Buying a brand like that is buying the IP. No deal on the IP? It's just some offices and employees who could all jump ship. No sale.

The problem is you're buying the IP for some set period of time (then what), and in places (lego) the relevant brand isn't actually owned by Warner to licence out.

I disagree with the first part - it feels like a python-esque version of England as an RPG - hardly "generic".

Actually I disagree with the whole thing... depth in mechanics?  Can we not have rpg-lite games? so they all have to have deep rich (boring) systems... From Fable I just want a simple system where I get more powerful with BIGGER spells that do more damage. Fable 2 was the perfect RPG-lite system to me.

I thought it was a pretty boring set of regional accents. Not particularly Python-esque, beyond that. The humour wasn’t anywhere in the same ballpark.

And no, I don’t think it needs to be anything near as deep as other RPGs - and I don’t think first parties are interested in making something like that. They want something accessible. But I thought what they did was barely an RPG and can be improved upon.

Then the valuation reflects that. It's just numbers,  people don't have affection for "WB Games" certainly not in the same way as they do for Batman or Lego or whatever. If you can't use those licenses,  then that affects the valuation.

I can see that point of view - but I politely disagree. :D

I would imagine that should WB Games be bought up they'd cease to be "WB Games", and would have to license any WB licenses from Warner themselves.

that would not make them a particularly attractive prospect - what does that leave you with? Mortal Kombat and Scribblenauts and you can make some WB licensed stuff for a short while?

Microsoft might buy WB gaming but I don't see them buying the Batman ip.

It's a very convenient narrative,  Sony have Spiderman,  now Xbox has It's superhero.

Really, they should be making their own IP.  Games featuring Larry Hryb, and his boy genius assistant Graham may not have the same ring but they'd fly onto the shelves.

They already have their Batman/Spider-Man equivalent though: Blinx. Bring back the beloved Time Detective!

Indeed, although I suppose they really could be determined to get a single exclusive Batman game to go up against Spidey.

I don't think that's Phil Spencer's management style, for that kind of money they could probably establish a whole studio and develop new ip, which seems to be the plan.

I wonder what would happen if Sony bought up WB to get to Batman? Playstation - the home of superheroes, could be a killer blow. I wonder if those concerns factor in when making decisions.

I enjoyed Fable 1&2, but the world is incredibly generic and there’s very little depth to the RPG mechanics. If they really must use the franchise, I really hope they change it completely.

Given it's an entirely different developer and a decade later it feels likely they'll pull nothing but the most high level stuff from the old one and Playground certainly know how to build a world.

That’s the kind of move I think they should be aiming for to get people really excited. If this showcase just ends up being more Forza/Halo/Gears with a couple of new IP’s thrown in then they’re gonna get called out quickly.

Batman becoming an Xbox exclusive character would be a massive win for them.

That's a good point, hype and excitement is important.

I'm confused with the Spiderman thing, Sony don't own the character but have paid Disney/Marvel for a licence to use that character in a videogame. Presumably other platform holders could release their own Spiderman games (or games featuring Spiderman in them) with no issue?

It would surely be the same for Batman, unless MS bought WB/DC completely.

I assumed the Spidey exclusivity came as part of Sony Pictures' Spidey deal. I think Marvel actually license the character from Sony to use in the MCU movies.
