

I think it's because of the zoom animation. So it starts off as a smaller font that gets scaled during the animation and then the normal font is shown.

People having trouble with QR really need to try The Messenger. I hadn’t played for about 10 days, played loads of other games in between, downloaded and tried some GP games, did the system update and then reset the console twice to get HDMI CEC working again. Loaded it up, right back where I was. That game is a bitter ex. It will not forget exactly what you did.

I noticed yesterday that Quick Resume works like a 100% for all Xbox One generation games I tried. But it fails spectacularly on almost all Series S|X optimized game. So the bug seems to be in that SDK, at least based on my limited testing with 20+ games yesterday.

Update: Series X power consumption in Instant-On mode seems to have been improved after the last update. Was 27, now 10 watt. Source: this Reddit post.

And another important detail:

We have confirmation that if you want ZERO RPM fan @ Instant-On mode you need to QUIT the game you're playing THEN shut-off.

This is the problem really. It does too much "stuff". Every feature added increases the chance of something going wrong...Then you factor in supporting multiple devices in an eco-system that are all running with the same firmware. Still at least MS are kind of used to this with Windows. :)

Indeed. Well, disconnecting the external hard drive and trying to run the game didn't work and cannot see multiple copies of it. So, I've copied everything to the external and will factory reset the machine tonight and then redownload it without reconnecting the other hard drive and see if that does the trick.

And that's the issue really, there are so many factors involved in today's consoles that it is really difficult to troubleshoot effectively. If the factory reset doesn't work I will be well and truly stumped.

Does someone have a link to the Gamepass ultimate workaround if it's still available?

Edit - found it, I assume the £1 deal is still available?

Only if you've never used it before. If you have then the deal is the same but it's 10.99 instead of 1. Still an amazing bargain.

Never used gamepass? I haven't. I assume the fact my live account goes back to Xbox 360 days makes no difference? Or should I make a new one?

Yeah that's what MS said at the time of launch. It works fine on Gears Tactics, Yakuza LaD and Forza Horizon 4 though, I am sure it will be sorted fairly soon.

These systems have been coming in hot certainly.

HOW ??? I could only add 3 years to mine, couldn't even claim the extra free month, so up to 28/11/23 :(

No idea mate, I just followed Darren's instructions and that's what it did.

Edit - I misread, it's February 2nd 2024 when it runs out.

Frustrating thing came to light about the Series S yesterday for me - plugged it into a 1080p display which supports HDR10, only to found that HDR functionality is locked to only work on 4K displays - the console appears to need to detect 4K compatability before it will allow HDR to be turned on.  Bit daft if you ask me.

Actually can't believe how well the Saturn is emulated, gonna get Burning Rangers going next.

I need to look into this. Are you running retroarch? How do you get the games onto the actual xbox?

It took me a while - my best advice would be to read through the thread on resetera here https://www.resetera.com/threads/the-299-xbox-series-s-is-an-emulation-beast-mvg.331526/ and watch this youtube video which explains how it works.

I can try and help with any other issues you run into if you try it, I pretty much fumbled my way through it all admittingly.

Do you have a friend who understands computers? That's what my friends normally do.

Sorry, could you post the link. Might as well finally do it. (I think I've used the £1 deal before however)

It's in the opening post of this thread, slightly hidden (you have to open up the quote)

Do we have a tech thread for TVs? My TV has started to develop a dark clouding issue even though its only 14 months old. Might as well try to get a new one and pay it up but would prefer one thats maybe 120hz and doesnt cost a fortune

It doesn't matter if you've used the £1 deal before or not. As long as you don't have an active sub....

Showing my ignorance here but there doesn't seem to be clear info on all this. Do I need a 120hz display to get the most from my console and is it a big deal? From what I gather I need it to get frame rates over 60fps, but then again is it a big deal?

From my limited understanding, a PS5 or Series X needs a large (because a smaller screen won't look any different to 1080p) 4K display capable of 120hz and those are big, big money. Am I misunderstanding everything?

Series X and PS5 are 4K consoles. But on 1080p Full HD TV you will get pristine 4k which is downscaled to 1080p HD. You will also get Ray Tracing at 60fps in some games, like Devil May Cry 5 SE. So a Series X or PS5 doesn't force you to buy a 4K TV. But of course a lot of games will look better in 4k with HDR and VRR or 120fps.
