Fall Guys

I did, and enjoyed a week or so with it.

I enjoy the races and counter to what I said there is actually variety in the race levels now. Some have different obstacles that change, although some only in Squads mode. The volley ball thing (similar to the old football) is good fun. But I hate all the grab and hold something games or fruit counting things.

But:

  • Two years on and still almost every game ends with Hex-a-gone. It doesn't help that I'm shit at it but it's not a game I enjoy and the lack of variety there grates.

  • The constant challenges and the battle pass levelling doesn't really appeal as a motivator.

But most of all I've never found the game to be quite as riotously good fun as I feel like it's meant to be. After a few games I stop laughing at the things that break against you or your own stupid mistakes.

I have also been enjoying it on PC, I thought I was doing great consistently getting into the final round, then I saw an online news article saying the Battle Pass is accidentally set up so that people get proportionally more points for playtime than sticking it out, meaning a bunch just lose in the first round deliberately.

I got my first Switch-based solo win yesterday, after a very good (and pretty lucky!) run on Fall Mountain. I've been so close in the final a number of times recently, was great to finally get a W. I had won a couple of times on the PS4 back in launch week but only got back into the game again very recently. It's been a lot of fun to play Fall Guys with my girlfriend since it went free to play - me on the Switch and her on the Xbox. I'd definitely recommend going online multiplayer in the same room if you have a Switch as well as a home console. Shame there's no split-screen, though. The new consoles could handle it.

The current Xtreme Solo Show variant is absolutely amazing - X variants where if you fall you are out - no respawns!

It completely changes the dynamics as the slow and steady player will do far better. Seeing most of the field go out on See Saw is very funny!

Just had the first joint victory I’ve ever seen on solo, although the game didn’t ‘say’ that, so who knows if it’s ever happened before without me knowing. It was on Fall Mountain, where my partner and I were both playing online and grabbed the crown at the same time. On the Xbox it gave her the win, on the Switch it gave me the win!

FINALLY got the Infallible Trophy (win 5 games in a row) thanks to the current 'Clan of Yeetus' event.

If you get good at launching yourself via the big hammers you can get through the three rounds of each game pretty reliably.

If the original price is true, that’s genuinely disgusting. £23.36???!!! Predatory as fuck.

The economy of this game is outright disgusting. All of us that have been playing for years keeping the game going during the leaner months have had our crowns converted to an all but useless currency and now everything costs a bomb basically forcing you into spending real money.

It shouldn’t matter to a man in

his 30’s but the way the old store worked was perfect and it really feels like they could have added bought currency into that and still made a tidy profit from a FTP game. Part of the fun was “oh I’ve won a crown! I wonder what I can buy with it!?” That’s now totally gone, you just win XP that takes you through a predetermined battle pass.

They got greedy and ruined the economy completely for people who don’t want to spend a shit load of real money, essentially. And took the sheen off winning in a game in which winning can be fairly rare/special.

It's a shame that Epic buying them out changed the economy so fundamentally. I get why because without going f2p the game would have died a miserable death, but the removal of crowns as currency and the absolutely bullshit paltry garbage you get in the kudos shops really does grate.

It's not stopping me play the game, mind. I finally managed to jettison the FOMO every game with a battle pass brings so I'm just playing it for fun. It's still depressing to see knowing how it was before.

I don't disagree that it's got the wrong balance now but I wonder how sustainable the old "pay up front" model really is for a game like this. There needs to be a middle ground where a) the wins mean something and b) even the monied parts of the store aren't stupidly priced given they're just some costumes.

We are expecting developers to keep building new levels and cosmetics for months and years after release. How long is that expected? Do they stop and turn off the servers when the money from initial sales dries up?

It's a bit like the pension system in the end. We purchases of new players fund the development and maintenance of the system. So if they dry up then there's no money to keep the game going for the possibly large existing player base.

Having said that we see things like No Man's Sky getting huge updates years and years after release. So clearly it's possible to keep pulling in new players to fund that.

I think there’s a middle ground between a one off payment in 2020 and what we have now. It’s more them fundamentally changing the game so that winning doesn’t get you fun shit any more that’s frustrating. And all those wins I’d been banking up and saving over two years of play being converted to useless currency.

I don’t know… it just feels like one of the greedier f2p games out there. I’d have happily chucked some money at the devs if it had felt fair but it’s miles off that at the moment.
