Xbox Series X | S

Back in July Microsoft confirmed that they've discontinued the One X and One SADE, but that the One S would continue to be manufactured. As such I imagine that is indeed a listing for the One S, albeit probably with the newer controller packed in. I think the cost is just the current One S price, though. As in it'll probably go down once the prices for the Series line are unveiled.

Speaking of, one of the takeaways from that Hot Chips 2020 presentation is that the Series X is understandably expensive to make, comparatively more so than the One X which launched at £430; at best Microsoft broke even at that price. Given that they're keeping around a low-end option (One S), and will have a midrange solution (Series S) I can't see them eating a loss on the Series X: I'd definitely set aside £450+ if you're looking to buy.

And then some. The SSD will also be £££ more than the laptop style HDD in the One X.

Sony’s custom everything also isn’t going to be cheap, but perhaps their slower ram and smaller SOC and SSD (though new controller?) will help.

I still think they ditched the oneX because it’s still making a loss, and will continue to do comparative to what they'll make selling the new machines at the “shiny and new” price.

example:

it’s better to lose $50 of $499 than $50 of $399

Just for clarity, I’m not suggesting that the listing is for a new One S Digital; I suspect it’s an old listing that the Walmart employee simply didn’t notice before.

Is the PS5 any more custom than the Series X? The only big customisations I can think of are the fancy storage controller and power management. And it’s not like the Series X doesn’t have its own bespoke data transfer hardware in there.

(Conversely I think the SSD is probably going to cost more than the one in the Series X, even with its slightly smaller size. It sounded like they were using bleeding-edge flash chips.)

Not really, they're both reasonably custom with the possible exception of the Series X SSD (and possibly fans, power supplies?). But then to get costs down over the long term they need to be.

This sounds daft but I’m really curious what the PS5 cooler is going to be like. MS has always used these PC style fans that are a solved problem in terms of reliability and noise, and the Series X design with the one big slow fan on the end is just nice. The PS5’s flat design probably means another PlayStation with a centrifugal fan near the front pushing air out the back but I’m ready to be surprised.

Nah, they are pushing a digital subscription service, not digital purchases.

The argument for budget gamers is subscribe for £8.99 a month to get access to over 200 games.

I completely understand that, but from a marketing perspective, for parents, and the usual "I buy games in GAME / Tesco / Asda / Cash Converters and sell on / trade when I'm done" group, which I'm fairly sure is still a big thing, will need some very clever marketing to get around, especially as they won't be able to play their favourite COD disc in it.

Put another way, having a thing you call a budget solution doesn't necessarily mean it's a budget solution, nor that it'll be accepted by the buying public as one.

They can always buy the full fat PS5 for £600 or whatever. What is "budget" depends on what the competition is.

I'm very interested in this Series S' thingy.  Are the mock ups actually mock ups? or the real design?

I mean... this IS pretty nice even for a mock up

It's a fake. But it'd be nice, wouldn't it?

[It actually has the same dimension disadvantages as a Series X - it's the cross section that makes it too big for many AV setups. Rumour is that you hide a Series S inside a previous devkit casing, so it'd be more normally shaped]

Some unintentional comedy there with them cutting from "WELCOMING" to "the people we meet while playing these games", or talking about "a sick gameplay video" over one of the ugliest parts of the Halo Infinite demo, but being able to export clips and screenshots directly to your phone and use that to post to social media is something that's been sorely needed.

I imagine (hope?) Series S will be a design for those of us whose entertainment centres can't physically accommodate a console that's 6 inches tall on its narrowest dimension.

I hope its just something i can whack into a normal computer monitor and just.....Play the goddamn games.

this new Xbox series X thing is not about 4K films or Netflix to ME. Completely the wrong selling point for a gamer IMO.

4K  Gaming of course, bring it on if its what you need.

I wonder if it’ll be half the width of the Series X, as opposed to half the height? I think it still needs to follow the same design language, so it feels part of the same family.
