For those looking to extend their Gamepass Ultimate subscriptions, CDKeys are selling 3 month codes for £18.99. I've just bought a couple and extended mine until Feb 2023.

If you let it expire you can get 14 day codes for 1.50 off of eBay

So the stacking up Gamepass thing only works for non current members, right?

I have Gamepass, but it comes to an end in Feb - what are the best value options for people that already have Gamepass?

Huge, thanks in advance :)

I have three Gamepass subs in at home, one for me and one each for my sons. Cheapest way I have found is as follows..

  • Buy 14 day pass off ebay £1.50 ish
  • Once your current pass has expired, activate the 14 day pass and take a gratis month for agreeing to auto renew.
  • Cancel sub during free month.
  • Rinse & repeat.

I make that £13 a year or approximately £1.08 per month.

It's funny, isn't it? They just can't seem to help themselves. I think both will have some plans for their digital only "tenants" a little way down the line. Actually, Sony are just doing it now by saying that you are paying £70 a quid a pop for their premium titles, with no option to shop around.

And for the Spidey remaster at least, no physical version either so it really is "Price on Sony store or nothing" for that one.

Although the ultimate edition is getting physical right?

Tech understanding check please:

I've just ordered a 4k monitor (which I'm not planning to use to play games on):

https://www.lenovo.com/gb/en/accessories-and-monitors/monitors/home/L28u-30C19280DL028inch-MonitorHDMI/p/65FAGAC2UK

It says that is has HDMI 2.0 and 60Hz. My understanding is that this monitor cannot do 4k at 120Hz because it has neither 120Hz nor HDMI 2.1.

So, if I get a series X, I could use it on that monitor at 4k 60Hz but the series S would only do 1440p at 60Hz.

I also have a 144Hz 1080p monitor (which is my gaming monitor), which the series X and series S could both display at 1080p 144Hz?

My question is that I don't see much advantage in getting the X over the S apart from if I wanted to game on the first monitor and then I would see a difference in resolution from 1440p to 4k which I'm not sure I'm too bothered about. Also, how many games do think will initially actually run at 4k 120Hz?

Quite apart from the stupid "too much of an upgrade" comment, I think this illustrates how much of a shift MS' strategy is from what we've all been used to for the past 40 years, and how some people are struggling to get their heads round it.

As console gamers we've been conditioned to buy a completely new box because it plays brand new games that the old one can't, both because they're not written for the old console and because the old console isn't powerful enough or doesn't have the features to support it. Then over the last couple of decades there's been a growing demand/expectation of some degree of back compatibility so we can continue to play our old games on the new box. All very neat and simple.

But Microsoft are deliberately, explicitly blurring the lines between console generations, so that the new boxes aren't completely different from the old ones (but might play some of the old games if you're lucky) but simply incremental iterations of the same platform like phone upgrades. They've stuck with similar (and therefore slightly confusing) names for this reason. X = premium, S = budget. If you own a One X then a Series S isn't really an upgrade at all, you'd effectively be moving sideways from last year's top of the range model to this years entry-level box. It might be worth upgrading to to a Series X but you don't absolutely need to any time soon because your existing box will still play all the new games. You can upgrade whenever you're ready, when you decide your old console is starting to creak a bit and the extra power of the new one is worth the outlay to improve the games you're already playing. It's basically the PC model and it's no surprise whatsoever that it's MS bringing that to the console market. It's why there's so little emphasis on the new games these consoles will play. They'll play the same games, only better (allegedly) (breakfast bag) (wi-fi).

Of course MS aren't going to say "here are our new and improved versions of the console you already own, upgrade in your own time, no rush," because they like money and want to shift as many as possible, as quickly as possible. And of course they want to attract new customers like me, for whom even the budget model is a huge step up. So their marketing guys launch the new range like it's a brand new line, completely different from the previous one. But that's not what the strategy guys are delivering.

But how much impact will that power have on current-gen or cross-gen games? Red Dead Redemption 2 might look better on XB1X. Prior to its full next-gen upgrade, will Cyberpunk be better on XB1X or XSS? Seems like it might be a trade-off in resolution vs other things.

The difference will become obvious once next-gen-only titles are released but could be less clear-cut until then.

Ive seen a few vids on this and potentially the series s could run RDR2 at 1440p 60hz - the general theme across back compat is the same, lower res than an x but potential for 30fps games to run at 60fps!

There was even talk of the series s outperforming the PS5 in certain conditions due to some tech the S uses but PS5 doesn’t?

Is there any discernable difference between 120 and 60? Is it better or just audiophile level silliness?

I feel like our 4k TV most probably doesn't have hdmi 2.1 (can't be certain) so I'm fairly sure 60 will be all I can have.

Stupid question but xbox series x probably doesn't do ultrawide either? My work monitor is 1440p but 144hz so possibly could be good for office gaming (aka allowing the wife to watch TV while I play) but having in a 16:9 letterbox is weird silly.

I'm over thinking it.

I've always found it to be the latter, but some people swear by it.

Maybe you need a young person's healthy eyes. My astigmatism riddled fart eyes won't know what they're missing. 4k might even be lost on me.

The only time I notice the low res on Switch is when I'm doing ring fit and get unusually close to the TV.

I definitely noticed the resolution hit on Hades Switch VS the PC one but it didn't bother me. I'm pretty sure people who claim to see differences between 120 frames and 60 would buy £300 power cable for an amp if they were audiophiles.

Not sure what I did, but I seem to have only been given 2 months additional for my 3 month code.

Something to do with having Game Pass on PC too?

Glad I only bought 1 code to try.

The iPad Pro display is 120hz, and is a sight to behold - a huge difference.

How this scales to a 55" screen though, I'm not sure.

60Hz to 120Hz on my monitor is night and day, honestly. I'd take consistent 60Hz over variable between 60 and 90 say, but consistent 120Hz+ is amazing.
