Yeah, I could see Sony swooping in to make this part of its China Hero Project.

That's for smaller devs and start ups, really. It doesn't mean Sony won't still look to snap it up, but this already has big money backers and there's the fact that Sony already published a Sun Wukong game just last year.

I imagine the biggest hurdle with this finding a western audience will be the localisation, which is where most Chinese games have stumbled. Game Science have been hoovering up talent from outsourcing devs for a good while, though.

I still think that creating a big local audience in China that would pay and support AAA game development is key to having more titles like this given how embedded it is in mobile games.  I hear that it's got Bytedance's backing so hopefully it'll be well supported to the end and they can ship a good game.  If they have a good game with these kind of visuals, cracking the western market shouldn't be that hard if they get a partner like Sony or a big publisher, the Journey to the West isn't obscure.  The art direction is spot on and the reveal with 15mins of gameplay is better than pretty much all 'next-gen' showings so far.

I love these concept arts

Yeah, it's largely an eSports and mobile market here, but there's a growing and hungry audience for the big console-style AAA stuff. Ghosts of Tsushima seems to be doing big numbers on the import scene right now and I expect that Avengers game will do well, for better or worse. Eventually people will want things with those kind of production values, but geared more towards their own domestic tastes.

I expect this is partly where this has come from, plus Journey West being fairly censor-proof.

Looks amazing.  It's hardly a Soulslike, is it? Looks more like a God of War adventurey type thing with lots of combat.

Some of those enemy designs looks so great.

A proper Monkey game omgomgomgomg <3

I'd say it looks like an unusual mix of souls and dynasty warriors. Could be good.

Yeah I guess, I just get hung up on things being called Souls like when they don't really look like Souls other than third person melee combat!

It's just me being a dick :D

The only thing that felt weird about watching that video to me was the speed of everything, trying to read / watch enemy attacks seemed very tricky. Guy barely took any damage though so I think we're more in for a  breezy cinematic adventure rather than a gruelling slog.

Loved him stashing weapons in his ears, and the megaman style stealing weapons / moves etc!

Very exciting. Definitely more so than Mortal bloody Shell!

One came out not that long ago on PS4, also from a Chinese developer, based off a Chinese CG animated film. I played it and it was shit.

This looks great though, love the character designs.

I don't think it's going to be there easy. The person playing clearly knew the attack patterns of the bosses (when to move out of the way, when to parry, how long you can safely attack for etc), so I think until you reach that level of experience, it could be tough going.

Oh for sure! But I meant when he did get hit, he didn't seem to lose much of the meter that I guess was hp at the bottom corner.

This is looking immense so far. The effects and animation quality in combat are fantastic, combat looks really solid for something deemed pre alpha, and if I'm not mistaken, until the location/enemy montage at the end, it didn't have any camera cuts, much like God of War (which they've claimed as an influence along with Sekiro)
