Norris Maguireter, you mean? Bit complex for a footballer's nickname, Gottersy.

Gotters is already the nickname, taken from Gottron. Which itself was taken from the medical condition Gottron Papules, which was the name we gave to a a childhood seal puppet my son loved 20y ago.

Luke Shaw claimed the official told United’s captain, Harry Maguire, that he chose not to award a penalty because he was worried about the post-match reaction.

:lol:sure he did Luke:blink:

Maguire now saying the ref didn’t say what Shaw said he did. Oh dear.

How many penalties have united been given since Klopps penalty ‘meltdown’?

And I can see many a club website pumping out images of controversial Utd decisions prior to their games following Oles rant.

Football isn’t  just sport, the soap opera around it is always great value.

Did any United player even appeal for a penalty when it happened, I only saw Chelsea players appeal for the handball against the United player. Luckily these things even themselves out over the season don’t they.

Im not sure if the ball for Liverpool’s goal was further over the line than the non goal Spurs scored against Man U back on the day :o

 mate you’re gonna have to do better than that!

Nah, probably just the FA not caring that a fairly high profile player has made a pretty massive claim against one of their referees after a match on live TV. I'm sure you know how much the FA doesn't care about stuff like that!

It's very odd.  Isn't there audio between the VAR and the ref, which is presumably recorded? I wonder if that had any bearing on this decision, or if there's been some kind of relaxation of the rules regarding bringing the game into disrepute.  They do say they reviewed "available footage," which would suggest they've checked Luke Shaw's claims in some way.

It could be that Stuart Atwell is in some trouble right now. He wouldn't be the first referee to be influenced by outside pressures. They're human beings.  Mark Clattenberg recently said that when he was refereeing in the Premier League he thinks some of his decisions were subconsciously affected by him being terrified of Sir Alex Ferguson!  I'm in favour of that though, of course.

That's lovely.

At some point in the last five years or so (or maybe more, I am getting old and time's concertina-ing like a motherfucker), the top flight in Finland after four matches had every one of its twelve teams perfectly ordered from 12 points down to 1. It was linked from The Guardian's Knowledge section at the time, but I'm damned if I can find that or any capture from the time.

Edit: found it! It was in 2015, and not exactly as I remembered it. I'm a programmer - off-by-one errors are expected.

I’m far too young to remember him as a player but I think a lot of this forum grew up on Saint and Greavsie in the 80s. Saint always seemed like a bloody good bloke.  RIP.

This. Seeing this news just took me down a lovely half-hour Wikipedia rabbit hole from Saint & Greavsie through The Big Match, the ITV Sport Channel, Fantasy Football League and the wonderful Aztec theme tune. Some powerful nostalgia hits going on there, for sure.
