That’s what everyone said just before the 360 came out. Seems crazy now.

Disagree.

Went to a pre-launch event at the Custard Factory in November 2005. I was really impressed with what I saw. Especially Project Gotham Racing 3! With the 360 it wasn't just the games though the whole system felt fresh and new from achievement points, live and the OS itself. The Series X just feels like a PC upgrade which can be expected I guess.

I don't think Sony are particularly worried right now.

I think with Game Pass around they should be TBH as well as MS building an ecosystem and xCloud etc.

Xbox isn't always going to be about the hardware. It's a platforn for gaming as a service. This is what will be the killer blow at some point. Not yet.... But in time. Sony need to get their backside into gear IMHO.

They don't need too. TLOU2 is breaking sales records. GoT is selling so well there's shortages. As long as they keep making exclusives people want to play they don't need a game pass service, same with Nintendo.

Can't deny the value proposition though and it's got a lot of gamers back on side, Ms needed a win like that.

Exactly. And....they haven't.

They're probably sitting back and waiting to see if it's sustainable. Looking at their first party sales figures I don't imagine they're in any rush to transform PSNow into a real Game Pass competitor. I'd wager if it turns out the X Series is drastically outselling the PS5 early on they'll announce a Game Pass style service quick sharp if they figure that's the reason.

I think the moral of the story from this long, shite, Geoff-Keighley-fever-dream of a summer, is that the next-gen consoles are still a few years too early.

Don't tell Geoff though, he'll try and drag his "fest" out until they are ready.

Agree. Arguably MS were getting desperate to get people on their platform. Time will tell I guess however lots of people have bought into Gamepass so I expect from a subscription target point of view things are taking shape. I know lots of people that have bought three years worth of Gold for example to get GamePass Ultimate for little cost. Of course they have spent probably around £90 upfront to do this. Which is a nice chunk of money for MS considering nobody knows what they will deliver over the next three years :) and of course they have bought into the ecosystem for three years too. They are not stupid and this was no way an oversight on MSs part. Great way of getting numbers.

Come the end of the year I can buy a PS5 and then pay £60 for a copy of Bugsnax to play on it, or a Series X with a Gamepass sub.

I'm not sure. I don't think there was any game MS could possibly have announced or showcased today that would have worried Sony. The speculation over the last week or so that MS might be looking at getting rid of Xbox Live Gold and making multiplayer free is a different matter.

From both games showcases, so far the only game that’s really done the business in terms of next gen visuals is Horizon 2.

Granted I’ve only seen any of this this through the lens of Twitch HD-quality video.

So everyone here complaining it didn't look next gen watched a 1080p stream ?

Just lets get that out the way first.

By a lot of surprises I didn't the mean the 2022 line up.

Remember the longer a game takes to make the better it will be, isn't that the Delaystation mantra ?

Watched it in 4K60fps on youtube.

Looked pretty nice to my old eyes.

I suspected Forza was still long away as they only showed a running demo internally last November.

Halo impressed from the first BUDDA BUDDA in the old Dobly headphones.

Looked well shiny and had plenty of alien shooting, weapon swapping and explosions.

I had a big smile on my face at the end of that.

Looks like most came in scowling and left spitting piss.

Aaron Greenberg did an interview with Keighley in his post show and spoke a bit about it. I only caught a bit of it, but I think he said it’s next year.

I haven't watched it yet, going to watch the 4k. Is there any swearing? Unsure if my kids can watch.

I didn't catch any. There's only one trailer that's a bit scary (the medium). Skip past that (it's the one with "two worlds" on one screen.

Skip past medium and state of Decay 3. State of Decay is the second trailer after halo iirc, not sure where medium appears. The rest is probably fine.

So it's weird. I've got 3 years of Ultimate Game Pass now and I'm good with that - my some plays on his XBone with all his mates (they all have them, though not all have GP) and I have a digital unit downstairs to play stuff on too. But I got it as a second console - my go to is the PS4.

And I've got all these included games, apparently, if I get a Series X from day 1. And they just announced a shit load of launch exclusives. And there's all the backward compatibility. And I just don't care.

There's something fundamentally unexciting about "hey we're building an ecosystem and all this value for you and here's this cool new console with games you can play somewhere else".

Yet I'm actually excited about holding off on TloU and GoT and playing them on a PS5. And don't are doing that cool shit on PS5 that looks like it could have amazing experiences I can only get on that platform.

I'm genuinely surprised. A few hundred quid on a spangly new console where I get a pile of free games should be a no-brainer. Instead it feels like a mobile phone upgrade.

Twenty hours gameplay with a spiderman sequel, or a load of games and live for six months including halo, the latest destiny expansion, a top quality arcade racer at 4K/60, a real time strategy game, a load of weird indie games etc. And your friends can play coop with you using your old Xbox controller.
The price comparison is daunting if you put it like that. It’ll be really interesting to see what prices these things come out of the gate at.
