Goddam, I have picked up so many new abilties today. That and I realised I could upgrade too.   Previously dark dungeons now accessbile and the end of the dark dungeon with the lighting changing as a dor opens.  Brilliant.  Just had my first fight with the garden knight.  Got stomped on.  Levelling up and will give him a shot tomorrow.

All played via the Cloud

I'm not going to watch the speed run as I'm within reach of the ending now. Considering how the game is designed around having the knowledge to effectively sequence break a bunch of stuff, I'm not really surprised that it's down to that time already.

Spoiler

I do wonder if they ever pick up a sword, though - I know there's a dupe in the Western Belltower area that you can use the holy cross to acquire, but I'd imagine the optimum thing is to rush to the mountain by any means necessary with zero combat and punch in the Golden Path code.

Anyway, six puzzles left on the checklist, so some chat about that too:

Spoiler

The only one left that's in English is the first Eastern Forest fairy - I've already done the code for the broken gold monolith. I have a feeling on how to access it, but I'll have to work on it later.

I have a bad feeling about the others - I know one is the rotating music box requiring the bomb to access, and another is likely the chimes, but I haven't a clue how to solve them. The fairy spell is also pulling me back into the invisible path room near the graveyard, but I'm pretty certain I've already got both the chest and the fairy from there. It wouldn't surprise me if it's the only place with double rewards, though.

I'd say yes. There's no dialog or aggressive text. Lots of fighting but only in the classic Zelda sense of swing a sword.

Unless you men's for your four year old to play it. Then no. It's hard. Even with no fail on to have any idea what to do

I'd say yes, but a very young child might find some parts scary or upsetting to watch. The game isn't going to blindside you with mature content, though.

Probably the 'worst' parts are:

Spoiler

There are a couple of sections where you have to navigate very dark areas with only a small light source. One of them is full of spiders.

Later on you encounter enemies that are essentially pathetic, zombified versions of the main character. I could see that being unwelcome if a kid just wanted to watch the “cute fox game”.

And I'm done with the main game.

All but one thin done without aid and I'm not sure I'd ever have done that one. After getting the message there was no way i was deciphering the language.

Missing a few achievements so might just use a guide to polish them off for 1000 points.

Just got the hookshot equivalent, still absolutely loving this.

Still not used assists either, the Siege Engine caused me a bit of a headache but once I figured the tactic out it dropped after a few more attempts.

I'm toying whether to just go full invincible mode for the remainder of the game. I did use it for the last two key bosses, swapping back to normal in the questing bits in between, but the ghost land is a pain in the ass with reduced health and whatnot.

Left the boss fight for now. Just bagged the last hidden soul. Now need 6 additional secrets still. Think I’ve just figured the Golden Path out though. Proper chills up my spine moment! Absolutely fucking amazing!!!

Edit - What! The! Actual! Fuck! Just done the last bit of the Golden Path.”YOU WHAT MATE”!?!?!? Absolutely fucking mindblowing!!! Proper genius!!! Game has made me feel like I’m going a bit wrong and uncovering some kind of insane conspiracy. 😂 Been taking notes, photos, and got sheets of paper with mad drawings and scribbling all over them, that look like the workings of a total maniac! 🤣

I just did this myself, with accompanying paper everywhere! Love how it's in plain sight all along!

There are a coupe of bits still to go though - missing at least one coin and ability card, and also....

Spoiler

Want to know 'who' the first page refers to.

Also the black star referred to on one of the last pages is clearly the section on the first page, bur it looks like it needs to be submerged somehow for 60 seconds? I tried that with the booklet open but nothing happened. Any hints?

For your last bit... this is probably the hardest thing in the game. You are on the right lines

Here are three little helpers maybe.

Spoiler

There's a specific place to go

Spoiler

There is also a specific page to look at

Spoiler

And the shhhh is important

Finally...

Spoiler

The message you reveal is in the cryptic language. You must learn to translate this to solve the message.

So I gave up and looked it up. I understand it now but my god not sure I'd have got it and it's so much harder than anything else.

Thanks - I appreciate the mini tips. I'm going to try out few things before reading the last one!

I should say the last one isn't the solution specifically. Rather a reason why even once you solve the bit (which I think is worth doing) you might get stuck/frustrated again 😂

Gah! So worked out the first bit but now...?!

How are you cypher and language skills 😂

Again not the full solution just the steps...

Spoiler

1. Learn how to translate the manual's non-English text (there's a key on one of the pages but it has to be decoded)

2. Translate the message you got to appear.

3. Interpret the message to produce some inputs

I didn't do any of the above. I just looked it up at the point you've got to because life is too short. And weirdly even the last step isn't as simple as you'd expect after all the faff.

It's a puzzle like no other in the game. I sort of like that it exists but it's a little out of place, particularly with an achievement hidden behind it. I think it should have been something other than a secret treasure. Some opening to maybe some extra backstory or in-world developer's concept art for the game (like prehistoric cave art telling the making of the game or something).

I finished this tonight. Loved it, most of all because of its echoes of The Witness and Outer Wilds with their freedom to engage directly with the experience without the mediation of dissonant "this is how the game works" instruction. Comparisons to Dark Souls are not that useful - they share a few mechanics and elements but they the reasons for their greatness is quite different imo, and this probably shows how increasingly redundant the "Soulslike" genre descriptor has become. Some of the combat and boss design in particular lacks tightness and fairness, but not to the extent that it dampens the overall mood and thematic content of the game as a whole. I found it interesting how finding your way through Tunic very much relies on already understanding some of the key grammar of games, but then also deliberately subverted or commented on this in various ways.

I've not played a 2D Zelda all the way through except Minish Cap. Should I go back and play them if I enjoyed this? Or are they more about the combat and puzzling than the narrative and themes?

I was enjoying this game up until the cathedral and dealing with it! So I turned on no fail to get past the mini boss rushes, did the hero stuff and on again for the final boss. Had no chance otherwise. And this end section has left slightly soured experience.

I've finished with 5 pages of the manual missing. So I'm going to need walkthrough to complete I imagine. Is there much reward Vs time/effort to pursue this?

Note that with 5 manual pages missing you've not seen the "real" ending of the game. I don't say that to sound uppity or anything, just that there's a different end with the complete manual.

Once you've done that there are still a range of secrets that can be solved for extra stuff to find to 100% the game.

I'd say that if you just use a guide to "finish" everything from this point then it's not worth it. After the core story to the real ending the game is all about the puzzles. Working out what you can and should do next.

A guide for the last couple of secrets (fairies and/or treasures), and one in particular, or if very stuck with where to go to find something.

For me when I restored myself I basically had all but one page I think (or got to that point very soon after restoring myself). So my primary goal was finishing the manual. Then I collected all but one of the secrets. And finally for the final secret I looked it up as I knew what to do but wouldn't invest that much time (if I'd even have got it right).

Finished this earlier (as in 100%). I have to admit to using a guide for the last few fairies, collectibles and the door on the mountain.

I also did the getting the gun before the sword achievement which requires a new game but can be done in matter of minutes (and really highlights how open the game is once you know where the shortcuts are).

Brilliant little game and defintely a GOTY contender for me.

So my attention has turned to this after having almost completely rinsed Elden Ring, and I'm totally in love.

I have just rung the West Belltower.

Spoiler

OMG the Dark Tomb bit!  How the game teases you in that you can go into the tomb, but not progress due to the lack of light!  Then you get the lantern!  Proper genius.  And then, the way the game nudges you to the manual, where you can only see your icon on the 'map' in the manual can't you?!  And the little 'hand-written' clues in the manual too!

Cor yeah this is special.  I fell for the game when I saw its first trailer during an Xbox E3 Showcase, and I'm so glad the game is living up to expectations thus far.
