He’s also got the same section on Series X on his channel and I’m pleasantly surprised just how well the Series S holds up. X looks a bit sharper but certainly not night and day.

Considering I’ve been playing loads of games at 900p recently, I think I’ll be very happy with an S as a Game Pass machine.

I know it's had absolutely bang average reviews but wandering around London in Watch Dogs looks too entertaining to skip.

I bought Morrowind and Fallen Order for launch btw, before the latter was added to EA Play and before the Bethesda deal was announced.

I had a failed payment with TheGameCollection. I prepaid with Paypal over a month ago but the said it was refused. When I look at my Paypal statement there is no record of the transaction so I think the site must have screwed up when I placed the order.

Luckily it is only for games!

Same thing has happened with one other order which has some PS5 games. That will probably fail on Tuesday.

Still, no real harm done as I am not setting up both consoles until Christmas.

Taken from https://www.purexbox.com/news/2020/11/here_are_some_xbox_series_xs_issues_you_might_run_into_on_launch_day?fbclid=IwAR2LcD4nccpZE8G3jrcpDlIDYi3Fniuuj2iH862Z971RwJfkg1X5SgMrIgY

here’s a list of issues to look out for...

"What an exciting time! The Xbox Series X|S have both launched and we hope you are enjoying your time with the next generation of gaming! In the event you do run in to any issues though, we have you covered. Some issues might be known issues and we have the proper teams hard at work to resolve these instances ASAP. Be sure to check below for any issue you might be experiencing."

4K/120hz

Known Issue: If you are using a 4K@120Hz TV that also supports VRR you might encounter no signal or corrupted image when the Xbox is configured for 4K120+VRR. This issue occurs with various TVs from LG, Samsung, or Vizio.

Workaround:
Update to the latest firmware on your TV

If using an LG TV - https://www.lg.com/us/support/software-firmware-drivers

If using a Samsung TV - https://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/

If using a Vizio TV - https://support.vizio.com/s/firmware-search

If the issue still persists, also consider trying the following:

Configure the console for 4K/60 with VRR by going to Setting> General> TV & display options> Video Modes> check the box for Allow variable refresh rate.

Configure the console for 4k/120 with no VRR by going to Setting> General> TV & display options> Video Modes> uncheck the box for Allow variable refresh rate. The resolution and refresh rates are found under “Display” in TV & Display options.

If you wish to experience 120hz and VRR, please configure for 1080p/120hz VRR or 1440p/120hz VRR by Setting> General> TV & display options> Video Modes> check the box for Allow variable refresh rate. The resolution and refresh rates are found under “Display” in TV & Display options.

If you are experiencing a corrupted image, here are your workarounds to reverting back to a safe video mode:

Restart your console and configure your video modes to one of the listed options above.

If you're still experiencing a corrupted image after restart, disable VRR on the TV. Please consult your TV manufactures on how to do this.

If the issue still persist after steps 1 and 2, perform the video mode reset sequence to get back to a safe state and configure for one of the two options above. To do this, follow the steps on this page here under “Your screen is blank after you turn on the console > Reset your display settings”.

EA Play app

Known Issue: The EA Play app will not launch or install on an Xbox Series X|S device.

Workaround: There is no workaround at this time but we are working with our app partners to find potential resolutions for the future. At this time, the app will only work on an Xbox One generation device.

If you are looking for ways to claim your 10-Hour trials for popular games like FIFA 21 or Madden 21 on an Xbox Series X|S device, you can find them in the Store. To do this, go to Store and Search for your game. Select the game desired from the search results and click on the “Free Trial with EA Play” button on the game description page.

If you are looking to play full games included with your EA Play subscription, you can access them in My Games & Apps > Full Library > EA Play.

Game Captures

Known Issue: Some users will see HDR captures appearing too dark when captured on Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S.

Workaround: There is no known workaround but a fix will be coming soon in a future console update.

BBC iPlayer app

Known Issue: The BBC iPlayer app will not launch or install on an Xbox Series X|S device.

Workaround: There is no workaround at this time but we are working with our app partners to resolve this. At this time, the BBC iPlayer app will only work on an Xbox One generation device.

Q: Why isn’t the BBC app available on Xbox Series X|S?

A: Many of your favorite streaming apps like Netflix, Disney+, Spotify, YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, Twitch, Sky, Now TV and more, are on the Store waiting for you when you boot your new Xbox console. There are a small number of apps that are not yet available - like BBC iPlayer – but we are working with partners to add these as soon as possible.

DVD & Blu-ray playback

Known Issue: Some users may insert a DVD or Blu-ray into their console and encounter a black screen.

Workaround: If you are experiencing this, simply remove the disc from the console, restart the console, and then re-insert the disc into the console to watch your disc.

PeacockTV app

Known Issue: Some users will experience occasional pixelated frames while using the PeacockTV app on Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S.

Workaround: There is no known workaround at this time but the proper teams are working on a fix to be included in a future update.

Quick Resume

While Quick Resume is fully operational with thousands of titles, we are aware a select number of Optimized titles may be experiencing issues with this feature. To ensure the best possible experience for our fans, we’ve disabled the feature for these titles and are working as quickly as possible to fix this at the platform level.

Is there anything I should be doing to ensure a smooth transition from Xbox one x to series x on Tuesday or will it all be handled with cloud saves?

It's an absolute piece of piss with cloud saves. MS just does it all in the background for you.

The phone app is used during set-up to copy all your old settings over as well. Apparently its a doddle.

I have done the following...

  • Had a general clean up of installed games
  • Moved all my installed games over to external USB drive (I have a 4TB one plugged in anyway) This way can just plug in the USB to the Series X and all the games will be there saving a lot of additional downloading
  • Checked the space the new one is going etc

Think thats about it.

do we know how prime console works now - or main console whatever it is called.

Do we now have the ability to set a prime Xbox One device AND a Xbox Series device? Or if we set our Xbox series as prime does it switch off the prime on the Xbox One Device?

I am assuming one prime/main console but useful to know.

See my thread in ATF discussing this.

You can only have one console set as your 'home' console.

Other users logging into that home console have access to your subs and library without you being logged in.

You can still login to a 'non home' machine and access your subs and library as usual.

If anybody else logs into your 'non home' machine you will also need to be logged in for them to have access to your library and subs.

I'm pretty sure thats how it works.

great example of the problem of new tech implementation. "But the reflections are real!". Who gives a shit if the implementation is absolute dog shit.

To be fair (not that I have all that much interest in being fair to Ubisoft these days), I imagine that's less of an issue of 'new tech implementation', more 'the resources we had in making these games were focussed somewhat differently with regards handling deep water considering one is set on and around the high seas, the other set in sunny London'.

To be fair I feel that the "wading" in AC games appear to have gone backwards from Black Flag. Playing Odyssey at the moment and its no where near as pronounced as it is in that Black Flag comparison. Maybe its just the over exaggerated animation of Kenway.

What are the streets so empty? Its looks dead. Is that because of the ray tracing?

I'd guess it's because it's an outgoing gen game. Those things can't handle crowds and it's not something that can be scaled up as easily as graphics.

The ray tracing on Xbox Series S was a massive surprise to me, combination of clever techniques like mixing SSR with RT so only things closeby have the RT calculations done and the distance objects fall back to the cube maps plus the lower native res give it a really good bump over the current gen consoles in terms of visuals.

I wouldn't have bothered with Legion is Cyberpunk hadn't been delayed, but I'm having an amusing enough time with it. The missions are pretty basic but your scope to approach them is pleasingly broad.

There's no doubt it's lacking the polish of the more recent AC games though, and even seems to have taken some steps backwards from the previous Watch Dogs titles. I didn't love the original, but two things it had in its favour were the gun combat (which was ironically really good and much better than GTA's) and the driving (which, if I'm not mistaken, had the Driver: San Francisco team working on the handling). Somehow six years and two games later, the combat and the car handling both feel much worse.

Also considering all the resources that are supposedly shared between Ubisoft teams, it's a bit bizarre that there's still such a disparity in the quality of their lighting. All the Watch Dogs games have the exact same ugly, overly harsh and saturated light during the day, but tend to partially make up for it at night and particularly in the rain. By contrast the AC games, running on the same engine, all have pleasingly soft daytime lighting and environmental effects, but less impressive evenings (mostly the period setting I expect, with fewer light sources and reflective surfaces). Legion also has some bad HDR clipping at times, Odyssey never had anything like that and remains one of the only games I've played that actually managed to handle the roll-off in HDR skies well.

They all use different engines for one thing, which probably causes the graphical disparities. I think the AC games use Anvil, Watch Dogs uses something else, Division and various other games such as Mario And Rabbids use Snowdrop.

Ubi games generally have poor hdr though. I hope next gen will see devs being better at this especially with dolby vision for games coming along.

The ray tracing is really technically impressive but way overdone artistically.

What the fuck is this?

Not trying to downplay the RT capabilities of Series S, btw. But Ubisoft's art/lightiing folks should probably have a quiet word with themselves.

It’s what you get when you look for unappealing stills of an effect that’s best when it’s dynamic and in motion, and adding to the world rather than something you’re looking directly at. See also:

- alpha transparency trees in games, where if you look carefully enough you’ll see the billboards

- water spray billboards

- LOD transitions

- etc.
