Nuclear war has erupted between the US and Russia. 6 astronauts are on the International Space Station when it kicks off. The Russian and US astronauts are instructed to take control of the station from the others by any means necessary. Sounds like something that could easily end badly for all concerned.

Feels a bit grotty. The ISS is a symbol of human co-operation. Unless that's the twist. But even so. You would hope astronauts are literally and figuratively, above it.

Genuine question - how many astronauts have non-military backgrounds, these days? Mission specialists?

Perfect fertile ground for excellent human drama. Ever seen Bridge on the River Kwai or JSA or Enemy Mine?

Oh agreed.

But at a cost of an important symbol.

It would be like making a movie about two nationalities trying to take over the Red Cross during a war.

Dramatic, but undermining an important institution.

But if that’s the final point the film is trying to make - then could work.

it has space to work they just need to go high, not free fall into some lower common denominator thriller nonsense.

Sounds like a good premise if they take the nuclear war aspect out. Not sure anyone would give a shit who was in control of the ISS if the whole planet was being ravaged by a nuclear winter. Set it during a USA/Russia stand off and make it Crimson Tide In Spaaaaaaaace.

Based on the director’s track record - a Frank Grillo straight-to-streaming with a 66 meta, and a writer with bugger all track record bar making TV ads, I’m not holding my breath this will be a classic. But there’s always hope.
