Dead Space 3 just went from 26 frames to 424

And @Meh Primal went up to an average of 111 :D

Which does tell you how surprisingly good built in graphics are these days.

But also how important cards are :P

One question- is there an easy way to migrate my steam library from my old pc to my new one without redownloading everything, or losing my saves at least?

Providing the old drive is in the new computer, yes! Install Steam as you would on the new computer, and there's an option somewhere in the settings for 'Steam libraries' or something.

You point it at your original Steam/Steamapps folder, and then it figures out what you've got and adds it as a playable game to your library again :) after that, you can move any game between the two locations, and choose where to install games too.

As for saves, most will be backed up on Steam Cloud, but if they're not you can probably move them from where they are originally kept.

Thank you, I was hoping it was as simple as that. Yes my library is currently on a external drive

that'll be it.  Waiting for Death Stranding to download - 60 odd gb!

I wanted to try out Halo Reach as I've never really played it but it's downloading the entire collection at 77 GIG. Won't be playing that until tomorrow.

High five to the new PC owners.

I am totally addicted to Anno 1800. I have finally figured out how to use the production stats menu to make sure my economy is positive and villagers are happy. (on my 5th island and maybe 25hours in..)

DLSS2.0 with more than twice the FPS and BETTER IMAGE QUALITY THAN NATIVE?

Mad shit.

And of course if you have an external drive you can move those games to that drive before you change PC and then move them "back" with 3rd party utils.

Or in my case, have them all backed up to a NAS anyway.

Am I missing something here, because you can use Steam to move games to different drives and it's incredibly easy and painless?

Yeah, it's fairly easy these days. A while back it used to be an absolute ball-ache, but they updated the process.

You're not I am, it used to not be a thing you could do in the client back when I actually wanted to do it.

You can decide your Library Folders in the main Settings panel under the Downloads option.

For individual games that are already in your library:

Open Steam > Right click on the game in your Library > Properties > Local Files > Move Install Folder

At some point I'm going to have to ask the Pc dudes to tell me what I need to do next to optimise and monitor my PC. I don't even know how to check fps, temperature etc.

I have switched it on, downloaded all of these game clients and played 2 games so far.

Funny enough I started Halo CE this week.  Last time I played it was on the original Xbox and clocked it around 4 times so its one of the all time greats.  Feels glorious playing it with more accurate controls, unlimited frame rate and enhanced graphics.

Tell us pc dudes!

This is a useful vid:

Essentially, once you've updated your drivers and all your programs, there are a number of different appsout there that allow you to monitor things, if that's your bag.

I'd recommend having a fiddle with your fan curves, either in the BIOS or a desktop program that allows you to fiddle around with your motherboard settings, if your mobo manufacturer provides one. To begin with, mine were whirring up and down all the time, making a right racket, but now I've set a much flatter curve consistently across all of them so they don't properly get going unless things start to get especially warm, which, with a decent CPU cooler, they rarely do.

Also, check that your monitor is actually refreshing at its maximum rate - even if you're outputting 200fps, if your monitor is set to 60hz but is capable of 144 then you won't see the added frames as your panel won't be able to keep up.

I'm hoping for some big gains with the 30/40 series cards and an uptake on DLSS support, in terms of being able to play new gen games at a reasonable framerate across the entire gen. Worked for me when the 1070 came into fruition, although that did take a good year and a half to come out after the PS4, apparently. My memory always had their respective releases much sooner, but that's not the case apparently.

I/O speed will certainly be a thing to contend with, but given the disparity between the Series X and the PS5, I can't see it being utilised massively outside of exclusive games. At least SSDs will become the norm and drive down the price of the high volume drives. No fucker will be able to accept a 1TB SSD when every AAA peddler makes 100GB open world games.

I'll still be playing roguelikes that barely taxes my current computer until the sun fucking dies out, regardless :P
