Xbox Series X | S

Sorry to drag up the boring preorder moan but I thought it was fair to mention this.

So I paid for a preorder of  a Series X at Shopto. I was then told I wouldn't receive one on launch day so asked for a refund of my £449. After chasing them they agreed to refund and have done so- for £400. I've been told my refund issue was dealt with and I need to raise a complaint.

Absolute shit-show.

They are rubbish. I’ve never really understood why people use them over Game Collection or Simply Games. They’re rarely the cheapest these days, their website it a mess and their CS is shocking.

Did you pay by credit card or paypal by any chance? Probably easier to get your money back via those routes than messing with the idiots at ShopTo.

I like ShopTo, but their website is an embarrassment. Why they haven’t sorted it is a question for the ages - they must miss out on so many sales.

Missed this, it doesn’t get ‘dangerously hot’ he pulled it out and was surprised that the hdd was hot - he had hold of it by the metal  part that we know is a heat sink - he then proceeds to keep it in his hand while talking about it so clearly while toasty it wasn’t hot enough to not be able to hold!

I wasn't getting mad at Microsoft don't worry. I was mad at @AlexM stupid ignorant statement.

Thats apart from every other person with one coming out and saying it doesn’t get that hot and is whisper quiet....

Frankly it can shoot of jets of flame at complete random if it's actually silent running. My PS4 sounds like a a Maverick flypast even when idling. It's frankly unbearable to have on.

None of them are perfect to be honest but I've never had any problems with deliveries from Shopto in over a decade now. Their website is still shit but they've seen me good through multiple console launches and I've never had a game go missing or even turn up late so far as I can recall.

Simplygames are bad for price gouging difficult to find items which leaves a bad taste in my mouth and if you preorder more than about a month in advance they take payment before dispatch which is annoying. The Game Collection also have some weird issue when I preorder with them where Monzo hold the pre-authorisation funds for weeks and weeks before releasing them back into my account again which I don't get with Shopto, or basically any other online retailer.

Not sure if this has been posted already....

“Whisper quiet and super fast: a hands-on preview with Xbox Series X“

https://www.theguardian.com/games/2020/oct/07/whisper-quiet-and-super-fast-hands-on-with-a-preview-xbox-series-x-microsoft

Noise

My goodness, it is quiet. It is so, so quiet. While idling, all you get from the console is the barely audible hum of the machine’s single cooling fan. It’s like a very new and expensive fridge. Even during busy, graphically demanding showdowns in Red Dead, Hitman and Assassin’s Creed Origins, it barely raises above a whisper, and of course with the SSD drive, we’re also spared the clunks and whirs of a hard drive. Again, none of these titles are challenging the CPU and graphics processor quite as much as Xbox Series X titles will, so we’ll see if this impressive near silence can be maintained.”

TehStuThe PS4 Pro shipped with a 310W PSU. The idea that heat is going to increase linearly with performance just isn’t true. And that’s just the power rating of the PSU, too. Actual power draw will be considerably lower.

Now, I didn't mention linear. But they've both emphasized cooling this time. Maybe because MS are paranoid about the 360 and are continuing that forward, and Sony are responding to the PS4 being a hair dryer.

I'm not sure my point doesn't stand.

I was specifically talking about the bit about what people are expecting from a 300W device, when we already have consoles in that ball park.

The bit about linearly isn’t your point but the idea that these are “high performance machines” and are therefore going to get hotter than older devices on that basis isn’t necessarily true, or we’ll end up with the PS8 being a molten console and have people rolling their eyes, saying “of course it’s going to burn a hole in your floor and make its way through the earths crust! These are high performance devices! You’re not using the same sort of containment field as you did for the PS7 are you?”

It does feel like a drip-drip-drip of negativity for Sony at the moment. Also, I know it's been said a few times, but that video is the first time I've actually appreciated the size of the PS5. It's quite big.

Huh? Everything I've seen is impressive with that PS5 teardown, this sideways thing from the official Xbox twitter is a petty fail especially as we've not seen any next gen games running on it.

I saw the Xbox tweet first and actually posted it here asking about what it was referring to, as I could see a few furious replies from Sony fanboys, and then what turned out to be people lol'ing about the base needing to be unscrewed and so on. I guess that wasn't indicative of the gaming populace at large.

For balance, the SeriesX does not look good on it's side.

Yeah apart from the sheer size of the PS5 the teardown is positive.

Now what I want to see is some next gen games running on the XSX, I'm ready for the next embargo to be lifted allowing those with the XSX pre release systems to publish their next videos.

OK, I feel like I'm being made to answer a point others are making.

For the avoidance of doubt, my point is that you wouldn't put a PC in a tight AV cabinet. As I said, I've literally sawed the back out of desks to ensure airflow for PC cases beyond the little cable management porthole. And given each generation clearly emphasizes better heat management after the RROD disaster (XB1 had the big fan, One X had the vapor thing, and the XSX has split motherboard with a giant fan on one end drawing air right through the chassis), I'm inclined to treat them like PCs and plan for airflow accordingly.

So, no, I'm not implying the silly scenario you described, and anyone who does clearly doesn't understand how electronics evolve. But my point about helping the consoles, who themselves are concerned about heat management, still stands. As I said before.

Probably the only two applications of AI I'd actually get behind:

- recognizing and categorizing space imagery (craters, galaxy classification, etc.)

- removing all trace of fan boys, of anything, from my internet experience

Come on be fair, the replies under that tweet (and in here), the fanboys are as petty and as incel as each other.

Resulting in similarly desolate places... ;)

Yes, it's bad. I actually wonder if AI is being used to write "PS5 is Better" in reply to Xbox's accounts, I happened to see a tweet as it was posted and that was the first reply.  I looked at the account and it turned out to just be remarkable commitment to the cause, not a bot. I'm sure someone's writing one though.

If only that passion could be channeled into something positive.
