Even if that is true (and I think you’re probably being a tad reductive) it doesn’t matter really does it? Because they won’t be required to have that in small print at the bottom of the screen while the Spider-Man from Into the Spiderverse is whipping round all whizzy and shiney on all the tv ads and splashed across billboards etc. In terms of selling a new thing to the general public it’s a big iconic showpiece and Master Chief’s latest was it for Series X.

It's completely true, but you're also completely right. I'm definitely buying it because I love the base game and I'm up for more with fancy PS5 enhancements.. it's just weird when you realize that an expansion is the one big exciting launch exclusive on either platform.

I'm still buying both because I LOVE NEW HARDWARE, but I understand why others would wait. And yeah, Microsoft missing out on Halo means Sony has a huge advantage now.

If Miles Morales is the equivalent of the Lost Legacy it's more than an expansion imo. I think Series X could be in trouble. The PS5 launches with a new spider man and who knows, we may also get Demon Souls or GT7, and the possibility of a next generation patch for the likes of the Last of Us 2. Plus Cyberpunk, arguably the biggest games this year, is multiplatform and the PS5 will get the same improvements as the Series X.

Announcing the release date alongside the delay to the big 'exclusive game' is also a terrible look.

We’ll have to see I guess.

Side note though: it would be quite clever of them to narratively justify him zipping around NYC faster than Peter Parker because of the SSD if in the game they say Miles is a faster webslinger.

So if nobody who currently has Game Pass and an Xbox upgrades to a Series X at launch it wouldn’t matter? That’s surely the vast majority of their Day 1 market. It would be a financial, retail and PR catastrophe.

Didn't CD Project say there would be a next generation patch bringing some improvements to PS5 and Series X this year and then a full blown next gen update in 2021?

Correct. ‘Graphical enhancements’ on day 1 for Series X with full blown next year.

No they didn't.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X are both backwards compatible, meaning you'll be able to play Cyberpunk 2077 on next-gen consoles when they launch, but the "full-blown next-gen version" is coming at a later, unspecified date.

I don't believe they care about the Day 1 market perhaps as they did in the past, it's a gradual growth to a subscription model with incremental hardware boosts along the way. Microsoft have proven it works with Office365, which also didn't launch particularly well but become a monster earner for MS.

Maybe, but they will be wanting to put their best foot forward and have as strong a start as possible. If the launch is a shambles and they lose ground to Sony they’ll be playing catch-up for the rest of the generation as happened during the current generation.

Unfortunately, their best foot was Halo.

Well, a big expansion for a PS4 game with some quick PS5 enhancements bolted on. But yes.

I wouldn’t be surprised if those enhancements were applied to the original game and they sell the whole thing as a package, kind of like The Last of Us Remastered with Left Behind bolted on.

Something else I hadn’t really considered about the effects of this. I imagine MS may have spent a pretty penny on marketing materials for the console launch with Master Chief and Halo imagery plastered on it, that they may now need to hastily scrap and rework.

I mean that’s kind of due to COVID, rumours initially said PS5 was supposed to launch with Ratchet and Clank too, but it got delayed. Bosman indirectly confirmed this   by mentioning Sackboys Big Adventure was a PS4 title moved to PS5 launch so they’d have a family title this year. The Spider-Man expansion is building on a finished game, so doesn’t seem as affected.

Essentially it’s affected both, Sony just had more than one egg in their basket, and backups if things went wrong.

Microsoft seem pretty bad at scheduling things for launch, remember last gen when they were putting out like annualized sequels right up to the end of the 360, and then seemed to realise they'd given their teams no time to work on next-gen tools or upgrades, resulting in major franchises being AWOL for years?

Or just pop a big sticker of Craig over the box branding saying ‘Coming when its done!‘

This seems to suggest it will get a day one patch for PS5 and Series X

Anyone with a PS4 copy will be able to play that on PS5 and receive a free update to improve the game's visuals on Sony's next-gen machine.

The news, confirmed last night in an investor call, follows CD Projekt Red's announcement in February it would support Microsoft's Smart Delivery initiative for Xbox - meaning the free upgrade will work the same there for Xbox One copies on Xbox Series X.

Yeah, assuming "Smart Delivery" on Xbox is the same thing as the upgrade patch on the PS5 (which is what I've assumed so far).

Essentially it’s affected both, Sony just had more than one egg in their basket, and those had contingencies.

It’s affected Nintendo too whose plans we still don’t know, luckily for them they can just put out a Wii U port when times are tough ^_^

That sounds like what I've been assuming and hoping for, that they'll have turned a few basic settings up for the PS5/XsX version. Crowd density, texture quality. Should make a very noticeable difference slings loading times and performance.

Oh god this is it isn’t it? The people at Microsoft are actually stupid enough to go “well it worked for our office software”, and their loyal fans apparently think the same thing.

Yeah, shifting videogames to a SaaS model is stupid.

Might want to tell Netflix how badly it worked for TV and Movies?

I really think so, that's why they've been offering such insane deals to get people onto gamepass so over time it becomes the 'norm', at which point the deals fade away and the price start to rise.

I'm not sure the people at Microsoft are stupid though...we'll have to wait a few years to see if it worked or not!

Netflix has done well with subscriber numbers, but the costs of producing the content to keep those numbers do call into question the long term sustainability of the model.  Given the production costs of all games, but in particular AAA games, I think there are legitimate question marks over the long term viability of the Gamepass model.

That's why Amazon and Disney have stayed well away from subscription services...

This is an outdated take. Netflix is now a profit machine.
