Where’s the day one new experiences with either of these consoles?

this hype about  demons souls, it’s an old game with possible quality of life changes.  That’s not good enough of a day one purchase.  It’s all old stuff really.

It does feel quite a lot like buying a console at launch will mean not a lot aside from being ready for some next gen games when they're released.

Of course, this is basically because of underwhelming first party support. The third party stuff will be there,  but it remains to be seen how much of it is cross gen and how much of it takes advantage of the hardware.

I think this is two launches in a row where the verdict has been that they're not ready.

Fucking hell, I’m bored of waiting for actual info on these new consoles.

i was really excited six months ago, now I’m not sure I give a shit atall.

Honestly they both showed me enough potential games in their various shows.

Now all I want is "Date", "Price" and I'll decide.

But they're clearly both waiting for each other.

Honestly, the thing I'm most excited about at the moment is the prospect of playing Destiny without six hour long load times. I've saved up for the new consoles so I might as well get at least one, but I don't think I'd be rushing out to buy one otherwise.

To me, the XsX is like buying a new gaming PC, its still all your old stuff , it just works better!

That inconsistent frame rate, gone.

Those load times, cut in half.

The simpleness of just being able to replace your existing box with the new box and carry on, that great!

Yes it doesn't have any "must have exclusives" at launch...well...when i buy a new PC it isn't for that, its to play things better! Thats how i see it.

The Sony machine...ill get that in a few years when it has some of those exclusives...and hopefully a redesign that doesn't look like a child made it...

I was getting really impatient last week, checking Eurogamer expectantly, for some kind of announcement and have pretty much given up now.

Did anyone see the bit in USA today about the controller and that pointless ad they released?

Quote

When players can get their hands on the new console isn't official yet. Sony has not announced a release date – or a price – but the game maker has said it will be out this holiday season.

Had there been no pandemic, Sony likely would have had live events this summer and fall for consumers and the media to get their hands on the PlayStation 5 controller and test games.

"Normally, when we go to market, it’s a big event," Lempel said. "We want to still preserve all of the excitement and make sure we are celebrating this moment for the fans. But the current situation of the world made it harder for us to go to market the way we would like, so there’s a lot of challenges with that."

What a load of nonsense. They’ve got a captive audience hanging off every word, while their recent releases do gangbusters. That boring State of Play got over a million views in just a few days.

Sony are going hard on promoting the new features like haptic feedback and 3D audio, as evidenced by the new trailer. Their problem is that there is no way they can demo these to the public in the current environment. So I don’t think these selling points will come to the forefront until the console is out and reviewers/influencers can rave about it on YouTube. Whether or not these features are a worthwhile upgrade remains to be seen.

So with that in mind, both manufacturers have nothing else to sell but shinies. We’re less than 3 months from probable release and we still haven’t actually seen any real gameplay from any exclusive launch titles as far as I can see. Even without an E3 to present at there is nothing stopping Sony or Microsoft putting out some full gameplay vids of games that are actually coming at launch to whet people’s appetite. At this rate, I feel that when they both come out with a £549-599 price point, I’ll be so non-plussed having seen nothing of note that my excitement levels will be low.

They both really need to get prices out now, and either let that sell the console if it undercuts the opposition (which ever way round it is), or start explaining why we need a £500+ console.

If anyone ever says E3 is getting stale and isn't needed anymore...

Remember these feelings.

Exactly what I've been saying. Regardless of what's best for the companies in question or what's easier for journos, for me as an enthusiast E3 was way better than this spread out nonsense, no matter how bad E3 got. Apart from watching absolutely car crashes, it would give the big two an exact time to aim for and make an impression. We would have gotten the price and date and whatever games they had in one go and have been done with it. Now, there's no hype building up and mere months before launch we don't even know how much money to save up. Even if it was silly, a corny event with forced hype (lack of games due to COVID or no) is far preferable to the current uninteresting zero excitement wet fart non-events from both. Here's two game trailers, tune in next month for another stream in which we reveal nothing again except another two trailers. Please understand.

In a normal year we’d all be moaning about how it’s been months since E3 and nothing interesting has happened and why didn’t either of them have anything planned for the second half of the year.

Would we, though? Microsoft always do something at Gamescom, Sony only stopped doing PSX last year and then it’s an absolute onslaught of games between now and Christmas.

haptic feedback and 3D audio

3d audio will not be the revolution Sony are painting it to be. It could work in Sony’s favour for them to be able to spout nonsense unchallenged by public experience, until they've got the console and branded headphones home.

Haptic feedback, I expect to be similarly underwhelming, but I don’t know exactly what they're saying.

There weren't many "public experience" opportunities for PSVR, either ;) Kidding aside, there are still going to be a bunch of press types previewing the hardware before it launches, so we'll see.

(EDIT: that said, I remember @SweatyTravolta thinking that PSVR would release in an unplayable state because GB didn't set it up correctly, so who knows... ;) )

I'm not sure if that supports or goes against? I think VR is fairly self explanatory and the benefits easily understood. I expect a number of people to say they can't hear the difference when it comes to 3d audio. Sony may have redefined what's possible with a pair of headphones, and I have to say I'd love to see (hear?) that happen, but I expect some will be quite disappointed.

I don't understand why they're marketing haptic feedback as a system selling feature in the new ps5 ad. I mean, I'm sure it'll be cool and all, but it's not like that's going to be the deciding factor for anyone.

are you just saying that because the xbox doesn't have it?

The sensible adult in me says to do this but I'm pretty sure I'll break as soon as there's a sniff of a retailer selling the console for a bit of a discount.

The article says they’ve built in redundancy to increase yields. I don’t know how much it helps but I thought it was interesting.

That's long been SOP for console SoCs, you can't reuse failed ones for a lower tier product normally so any outright failures will have to be dumped. The XSS will have its own SoC, but as the clocks on it are way lower and the chip quite a bit smaller, the yield rate will be better than the XSX anyway.

The PS4s have redundancy, so did the PS3. I assume the previous Xboxes used the same tactic. The PS5 will likely follow the PS4P and go for a 40CU raw design and disable 4 for yield purposes.

As an owner of PSVR, they're still not wrong. That trademarked PSVR shimmer is crippling and some might also say that having to use Move controllers renders it unplayable before it's even been switched on. It's so sad that some of the best experiences are locked to the worst hardware.

I agree with you, in that I think the haptics will be a big nothing. I do a lot of my gaming with headphones plugged into the controller, so I hope that 3D Audio actually works, but I am sceptical at the moment.
