Using sales numbers from 2019 is also perhaps not the most indicative of how successful Sony’s exclusives are since it was the year where they had the lowest number of them and when they were the least successful. Looking at the numbers for 2017, 2018 or this year will tell you a different story.

Ah well,  perhaps I'm wrong.  I just used the first thing that came up.

Well, as I said,  I think you're probably right that the games help to positron a system and to shape the perception. It's part of the marketing. However,  I don't think they're becoming more important as you originally claim.  I think it's unlikely that accounting for all the moving parts we could come up with a simple,  bitesize answer as to why Sony have done so well this gen, but I think you can still trace a good chunk of it back to all the well documented events of this gen's launch. There are too many factors,  the games they put out are part of it,  but I don't think they're becoming more important with time, as you originally posit.

I didn’t use the word ‘more’ but I’m sure sales figures will attest to that anyway. I mean you said that MS is buying up lots of studios so it clearly is important to all platform holders.

Oh sorry, I should refrain from posting as I'm heading to bed. I saw you arguing against "less important" and then processed that as "he's saying they're more important!" Half asleep, apols.

I’ve still played 90% of my time on Xbox Scorpio  as the x plat games looked better , gamepass and my friends from the beginning of Xbox  and all the best exclusives and dare I say the best games on PS4. That lacklustre showing with merely nods to series X has made me think about keeping my Scorpio and getting a PS5 (even though it looks fucking woeful) where at least aI know I’ll be getting pixel bang for my buck and bang for my £1 on Xbox.

This isn’t a bad option, but given I do pretty much all my gaming on Game Pass these days, it makes more sense to me to have the best possible experience for all those games. Having to sit there and deal with loading times with a £400+ PS5 gathers dust, waiting for the next exclusive, seems a bit mad.

I can’t really see myself not buying them both at some point.

My only disappointment is how little there seems to be at launch in terms of the big guns. The highlight is probably the upgrades to current gen stuff, really looking forward to FH4 at 4k60 and Ori at 120Hz. That already drips off the screen so I can only imagine.

I think COVID has put a bigger spanner in the works than people think. I suspect Sony didn’t want to launch with only Spiderman, and had something else for launch that ended up getting pushed back.

Even Cyberpunk’s next gen version isn’t going to be ready for launch. I expect Valhalla and the like will have pretty by the numbers next gen versions too, more like a PS4 Pro patch kind of thing than a full next gen bonanza. Raytracing, apparently the stand out next gen graphics feature, seems to be harder to implement than just pulling a lever - Halo Infiinite isn’t launching with it, Cyberpunk’s initial next gen patch won’t have it, etc. So I doubt games like Valhalla will have it (at least done properly), either.

I've just watched it and I quite liked the show.

The Medium, The Gunk, Psychonauts 2 and Avowed all looked like stuff I'd be all over and a few others I'll try on Gamepass. Everwild looks amazing, but what is it?

I also liked the show and I'll look forward to picking up an XSX at launch. Halo doesn't look to be shaping up particularly well right now but there was plenty there I'm up for, and especially given it's on GP.

As someone who owns a ps4 Pro and xbox one x, there was absolutely zero reason for me to jump in feet first to either new console at launch or really any time soon afterwards. What an absolute shit show from both of them.

Did you feel differently last gen? I wasn’t exactly gagging for Killzone: Shadowfall, but after such a long previous gen, the reasonable launch price and getting a new toy seemed like a good reason to get a PS4 on day one.

Although mid gen Pro models and an apparently higher launch price mitigate some of that, I’d say Miles Morales is a better looking game than Killzone or Knack.

Ps3 to ps4 and 360 to xbone appeared enough of a graphical and power leap to justify it, as well as the promise of new gameplay thanks to the more powerful hardware.

The leap from Pro and one x to what we've seen of ps5 and series x isn't anywhere near as enticing.

Also, Miles Morales could probably look almost as good on the ps4 Pro. Spider-Man looks great on the pro.

Isn't this just launch deja vu that happens with every new system launch and then people get itchy fingers and buy what they want anyway?

The thing is if I pick up a Series X I can get £200 off it thanks to MS Rewards, It's going to be the best console space to play Xbox first party, third party and indies for the next five years and I've got a nice 4K OLED to pair with it so I'll be enjoying games at 60fps, I'm thinking why the hell not?

There's going to be good numbers with multiplayer games thanks to Game Pass and them not cutting off the last gen immediately. Game Pass will allow me to play the vast majority of launch titles at a very small cost.

For me it's a no brainer and a very easy upgrade path.

The highest launch price ever (TBA) and a dearth of new, impressive looking games might be a perfect storm for a no sale. If you've got a One X under your tv,  even more so, perhaps. Personally,  if Halo is launching unfinished,  I might be inclined to wait until they've finished it before picking New hardware up. Mainly because you only get one first time and I'd like it to be the best it can be.

It's starting to make me wonder "what's a good reason to be there day one?" The counter is that I'll get one anyway at some point, definitely before a price drop, so I may as well enjoy my games at the best fidelity even if the system sellers are still on the horizon.  Would I end up playing Halo on the 1X anyway? Less likely if there's no multiplayer.

I assume as officially Lockhart hasn’t been announced we don’t know if it will support 4K or not? I’ve read some articles saying it willl only support 1080p. I’m just hoping Lockhart will be a smaller form factor but keep the Blu-ray drive.

I’ve decided to wait. I’ll be happy to submerge myself in Cyberpunk in my One X come Nov which will keep me ticking over for a good amount of time. Sadly nothing is telling me to buy Series X day 1, nothing shown so far for launch has stood out as a massive leap forward. I’ll definitely be buying one at some point in the future,  that’s not in doubt, but have gone from day 1 to let’s wait a while which is a shame really as I was proper excited about the new console but that excitement has dropped sadly. Hopefully something will crop up down the line which will stand out with the wow factor and then I’ll be more than happy to upgrade.

The concept of Lockhart is that it’s basically the same machine but with far less graphical power. It seems more likely they’ll do that by allowing games that run with the same graphics at 1080p, which is one quarter the resolution, than by making developers built entirely new versions that run at 4K with graphics that are one quarter as complicated. But nothing is confirmed, that’s right.

You're right on that one. Infamous Second Son came out in 2014 but that was pretty much the only really good exclusive for the machine that year. It wasn't until 2015 that we had Bloodborne and more coming out for the machine.

When is Lockhart and a deep dive into Series X going to happen? Preorders have got to open by end of September surely. ‘Optimised for series x’ on some game case stickers is all we’ve got basically, the games showcase didn’t show anything, as in here a game on a machine with frame rate and shinies turned on.

Yeah, that’s true. The PS3 and 360 were rattling along there at the end and the gap with PCs has probably never been bigger than at that time.

I think there’s a PS State of Play rumoured for August 6th and the editor of EG was saying 23rd Aug for the Lockhart reveal.

Do daily Microsoft rewards. I've saved a similar amount this last year or so, but used some of it for credit. I've managed to get Cyberpunk and Tony Hawk's preordered for free in the last month and still have about £60 left. That'll either go towards a Series X or another game.

I'm under the impression that it will play current gen games at 4K just like the OneX. I guess we wait a little longer to find out.

Forgot about Cyberpunk.

AFAIK, they haven't said when the Series X version will be released,  but I don't think it's at the same time as the X1 version.

More fuel for the consoles are releasing too early.
