Warhammer 40K: Darktide - Xbox/Steam

Seems weird that there's no traffic in here given the amount of Warhammer 40k nerds on the forum...

Darktide is basically Fat Shark's move from the Warhammer Vermintide universe to the 40k one. Essentially similar in terms of gameplay, but with new classes, more emphasis on guns etc.

I'm not a Warhammer fan really, even less a 40k fan (I prefer the fantasy stuff, personally), but Vermintide and Vermintide 2 were both great fun, and this looks alright, too.

Oh and it's been delayed until 30th November.

Classes are:

The Zealot – An inquisitorial acolyte type with a bowl cut, a power hammer, and a scroll down their front

The Veteran – An Imperial Guard stormtrooper with a gas mask and lasgun

The Ogryn – toting a massive slug gun and a cutlass

The Psyker – A hooded, warp-powered psyker, who needs no equipment – their mind is a weapon.

Unlike Vermintide, you're free to create your own character from scratch. Whether this means the game won't have the great voicework and dialogue/banter seen in Vermintide remains to be seen.

The Vermintide games were fun and I really enjoyed the characters a lot (Saltzpyre being a particular favorite) but they're doing away with the voices for this one I think, and that makes me care a bit less. Also trying to get in the mood for co-op stuff/get other people in the mood for co-op stuff is increasingly difficult.

This, basically. My friends had a bit of a co-op renaissance during lockdown, but now it’s incredibly hard. People say things like “yeah, Darktide looks good!”, but the only answer is really “okay, but what night of the week are we going to commit to playing it?”

Because if we don’t what will happen is that we’ll play it once, then there will be a 3 week gap as a rotating group of people are busy, then a month later we’ll all get together and sit down to play only for one person to reveal they’ve been mainlining it for weeks, are level 392, will assure us that it doesn’t make much difference, only for them to basically hard carry the group because we’re playing at a lower difficulty.

They will either exhaustively explain everything and kill the joy of exploration for others, or make constant, small noises of passive-aggressive frustration when mistakes are made.

Everyone else gets bored after 3/4 a level, we finish early and never boot it up again

This is why I’m not fussed about Darktide and will be sticking to Risk of Rain 2 for the rest of my life.

Accurate.

I'm looking forward to it but the above will be my experience of it.

Yep, sounds about right. However, I recently started playing Vermintide 2 for the first time and just doing quick matches and it's pretty fun. It match makes you with other newer people as you can only do difficulties tied to your hero power level, so it's rare to find anyone who's super geared or experienced.

Also I would say that those trailers I posted do nothing to sell the game - it just looks like a frantic mess on double speed with none of the charm of Vermintide but, according to people who got to play it at Gamescom, it's actually much more similar to Vermintide in terms of speed and style and characterisation which is somewhat comforting, dawi.

Ok so good news! In the video below one of the devs says that during character creation you select backstory bits (where you’re from, why you’re in prison) that then dictate what personality and voice over your character gets in combat to keep that character driven stuff like in Vermintide, only with your own character this time.

And the story is being written by Dan Abnett, who is apparently a prolific 40k writer (any fans would probably know him, I’m guessing?)

I’ve been listening to the first Gaunt’s Ghosts and it’s pretty hard going. Not sure if it’s the narrator or what but it’s not capturing me yet.

In other news, my 3080 arrived and installed so this game is gonna look sweeeeeet.

Try and stick it out until at least Necropolis (book 3), if you don’t like that one then the series isn’t for you.

Well, if you're going to ignore my recommendation then that's on you. :P
