People always seem to forget that you get 10% of the cost (minus VAT) of a digital game back in reward points as well. If you are all digital the points soon rack up.

10%? I just looked up the last purchase I made and I received 209 points from buying Soul Calibur 6 for £12.49.

An even better one would be to allow you to do this as soon as the code’s available for them to upload and then they can just unlock it on release day. Will save all those midnight unlocks followed by hour or so waits before you can play.

Imagine just getting to release day and it’s instantly ready to go.

Looking into it, I think you can. Day One patches as well.

That’s how it works? Unless I’m misreading the above. It preloads in advance and then it unlocks at midnight.

How the hell are you doing this?

The max I can get a day is about 300 tops. And the only options I have are browsing pages and a few quizzes.

You get the 300 points roughly a day from searches and the like. 50 points a day for earning an achievement. The punchcards which give you varying amounts, the game pass quests too. I rarely buy stuff on the store but you get a small rebate fo that too.

I wasn’t paying much attention but it was to do with RDNA vs RDNA2 stuff and a video I watched as I fell into a YouTube well of videos comparing the s to the x - they were mentioning the new Resi game and the devs commenting on it but again I’m just a viewer with no understanding of all that stuff!

PS5/XSX and XSS are all RDNA2.

You're only looking at 1/3 ways to get points. The Microsoft Rewards app and the Gamepass app, both on the console, have more ways to earn points daily.

I haven't bought anything in a while digital as I had a huge backlog. But it looks like they have dramatically reduced the points earned for digital purchases? I had a problem with my points near the beginning of the year. I looked back through the emails I had with the rewards team and I was earning way more than 200 points for a purchase of around £12? Apologies

edit: yeah here is a quote from the rewards team dated January this year...

After thorough investigation, we have verified the purchased you made in Microsoft Store. We confirmed that you received the correct amount (2512 points) as points is based on the price before taxes of your items and multiply by 100 per £1 spent.

The rewards app on console has some big payouts. Today it has a Rocket League quest for 2500 points where you need to essentially buy the new seasons Rocket Pass. I was always going to buy that anyway so thanks very much for the 2500 points. Also another quest giving you 4000 points if you Pre-order Starwars Squadrons, again I was always going to buy it so thanks again!

Huh, I need to pay closer attention to this for stuff I was going to pickup anyway. Cheers.

Fair enough. I’m basing it on my one experience of pre-loading GTA V on PC and then discovering the decryption took three times longer than the download.

That's because it's pc therefore omg hackz0rs. On Xbox there's no decryption, the preload just works immediately once it unlocks.

On Steam I never bother with preloads because I have a really fast internet connection. Simply downloading a game isa matter of minutes while decrypting takes forever. On consoles, preloading is more efficient.

I see from a reminder email that I have a series x in a basket on the Microsoft store, and need to checkout today to keep it.

or, rather, I don’t - because Microsoft’s store went splat. But presumably there’s a load of people in this situation and a bunch of stock might mysteriously appear there today.

Yeah, I just got one of those emails but I don't have one in my basket anymore. Think I emptied it after I bagged one from Amazon so no idea what's going on there.

I may well have one in a basket that I can’t access. It did fall down a lot.

Same here and also the same error message as I originally got when trying to process it on Tuesday. I’m enjoying the novelty of it still being in my basket and Microsoft asking me to complete the purchase.

Unfortunately it doesn't work: a "something went wrong" error of the utterly uninformative variety occurs, which is at least consistent with Tuesday :P

Well, there's clearly no problem pre-ordering an S at the moment. I unwittingly pressed the buy button thinking it would crash, but no...apparently my Paypal settings are such that it doesn't bother to go to the website to confirm it, it just places an order :p

However, I had no desire to purchase, so I've cancelled, but at least people wanting that version shouldn't have much of a problem getting one!

For anyone still thinking about doing the Live to Game Pass £1 deal, I couldn't really afford the full £120 on 3 12 month codes, so I bought two 12 month subscriptions for £40 and one 6 month for £25 and accepted the auto renewal option each time when redeeming the codes, and then turned it off again straight away, and also turned it off after redeeming the last code before converting for £1. I ended up with 4 months free, 3 for the codes and one for the final £1 upgrade.

So that works out at £106 for 34 months, which is £3.12 a month. :)

You did the optimum method anyway, as I don't believe that you can stack more than 3 years worth.

At this rate it won't be long before MS are paying us to subscribe to Game Pass.

Before I plunge on three years of game pass, is this the best / a good deal? Buy three of these and do the steps in the first post....

https://ao.com/product/s4t00026-xbox-one-gaming-accessories-white-68272-292.aspx

(as opposed to all the other 10 million code sites)

I've been looking around and most 12/6/3 month codes are within pennies of one another. Some sites (shop.to) only allowed me to buy one code, so I went elsewhere for others.

There is one trick to getting it even cheaper, but that involves buying brazilian codes and VPNing to redeem them (I think) but that seemed a little to faffy for me and there were some reports of it failing for some people.

Long story short, yes, that will work if you don't want to save 75p or so by shopping around, or maybe more with the risk of wasting your money.

Anyone who failed to get a Series X but tried on Microsofts site, go back and check your basket. They're in for anyone who got the error saying you couldn't buy more than one.

Me and a few friends all got an email this morning saying we have to buy today if we still want them. I logged in and there's a Series X in my basket.

The purchase cannot be completed. Same error message as Tuesday.
