Rewatching the hattrick, the pace, power and accuracy of Mbappe’s finishing is delightfully devastating. Closest striker to Ronaldo since Il Fenomeno retired. Just hope Mbappe has more luck with injuries because he’s a joy to watch.

Anyway, Fulham keep up their remarkable record (31 games without winning at Turf Moor).  Sounded a fair 1-1 draw.  Dyche subbed a sub in Robbie Brady, who came on for an injured Gudmundsson in the first half, himself got subbed off for Josh Brownhill.  He's stalling on a contract renewal and did himself no favours.

 

Oh, more anti-football from the Clarets.  Ball starts 18 yards inside the Burnley half and two touches later it's on the Fulham penalty spot for Barnes to score.

I watch football as a form of entertainment. Not doubting you enjoy them staying in the premier league every year or anything. Just saying they looked bloody awful tonight.

I've been there and it was terrifying.

 

1998. I have never been happier to get on a coach in my life and see Burnley disappear. Leaving the away end was an experience I'll never forget. I was sat right at the back with my mate and we were both in agreement that this was a bad decision. 

Our 'fans' were morons but it felt like the entire population of Burnley wanted to kill us.

This is the worst trouble I've witnessed at an away game and I didn't go away again for years.

Premier league is in the middle of its 3y contract domestically when usually they'd put up the next set of 3y packages but looking like they'll delay this amongst worries of falling TV revenue for other leagues recently.

 

If the transfer market and tv revenue starts to recede it's going to impact a lot of big clubs who have signed players on contracts and instalment payments that will extend past the current tv deal.

I wonder if after a season and a half (or so) of 99% of games being on TV, there will be a move towards the option for virtual season tickets in the next distribution of rights.

Or maybe the option to PPV games will return once crowds do. Imagine it will be less glaring if turnstiles are turning again. Want to watch a game but can’t get a ticket? Watch for £15 or whatever clubs/broadcasters decide is the desired revenue to make their split make sense.

This would lead to a notable increase in gap between the 'big clubs' and the rest of us, imagine the extra revenue for the top 6 teams in any game versus the £7.50 each Palace and Burnley would split for their fixture.

 

Better product (perceived or actual) = more money is true for any market, but football feels like enough of an uneven playing field already, and the bigger picture of the overall long term sustainability of the entirety of football on England has to be considered.

There was a big piece I think I posted here from the Athletic a while ago about the pandoras box of making all games PPV, and whether the PL would consider going it alone cutting out the TV companies - they are reticent as don't have the infrastructure to do this but the feeling was the rewards could dwarf the current tv deals, but it opens up the other issue that the revenue raised would be very concentrated to certain clubs and the collective bargaining thing feels even tougher to achieve if that is the case.

 

I suspect for the next contract they'll do what they did last time round, sell more games at a lower cost per match to give the appearance that the headline figure is up.

 

PPV landed very badly last time, not sure the UK is ready for that on a match by match basis, but suspect many of us would sign up for club season tickets.

Yeah I think I would opt for a virtual ticket, albeit on the proviso that I have an option to turn off the commentary if Tyler, Neville or Carragher are anywhere near the commentary box.

But agree the imbalances don’t make that a fair way to broadcast, unless there are minimum guarantees for each club. And there is no planet on which Liverpool or Man United, the biggest likely benefactors of a virtual season ticket system, would sign away a margin of potential profits to a collective pool.

I'm against PPV as I think it'll just give another advantage to the biggest clubs, Leeds and Villa, and make it harder for everyone else to compete.

And however you do it you create a divide somewhere.

 

Like you could do a deal with the FPL, sell all 4 divisions to someone with the proviso that a) They have to screen all games live and b) Every club gets the same.

 

You'd then mean no-one will ever get promoted from non-league again.

Oh yeah, I definitely don’t advocate the PPV approach, and even a virtual season ticket comes with similar problems, unless it’s run by a broadcaster and clubs all get an equal share of revenue, which of course wouldn’t happen.
 

Intrigued to see how broadcasters approach the next deal, and whether there is any disruption to pre-Covid set-up.
