At 33yrs old I have joined the PC master race.

I've been thinking of upgrading my 3-year-old PC to make it more capable. The processor is an i7-7700 so that's probably still decent enough. The GTX 1060 is finally becoming not good enough for the future, even though I'm still only at 1080p.

The trouble is, I'd be aiming for something like a 2070 which is £350-£500... and if one of the new consoles is £500 I'll think, "Well that's an ENTIRE system for the price of one PC graphics card" and I'll just end up sticking to consoles for another generation.

To parrot the constant advice of this thread and the computer advice forum (that I didn’t follow because it’s boring):

wait a few months for the new cards to come out and see what happens. You’ll almost certainly be able to get more bang for the same money or pay less to get enough bang for now.

Yep. Upgrading to a 2070 now, Super variant or no, when you're on a 1060 is a bad bet.

I'd even be looking at the 5700XT if I wanted something right, right now, but to be honest I tried that going from a 1070 and it was a bit of a waste of money (until it broke, and then I got my money back).

The 5700 and XT are lovely cards and will serve people well for a good, good while but anyone who is thinking of updating now would be well versed in getting a card capable of DLSS. A 5700XT will match a 2070 no problem but as we move forward the 2070 is (hopefully, as long as devs embrace DLSS, and I'm thinking they will, big time) the more future proof card. Any of the 20XX cards are.

Like I say, this is dev dependent but it's such an incredible technology and devs love new and exciting tech. I would definitely say wait a few months for anyone on the cusp of updating but I'd also say anyone who has bought an Nvidia card with Tensor cores is going to game at a great spec well into next gen.

I genuinely don't think DLSS will future-proof the 20XX cards that much, if I'm honest. Once ray-tracing really ramps up on PC, and with the increased specs next-gen stuff will cause if you want those multi-platform games running at 60fps+, I think you'll find them struggling quite a bit.

Nah, a 2060 may lag behind a Series X (it'll still game brilliantly mind) but a 2070 Super will surpass/match it in a multi platform game with DLSS, deffo. It's by the by atm though as we are yet to see what image reconstruction tech MS, Sony and AMD have but Nvidia is right on the cutting edge, with a ridiculous amount of grunt set aside on chip for the task, I doubt their solution has been bettered, yet.

to be honest, the stuff we have seen from those ps5 demos, is not actually that impressive in terms of RT in comparison to what we already have, in fact, the stuff in BF5 looks better than what was shown!

But, they will NEED something like dlss for the consoles, as it just gives such a performance improvement while looking...the same!

With a caveat, in 5-7 years, a 2080ti wont match the consoles, because, the devs will have learnt to code for them to eak out performance, just as we have seen this gen.

I've been playing Death Stranding and the fact that in a lot of cases the image is served up better with DLSS enabled is fucking mind blowing. Literally insane. I can run it it at 4K native at 60fps but I actually prefer the image with DLSS enabled.

Fucking witchcraft.

I've been enjoying Need for Speed Heat, very much a boy racer Forza Horizon.

Is HDR generally broken on PC? NFS Heat wouldn't display at all without it being disabled, and I haven't had much luck making the already great image quality look any better on the likes of Doom Eternal or Metro Exodus... I've disabled it via display settings for now as I would often exit a game back to a washed out desktop

If the game has it included you can usually have it enabled as good as their console brethren. I see a lot of people call out PC HDR but if it's enabled by the devs then it's usually as good an implementation as console.

The trouble comes from whether it's system activated or within game. So try and enable it via the system menu in W10 if you don't see an option within the game itself as this will then unlock the option in game.

It's a ballache but it if it's encoded in the game then it will work, just some do it from a game menu side or a via the system side screen options menu.

All PC Game Pass games seem to need it enabled via the system screen options, MS trying to push that as the de facto I'd presume. I turn it off after I've played said game as it isn't well implemented across Windows 10 as a whole. Games look sound if encoded though.

Oh, sure, a 2070 Super at the moment will easily match the Series X, but most SX games will be 30fps, and PC gamers... well, we don't really like that kind of thing. Add in the additional effects that PC ports of games will inevitably provide, and DLSS can only take you so far.

While Control is a lovely looking game and all that, especially with all the ray-tracing stuff, it's still designed with current-gen consoles in mind, and still demands a hell of a PC spec for literally everything switched on - even with DLSS.

So I don't think it's unusual to say that, given how dramatically better the next-gen machines will be, that current cards aren't going to be as future-proof as, say, cards around the release of the PS4 were.

Remember, the PS4/Bone were really middling hardware even for the time.

There's too much that we don't know about the capabilities of the ray tracing aspect to the consoles for sure. Also far too little about how the new fancy SSD solutions the consoles have might actually affect PC versions of games too. I've never had the same issue that many do with loading screens and all that sort of thing but if games are going to have specific gameplay tying in with the instant loading we are hearing about from the PS5 especially then that's going to start getting very interesting indeed.

But DLSS is making them more future proof than cards from the PS4/Xbox One launch. Of course PC gamers will always want to far surpass what's occurring on console, it's always the way. I can already be comfortable in matching 90% of releases over the next gen but that hasn't stopped me having a 3090Ti war chest.

I think DLSS is going to be a game changer and help anyone with a capable card game at, or close to, next gen upper levels. Like I say though, this isn't the de rigueur for high level PC gaming and some will want to fly way above console spec. Myself included.

Anyone with a Tensor core GPU is going to game great for several years, yeah games will require a GPU update if you want that PC gamer edge over the coming generation but 20XX cards are going to age like fine wine, imo.

...or their "might" be a bunch of people sticking 2080ti's in the trading folder in a couple months... (absolutely wont be me...at all...deffo...)

Or because they'll have launched an Xbox Series X X.

My new card works!

I was a little nervous as it was the top of my budget but my concerns despite checking everything I possibly could online and checking specs in manuals etc were:

1. The card would be too big (I’m sure it is actually a tad longer than the measurements listed but it fits)

2. The HP motherboard in my ex-business machine would be nerfed in some way with hilarious consequences

3. The power supply I got last year wouldn’t work with it for some reason despite having 2 PCIe connectors on it

Just had a very pleasant time on Firewatch at 60fps

Thanks to @Treble again since it was his threads last year about extreme budget retro machines that got me to buy a PC again for the first time in probably 15 years :)

The benefit of PC gaming is choice. Do you want to game at 60fps, well as long as your card is half decent you can. Do you want to increase image quality, same again, it's up to you. Some people say they just want to game without faff and that's fair enough but I do very little faffing with PC games and plenty of playing. Love the choice.

If a game is capable then 60+ frames is always preferable. Or image quality is king. Up to you.

Choice.

Nah, that's the fallacy. A lot of PC chat centers on the upper end but so many GFX cards about will enable a superb gaming experience. You can game wonderfully for low prices, easy.

It can just get swamped by next gen busting, wallet killing chat. PC gaming runs the absolute gamut of price ranges for boss experiences.

Not me, my 2080ti will be my backup card, and I can then retire my old Titan X from that position.

How long can I realistically expect this to last before needing to upgrade?

Bear in mind I am happy at 1080 and will be happy to haves settings lowered a little if need be. Just want to make sure games run into the next gen. What should be my upgrade path?
