They look similar but play very differently. This is more Souls and death's door more Hades in my opinion. I enjoyed both of them but this seems simultaneously more frustrating and more rewarding.

This is pretty much Zelda Link’s Awakening on the Switch, only with the Dark Souls upgrade/combat mechanic, combined with the mystery, discovery and secrets of Fez......all wrapped up in the feel of a classic retro game of the 80’s/90’s.

Basically, anyone that can remember getting a fresh game manual out of the box, giving it a quick “new manual sniff” before reading through it in anticipation of firing the game up will more than likely love this!

Man, this is one of the most Gamesmastery games ever!

Nerdy Kid - “Gamesmaster, in the Forest Zone, how do I get to the hidden Dark Dimension”?

Gamesmaster - “Ah, the hidden Dark Dimension! Start by finding the save point in the ruins. Stand to one side of it, and destroy the craftily placed statue. Now, push forwards on the stick and you will find a hidden corridor leading to a secret area. From this area, if you hold the A and B buttons together, whilst standing beside the Altar, you will be transported to the legendary Dark Dimension”!

Its absolutely loaded with stuff like that. Really, giving me the same feelings I used to get when first playing adventure games on the BBC and C-64. Dropped Elden Ring to play this and Shredders. 😯

Actually, you've now made me think of Little Big Adventure and how elements of this remind me of that. Maybe its just the viewpoint but whatever.

This is just getting better and better. Did a section where everything came together and some stuff was revealed, plus I figured other stuff out, and it was absolutely amazing. Starting to think this is better than Elden Ring. Its pure classic video gamey brilliance. Nintendo level of polish and quality to it. The manual is one of the best ideas in years and years. Surprised how few people seem to be playing this. It’s quality.

Also, the graphics! ❤️❤️❤️ The audio and synth based soundtrack are great too.

This is a bit of a masterpiece! The best adventure game released in years. It does a better job than BOTW and Elden Ring  put together, of giving you a magical sense of wonder and mystery. The kind of wonder and mystery that’s been missing from games for years and years. It’s like they’ve been able to bottle the feeling you got when playing your first adventure game as a kid and have just poured it into every area and nook and cranny of this.

The little details in it are fantastic too.....from the little Fox trotting and bouncing along when he runs, to the way hitting certain stuff plays in tune with the music. Just done the Ziggurat and fuck me the graphical design and the audio......awesome! Now just wandering around, no idea what to do next, but spotting stuff and thinking to myself.....”how the fuck do I get that?”........”that’s got to be a secret entrance”........”HA! A hidden corridor.......that must get me to that chest I couldn’t reach earlier”.........”how do you get past that area”........”wonder what that thing I found in that cave does”?!?! Absolutely fantastic game!

I love how everything is hidden in plain sight, too, only to be revealed by the manual.

Last night I found out about what to do with the black monolithic pillars, so I ended up doing some backtracking to clear the ones I've missed. The same missing page gave a big hint regarding the quarry, so I guess I'll be heading back!

Spoiler

I also used the prayer action on the gold plates. Tried it on the first one you see in the game, and now I have a contents page! So now I'm trying to remember which ones are available to see if there's any pickups I'm missing.

I hope this is on sale soon, so I can double dip for the Steam version for another go-around with the knowledge you get throughout the game. I do wonder if it will allow sequence breaking down the road..

Is this hard?

I love the look of it. I don't mind exploring or hidden stuff. Being stuck about where to go doesn't bother me.

But I cannot be f'd with much of a challenge in terms of combat. My ideal wouldn't be far off a god mode in which there are enemies that you have to work out how to kill but you cannot actually fail. I don't expect that but am I going to spend a bunch of time dying to stuff? If so I know I'll just quit after 2 or 3 deaths to anything.

It is hard, especially later in the game but it also has a No Stamina mode which lets you roll and block to you heart's content and also a total No Fail mode so you just don't die.

Just enable both the accessibility options mentioned and you'll love it.

I'm loving the soundtrack. It is giving me real Secret of Mana vibes at times.

I had come in here to moan about the difficulty, completely forgetting about No Fail mode. Back to that bastard Siege Engine boss!

I'm not quite done with the game, but I have traversed the GP. That one was a classic example of being stumped for a while until I loaded up the game again the next day and suddenly things clicked into place.

At this point I think I'm going to start looking stuff up, as there's a couple of secrets I haven't uncovered that I don't even know where to start looking for. It felt like I'd scoured each area thoroughly but they're dense with hidden routes, some of which you don't even know to look for your first time through.

It feels like not that many people on here are playing this yet. Or perhaps, like me, they're just reticent to talk about it. Whatever the case, I think this will be high in a lot of people's GOTY lists this year once they've seen all it has to offer.

No fail mode is the greatest thing.

Loving exploring and not giving a single fuck about enemies. Got the sword and first bell rung. So many little nooks to discover.

I'm resisting using that mode. I'm in an ok place at the moment without, but there were a couple of points where I was getting very pissy with it.  I'm not sure it's a better experience with those frustrations or not.

It's just bad timing. Elden Ring is still sucking a lot of the air out of the room when it comes to gaming discussion. I think most people are still working their way through it and don't really want to start another quite obtuse and difficult game in the middle of it. I suspect this thread would have been a lot more active if it released in another month or so.

I expect it's the type of game a lot of people will discover throughout the year with it being on Gamepass and all.

I made a fantastic accidental discovery last night after traipsing round lost for a while.

Spoiler

I found a secret route behind a cliff expecting to find a chest or something. Instead I found a whole other area to explore which netted me the fire wand and the first key (red) after beating the big sentinel boss.

What amazes me is the fact that the area I found this secret route in is accessible near the start of the game, although enemy types would have made it hard to progress further at that early point.

With the Sentinel boss, after dying time and again, I finally gave in and switched off Stamina loss and then beat the boss immediately. Rolling and evading really is the OP factor in this game. Not sure whether to switch Stamina loss back on until the next boss/spike so as not to become too complacent.

I switched stamina off at the same point and it had the same impact. I've no qualms about not turning it back on again.

I hit a difficulty spike yesterday so (temporarily) switched on no fail mode. Really good to have the choice to move on, rather than bang your head against a brick wall.

I'm stumped if anyone who has finished this can give me a pointer?

Spoiler

I rang two bell towers so far. I have the hookshot style item, the fireball firing weapon and have found and used the first red key. But now I seem to only be able to go to the graveyard area, which I can't activate properly yet so nothing works in there like save spots etc.

I think maybe the quarry is next? But it seems like a huge jump in difficulty. Oh and I have found that tall tower with the boss on the roof, but he wasted me with a couple of hits. Cheers

The quarry is next, you can't do the Swamp until you have all three keys.

I think I turned on no fail mode for the Librarian (top of the tall building).

Soundtrack reminds me most of Fez. It’s fantastic. The Graveyard and the Ziggurat pieces of music are especially good.

If you get stumped at any point thoroughly check the manual. There are tons of clues hidden in it. Same goes for the difficulty, the manual hints at stuff - items and how to use them etc that make the game easier, when you understand how to use them properly.

This is better than Elden Ring. Probably the best adventure game I’ve played since OOT. I’m now at the point where I’m solving some of the big secrets. The ones I’ve solved so far gave me goosebumps and put a huge grin on my face. It’s the kind of stuff that used to be in games but got lost due to watering everything down and making it easier for the mainstream. The way stuff is handled through the manual is genius. Miyamoto level stuff!

Also, this is possibly the best looking game I’ve ever played. It’s absolutely stunning!

What makes me think most is when I appear through a passage from somewhere into a location I already know. Did I miss the route when I was here before or was it not there/open when I passed before? Yes they're hidden but I'm pretty good at sliding along every surface now*. I suspect a little of both but I'd love there to be no tricks, just extremely good design.

* Which I'm not sure is a good thing. It encourages a strange way of playing which sometimes means I forget to just let the game carry me around. I think Fez is an apt comparison in some ways. It had a similar exploration vibe but in that I let the game flow. I wasn't looking for hidden passages but knew the puzzles would probably reveal themselves over time.

it does have Fez vibes, however that was totally obscure in a lot of its puzzles. This isn’t. There are no tricks. Just study the manual. It’s all there! Talking about the manual.......love the way that when you’re looking at it, behind it is an old CRT or handheld screen with a 8bit/16bit version of the game on it, like you’re sat in the dark back in the day playing through a classic. Just one of the many, many amazing little touches.

I’m 22hrs in and I can safely say.......this is an absolute masterclass in game design. 10/10. Its up there with the all time greats for me. One of the best adventure games ever made and one of the best and most enjoyable games I’ve ever played. It’s transported me right back to being about 7yrs old and playing adventure games on the BBC at school or at home on my Master System.

Just figured out some of the fairy stuff. Quality! Going to bag every secret on this and get all the achievements.

Edit - Think I’ve just made another couple of big discoveries. One is audio related. Mind’s been blown again! What! A! Game!

Yeah but then some of those later game reveals that link back to earlier areas are just.

Well duh how you dare me make look so thick 😂
