Raspberry Pi Arcade recommendations

This is up and running on a Pi4 with an installation of Virtualman's arcade only build. 

 

@Goemon if there specific games you'd like me to try let me know. I don't how to turn on diagnostic or anything, but I can film it or put effort in and figure that out!

 

Also, monitor arrived today! Woohoo!

Ooh yeah, totally forgot to post here about it sorry!

 

So, I got a piece of perspex cut for the screen, and then used black mounting card behind it to make it look proper. And it does! No expense spared except all the money.

 

I also got a piece of perspex for the marquee, and put a vinyl across it, with some lights behind it. Also in there are some speakers, with an amp fitted in the back.

 

I did some rewiring to get the plug sockets in the cab, and a single switch on the back with a kettle plug.

 

Then I realised I had nowhere to put it. So, I got in touch with Rich again and got him to make a custom pedestal for it. I think he now sells those.

 

It's all gone together well. I didn't wrap all of the pedestal because of cost, just painted it black.

 

If I were to do it again, I'd got for a finished black MDF finish rather than all the prep I did. I could have saved on vinyl and it would have cut down on build time. 

 

It's all brilliant though, loved doing it, love playing on it. It is, however, no longer in the kitchen (but could easily be brought back down due to the bartop).

I'm now in the process of ripping out the pi and setting up an old Dell Optiplex (i5 4590 3.3Ghz) with integrated graphics in it. I'll be ripping out all the components and mounting them in the bartop somehow.

 

I'm still at the "Set the PC up with the build" stage before doing that - but the cool thing is Virtualman has done a PC build. The front end's aren't amazing (actually downright shit with some themes) but it's a well supported suite. I did get the Retro Arcade 2 build working and it is nice, but it's also slow to load and doesn't yet have VMan's 2830(!) arcade games built out for it.

I started making a bartop based around a 17” 4:3 monitor and a pi 4. I have to do the (wood) cutting and spray painting outside and unfortunately it’s rained for about a week solidly as well as the crazy strong wind that has uprooted numerous trees locally. So I’m behind schedule 😩

Not sure if this is the correct place, but I picked up a Barcade 2nd hand yesterday. I'm pretty sure it has a Pi inside it because the storage says 27gb free which makes me think it has an SD card in it.

 

I want to remove the SD card to 1) back it up and 2) replace with a bigger card to add more games. Also one of the games I need to play (Rainbow Islands) doesn't work so I want to at least, replace the ROM.

It looks like there are some security screws on the back of the machine which are screws with an indented square head i.e. they look like you could insert a square alun key into them.

My question is, does anyone know what these are called? Are they just square headed bits?

A bit hard to see but the "head" inside is square

Typically used on pocket hole fixings (which that looks like). You need something like this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Kreg-DDS-3-Inch-Square-Systems/dp/B000BKBYWW. I can't be 100% sure on the size but you need the length as you can't always fit a driver or screwdriver at the right angle to remove it.

I got about 80/90% through this and stopped because of my brain. It works but is unfinished, however I’m gonna try get it done by the end of January. My original plan was to have everything housed in an arcade stick box so it could be used as a bartop or plugged into a tv but I reckon I’ll just do a wooden control panel now, add a switch for the light up buttons, some graphics on the sides, a volume knob probably on the back - I need to decide how to do this yet though and the edging.
