Same for me. I suppose MS don't really care about which machine I use my Game Pass sub on, only that I eventually re-subscribe (in 2023 lol), but it does mean I'm a bit more likely to go with the PS5 in the first year.

I imagine the vision is to have people who don't even want Xbox hardware, or perhaps consoles in general, to get Game Pass and get on xCloud. If you've got the bandwidth, just grab a pad and your tablet. Edit - or your Apple TV, etc.

I tried Xcloud the other day with my new phone, a One pad and clip. It was fantastic, so good that I played Forza 7 for close to two hours that way. Now I know it may be down to what particular cellular and wifi hardware/settings config I was using but I'd tried it several months ago on the same setup bar my new phone and it wasn't very good. I think they are continually improving the service and It's pretty shit hot round at my house atm.

My internet isn't good and it isn't bad, pretty average but the experience was rock solid.

I'm a convert to the fact gaming can be fun via the cloud.*

*Although it would never supplant local play  being my main way to game, but in certain situations it's ace.

Why get the Ps5 in the first year though?   What big hitters are we going to see?

Seems the smart thing to do would be to wait for something a lot smaller and (probably, maybe) a second hardware revision like we got with the PS4.

Depending on what level of shinies we get with xcloud I might end up waiting another year for both consoles.

What I really want now is for Sony to combine PS+ and PSNow.  Anything else and it's going to look a bit of a shabby offering.  Truly then just streaming it all on the PC would be the way to go for convenience.  What a world!

PSnow already combines downloadable and streamable games. They just don’t have the kind of catalogue there Microsoft has and honestly haven’t communicated that it’s more than a streaming service. (Even I forget and I’ve used the darn thing.)

Rolling PSplus and PSnow to make a rival to Game Pass Ultimate would be sensible on paper but there’s so little demand for PSnow that I can’t see the point. They’ve got to make the game selection better.

It will be interesting to see if they can get Apple to bend their bizarre App Store rules which are currently preventing them from bringing xCloud to iOS properly.

The fact that the fuckers aren't allowing GEForce has made me think I might have to move off Apple at some point.

I reckon as time goes on they'll introduce more PS4 first party games to PSNow.   Just a shame it's separate subscriptions and a fair bit more expensive than GamePass given the VPN tricks you can do with MS subscriptions.

Does this mean that XGP Ultimate is now effectively a Stadia killer? You don’t even need a console now?

It depends on what your expectations of game streaming are. Stadia has a console'less living room solution and 4k, hdr, 5.1.

xcloud still doesn't have an obvious console'less option for the living room, but I expect older Xbox hardware to be opened up to allow streaming which I think would be a good option. It also only currently has 720p stereo so is really positioned as a "stream to your mobile device" offering rather than a console replacement. But I imagine MS are hard at work on fixing these and making game streaming their latest and greatest without dedicated hardware an option. It's exciting.

Here’s a question that I don’t think any of us actually know the answer to yet but I’m intrigued nonetheless.

My son has an Xbox One S with XGP Ultimate. Do we think that means that I will be able to stream something like Halo Infinite, at Series X graphics settings and loading speeds (accepting a lower resolution most likely) to my computer/TV?

If so then I am all in on PS5! :D

As far as I know that is the ultimate goal of X-Cloud. It's currently powered using Xbox One S hardware but they certainly intend for it to be outputting at Series X/S levels eventually.

theories:

the Xbox One S, is capable of being produced at a low-cost, playing discs (which is why they're getting shot of the XBOSAD) , and streaming XCloud gaming.

the Xbox One X is being discontinued because they can't get the BOP down, to position it correctly in the market place*, and is  replaced by the Series S.

3 SKU, 3 price points:

Xbox One S £200

Xbox Series S £400

Xbox Series X £600

any better ideas?

* they were selling it to enthusiasts, and could weather the losses on each one sold, but if that ramps up...

Is there a list of expected xCloud compatible devices hanging around anywhere? Or is that complete speculation at this point?

I know the iOS stuff is hamstrung by the policies on the App Store, but I'd be really be interested in a Mac OS client? I'd love the option to be able to stream some GP games during my lunch breaks, etc.. to my MacBook Pro when in the office (especially because for actual gaming direct on Mac OS is awful).

Should’ve called them Xbox 720p, Xbox 1080p and Xbox 4K in hindsight.

I bet even the Series X is going to be £450 or less. Series S no more than £350. £400 and £300 isn’t out of the question, MS have been learning how to engineer boxes with these high spec coolers for years with One X and I bet they’ve worked out production kinks nobody has even thought of.

It feels like that blog post is telling me to buy a PS5 this Christmas if I can only afford a single next-gen console.

Yes I can imagine that is the first thing to cross the mind on reading that
