I wonder if VR players will have an advantage over flat screen players.  In a VR cockpit* it's easier to visually track targets.  Dogfighting is great in VR.

*dependant on the cockpit.  Tie fighter windows seem small and restrictive, unless there are more windows that I'm not seeing.

The last video I posted on the last page (extended interview one) they get asked exactly that question. I'm a little unconvinced, but he says that it all balances out in the play testing and there is no real advantage to either.

Do you think it's going to be worth holding out for PS5 and PSVR2 for this?

I'm not convinced the tech of the PSVR1 is good enough (resolution/pixelation)

With no sniff of the PSVR2 yet and no release window that could be a long wait. I think I'm going to look at getting a PSVRv2 for my standard PS4 initially (there are other games I want to try too anyway), then I was probably going to upgrade to a PS5 (and as Sony reiterated just this week that the PSVR will be fully supported so I can just use it there). Then if/when the PSVR 2 comes out I can take a view at upgrading then.

The lead designer was a bit unconvincing in this respect in that Gamespot interview. He seemed to think that the tunnel-vision view a TIE Fighter pilot gets is actually really great for focusing them compared to the nice open cockpit of an A-Wing. I can see the cockpits causing some controversy. They have to stick to the designs we all know and love, but in practical terms some ships are going to be much nicer to fly than others due to the field of view. Multiply this by 100 for VR.

the main dev in the follow up brought up the point about imperial ships

for imperial ships like tie fighters where you have restictive views - you also have less other thinsg to worry or  foucus on in the cockit as  as ties dont have shields etc.. and so  less instruments in the field of view so he was saying that they found because of this your view is more focused straight forward (as well as the use of radar) and there is no issue

Edit** pob just beat me

Tbh from the same team as BF, I wasnt sure what to expect. Polished presentation is a given, but I was unsure about gameplay. Turns out, however, they seem to have done a pretty good job of it! I still dont think any modern day space dogfighter is quite up there with the oldies in terms of mission design, but this is as good a shout as I've seen for a while. Also, they're really caught the sense of speed and scale I sometimes find lacking. These things can whip around at dizzying levels, just as it should be.

I do find it a bit odd that they're pushing 'diverse' teams given that, y'know, the Empire are traditionally the side of posh old white dudes, but perhaps they're having to make a conscious effort to not allow anywhere for alt right wrong uns to take over. Sad if that's the case but understandable.

It's not the same team though, right? BF was developed by DICE, this is made by EA Motive (who contributed to BF2, but it was very much a DICE game).

Anyway, it looks far better than I expected really.

Have you tried the PSVR? I think I need to go have a demo because i'm convinced i'm going to see the pixels on the screen like I did the HTC hive which for me would ruin the immersive experience.

I think some of you have touched on it, but what I really loved in that gameplay clip was how smoothly they moved, especially on the k-turns and things like that. Looks like you'll have much better capacity for spacial awareness. I feel like a lot of spaceship based games can quickly devolve into just randomly turning to face different directions, hoping you get an angle on someone. This already looks a lot better in that regard .Though I don't want to discount the fact that I may just be shit at these games...

Yes, I've tried the PSVR before (the v1, I believe the v2 is better). You could definitely tell it's lower than ideal res, especially if you are looking for it. Also being honest it was noticeably not as good as the Vive when I tried that too. However during my time with it I was mostly immersed enough to just ignore it. My gut feeling is if you are focusing on flying you'll quickly forget about it (and also space being largely black might help) but I may be wrong. I'm sure others who own them will be able to provide better feedback.

It's a good point though and part of the reason why I haven't taken the jump myself yet over the years. However it definitely gave me more of a vivid experience than say my Oculus Go, and is a much cheaper entry price than buying a gaming PC and headset from scratch which I would have to do. If I knew a PSVR2 was due in say 6 months or something I'd wait, but we could be talking years still.

PSVR for sub £150 thesedays is an utter utter bargain. I paid full whack when it first came out and don’t regret it for a second.

Sure, you may see pixels or whatever when you first give it a go but once you get a game going you forget about all that.

I cant wait for this, looks ace.

I wonder if they could take inspiration from Battlefield’s Rush mode and do the DeathStar assault, each stage/phase could be like “Approach”, “surface”, “trench”, with the main aim being to blow the DS up/defend it.  Probably done already but I haven’t really played Battlefront.

Ah, the traditional Imperial Navy first-time pilot pep-talk: don't worry lads, your view may be more restricted than that of your rebel counterparts, but to make up for it you also have no shields and so will detonate long before you have to worry about dogfighting!

(this is, of course, why TIE Defenders are the way forward. Your viewport may be hot garbage, but you have so little speed and so much shielding that it doesn't really matter)

Lasers on synchronous, full power on laser recharge, and keep shunting the excess laser power to the shields. Tie Fighter cheat mode.

I'm genuinely proper excited for this. Modern X-Wing/TIE Fighter with cross play and VR.

If you sat down to write what you wanted from that, they seem to have it covered. Now I just need a suitable joystick/HOTAS setup for it.

Seeing as it’s a budget game we should probably temper the expectations a bit when it comes to the single player. I doubt we’ll get the kind of depth and variety we got in X-Wing or TIE Fighter missions but I’m sure they can add more if it’s a hit. Same for multiplayer maps and modes.

Still hyped though.

Would buying PSVR for an OG model be mental? I’m not sure old Launchy could take it.

I mean, ask in the PSVR thread but I'm fairly sure the gains from using a PS4 Pro with VR are fairly negligible.  The biggest improvement is more usb ports round the back of the machine.

Yeah, single player is going to be thin I reckon. Like a glorified CPU-controlled version of the multiplayer with basic cutscenes stringing it all together. I’m going to play the fuck out of it in VR a million times, gladly. Won’t even look at the multiplayer.

I dunno, if they can get it looking as sharp as Wipeout Omega Collection on PSVR then they're onto a winner.

This is my fear too and why I'm not completely on the hype train at the moment. There's something about the fighter classes that doesn't sit right with me and there's no place for customisation in the game I want.

Unfortunately I'm aware that the game I want isn't viable for a big publisher. Hopefully that fan made X-Wing remake will still happen at some point.

In anticipation of this, I tried playing BF2 Starfighter Assault using the cockpit view.  Turns out I’m a bit shit so going to have to practice that as I expect there won’t be a back of the ship view option.

I run PSVR of my launch machine. No more issues than anything else.
