Yellowstone - Kevin Costner western series

My wife and I have been working through this on Paramount+, midway through season three now and we both love it.  I often bounce off shows where none of the character have any real redeeming qualities, but this has us hooked.  The cast is fantastic, Kelly Reilly especially in a season two episode when something really dramatic happens in her office.  Oh, and I loved her in the following episode when she helps Monica out in a store.

I hope Paramount add series four soon.

As we didn't have a separate thread for 1883... it looks like 1923 will be coming out December 18th on Paramount+ (at least in the US).

After 1883 I have pretty high hopes for this second related series. I only recent found out that it has a pretty impressive cast list - Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren, James Badge Dale (The Pacific), Sebastian Roché (Odyssey 5), Robert Patrick (Terminator 2), Jerome Flynn (Game of Thrones), Jennifer Ehle (The Looming Tower), Timothy Dalton (Toy Story 3)

8 episodes in this first season, with a second planned.

I tried the first 3 episodes of this and it’s not for me. It seemed a bit bland and dour and targeted at a red state demographic. I really liked Hell and High Water, I love a modern western, and was hoping for something as enjoyable as Justified packed with character actors. There were a couple of good action sequences, but the Dallas style machinations and the dislikable (but not in a fun way) characters left me cold.

This is the most popular show out there at the moment, so maybe once the plot lines have their hooks into you it’s addictive, but the first three were too much of a slog for me to find out.

I love me some Kevin Costner but this one goes straight in the tin cup.

My plan is to skip Yellowstone and go straight to 1883. It stands alone, from what I understand, is a far smaller commitment, and has more consistent reviews. Might want to consider that, if you've already ruled out YS but want something in the genre. (Presumably, you already have, but make sure you watch The English too.)

I watched S1 of Yellowstone a couple of months ago. It can feel a little contrived sometimes (the episode with the bear for instance) but it's very enjoyable. I've not watched any of the other seasons yet (mostly because I'm overloaded with so much other stuff to try to watch), but want to say that the title sequence is one of the best I've seen - amazingly atmospheric and I never skipped it.

We watched 1883 as a stand alone show, and didn’t feel like we’d missed out by not not having seen Yellowstone. I can’t say enough great things about it.

Oh maybe. My wife’s tolerance for cowboy shows, briefly raised by The English may have been ruined by Yellowstone.

I thought The English was superb, the best thing on iPlayer in a long while.

I’m at a loss as to why this isn’t getting more love. Maybe it’s the very traditional and somewhat dated American ideals that set the foundation but as a character driven show it’s as good as any I’ve ever watched. Me and the wife finished season 2 last night after a 7 episode marathon and it was absolutely brilliant. So many stand out moments and just really satisfying to watch on so many levels.

Ive always had a soft spot for Cole Hauser going all the way back to his turn in Pitch Black and he doesn’t disappoint here. The soundtrack aswell is always perfect. Season 3 likely to be started this evening and then delighted to see the related shows that are available.

It’s unbelievably good. I’m up to date with it, having started just before Christmas, and it’s rare for me to watch a show that quickly.

It’s really got to me in places for very personal reasons, especially Rip’s relationship with John. The finale of season 2 was just fucking beautiful. I’ll never be a cowboy. I’ll probably never ride a horse. But I hope every day I can be at least a little bit like Rip :)

It's a Bloke-Opera, which is fine if that is what you want out of a TV series I suppose. Taylor Sheridan's film scripts were more interesting.

That’s doing it a disservice though as my wife loves it. The way it’s shot, how beautiful it looks almost all of the time and the respect paid to the way of life and the animals is something I think gets completely overlooked.

At times it touches on how completely fucked the world is and how that way of life, the murder and politics free side of it at least, is slowly but surely being made extinct. If I could I would happily go live on a ranch or in the hills North of me in Scotland because the peace that comes with it looks life changing.

I get that the core of the show is essentially a big overplayed melodrama  but to label it as that alone doesn’t seem fair.

I'd not worry about watching 1923 at the same time as Yellowstone. They are very much companion pieces. To me Yellowstone is much more of a soap opera compared to the two miniseries.

I've only just realised they've made season 5 longer than the usual ten episodes, but done the annoying split it into two halves with a significant break thing.

Started 1883 last night and we all love it. Will finish it then go on to Yellowstone, then 1923.

No reason for the order but as 1883 is only one season and is complete, thought we'd start there.

Well there is possibly more. "A spinoff series, 1883: The Bass Reeves Story, was also announced in May 2022"

Just watched the second episode of S1. Strong "Sopranos in the west" vibes, really liking it.

That's how I described it to my brother and he is now obsessed with it. It's not quite as dark as Soprano's, or as interested in the psyche of what it takes to run an empire like this, but its every bit as engaging and at times very funny and even emotional.

Rip is comfortably in my top 5 best TV characters of all time, which is illustrious company alongside the likes of The Expanse's Amos and Spartacus Gannicus :) there is never a wasted line from him. Fucking Cole Hauser man 🥰

The wife and I hit the end of season 3 on Saturday and are taking a break for a few days because we cant imagine a world where there is no new Yellowstone to watch. I dont want to get to that world.
