This is awesome! Tried it the other day! Great example of what is possible and from Star Wars Squadrons.

 

Fingers crossed this will be awesome. Can't go far wrong can they? It's Star Wars!!!! :)

October is the release date! Happy days and great winter gaming lined up!

 

Give me chance to clear the backlog as doubt I'll be playing much else come winter... :)

The big question is how on rails this will be. Ever since space shooters have been a thing, there's been a 'freedom range', from 100% on rails stuff like Rebel Assault and Starblade through to 'on rails with some limited movement' (Sega's Star Wars Arcade). Then you've got 'total freedom of movement within a cube' like Rogue Squadron and I guess the original X-Wing and TIE Fighter games, although the infinite expanse of space makes them feel really freeing. At the extreme end you've got your Elite-type games where you can go wherever you want whenever you want at FTL speeds.

 

I'm thinking the Rogue Squadron/X-Wing 'cube shaped mission area' approach would be the most likely. I really hope it's not a heavily scripted affair where you are essentially guided around bombastic events occurring in front of your eyes. Ultimately it'd be nice to have a space-based Star Wars game where you can fly between systems of your own volition.

Yeah I saw, wonder if Jacen Syndulla will make an appearance, they seem to be tying a lot of stuff from Rebels and the Mandalorian together it seems and I'm already looking at what VR headset to get, might have to get myself a nice 2070GTX to go along with it as well.

[nerd mode] A squadron made up of different ship types, operating immediately after Return of the Jedi and overseen by Hera Syndulla should be Alphabet Squadron, but it doesn’t look like them in the trailer. [/nerd mode]

I’m assuming so (I’ve preordered via cdkeys) they are marketing the  vr so you would think they would say if vr is only. Via steam Which they don’t so I’m guessing it’s in the game regardless of you buy steam epic or origin

ok spoke with EA support and they advise the VR Functionailty will be availble regardless of where you buy it from (Origin,steam or epic) :)on side note is this going over board that im temped to wear my old xwing pilot costume while playing this ( im sure i can squeeze the helemt over my rift while playing)

lol to be fair these days i look more like porkins! (and def wouldnt fit in the costume)   what you cant see from the pic as its cropped is my nephew who was about 4 at the time dressed as a mini darth vader trying to lightsbaer battle me (well more like knee cap me)

TL;DR: Videos now posted at the bottom of this post :) 

 

Just watched the live stream... they showed gameplay... I'm pretty excited...

 

Main points were:

  • Started with an interview with the Creative Director of Motive and he said the dev team see it as a spiritual successor to the 90's flight games
  • Gameplay looks like a full 'space cube' experience rather than any rails, and the ships looked as if they will feel really fast and the shinies look impressive
  • Mechanics wise you have the power/shield management stuff in there from the originals, targeting and also some zero-g drift manoeuvres (like fly forwards then flip and fire/turn)
  • Single player has mission structures jumping between both sides with cutscenes, not sure but thought I saw a hub like area which could be Alliance ish maybe? New and existing characters in it.
  • Multiplayer is basically team deathmatch dogfights, or a fleet mode where you start in a dogfight and then push enemies back to capital ships and battles can swing backwards and forwards (similar to the Battlefront mode)
  • Only looks like the 8 already revealed ships are available initially
  • Squadrons can configure ship choice and a range of mods/tech to create a load out you want to use (e.g. target jamming and stealth, heavy bombardment, tractor beams to hold enemies while your mates shoot them, etc...)
  • Everything is apparently in-game unlockable
  • The whole game is available in VR from launch
  • Cross-play support (both platform and VR/non-VR) from launch

 

Also Gamespot have released an interview video too (also below) with a more detailed chat about the way the game is supposed to play. A few additional points from that:

  • The team had a gap after the Battlefront II mode development, were fans of the 90's games so they built a prototype of a modern X-Wing successor in a week and pitched it to get the green light 
  • More sim/skill based at it's core but with easier entry points for less hardcore people
  • Squad briefing room area pre-battle is a social hub to build squad setup and decide tactics
  • Mentions VR and HOTAS
  • Built in the Frostbite engine on the foundations of the VR work done in it by Criterion Games (for the X-Wing VR experience).
  • Zero-G drift manoeuvres are designed to create more dynamic flight patterns and avoid "death loop" style dogfights and more agile flight paths around capital ships, etc...
  • Game uses a 'glory' currency for cosmetics which is earned in game, also has components for ships (these are equipment rather than levelled things) to change lasers out, etc...

 

I want to see some more but (especially in VR) I think it has the potential to be incredible.
