What do you think a TIE defender should look like? That’s the one I know (as a LEGO Star Wars fan only - wasn’t aware of the ship except in LEGO)

Yep, that's how I recognise the Defender too, from the X-Wing miniatures game and from Star Wars Rebels.

It's definitely different to the Defender in the X-wing miniatures game:

Pretty big difference.

I agree, those two images are nothing alike.

In other words the one on the right is not the same as the Defender in the miniatures tabletop game. I don't know about the Lego or Rebels variant, that might be different again. No need to be facetious.

The joke is the image doesn't display. Might just be my browser then:

For those of you who played both these ships back in the day, what sort are they? The TIE looks like it’s big on lasers, but the name suggests more of a tank? The B-wing I have no idea at all what role it’s supposed to perform in-universe, other than being bloody cool.

The B-Wing (BLADE WING because it's badass), is basically an assault bomber. It's faster and more manoeuvrable than the Y-Wing traditionally, and acted as its replacement in the later war. It usually has 3 powerful lasers and 2 ion cannons as standard, but no turrets. Also lots of missile ordnance, rather than bombs.

The Tie Defender is actually very similar in terms of assault utility, and kind of the Empire's answer to the B-Wing (sort of a counter to it). Unlike other Ties it has shields, but it's more of a space superiority fighter like the X-Wing, only it's a bit more manoeuvrable and faster, but slightly less durable... It usually has two ion cannons, and quad lasers like the Interceptor. Usually has a good amount of missiles, but not as much as a Tie Bomber. Maybe similar amounts as an X-Wing.

Also, very important difference of the Defender: it has a hyperdrive so it can operate independently of capital ships. I doubt this will be important in Squadrons though if there's no new single player missions.

Defenders also could equip tractor beams to grab hold of ships, so will be interesting if that's a loadout option.

Takes a while. Just pick the throttle / roll layout you prefer and leave it alone. Then get used to pointing the craft in space rather than the usual flight sim method of rolling then 'pulling up' to turn faster.

A recent patch fixed a bug which somehow knackered diagonal stick inputs which didn't help.

Yeah the controls do feel weird at first but they did click pretty quickly for me. I means you can quickly slow down to turn sharply (in the sweet spot) or even stop your ship dead so you can focus on taking something out.

I’ve really enjoyed working my way through this slowly on PC, it feels very pure old school Star Wars and very satisfying to play. I know it might make me sound like a child but the explosions are very cool especially when you take out something right in front of you. A really nice surprise of a game.

Why do you suggest this? I use the traditional roll and pitch method of turning and I don’t believe it gives me any problems. It just depends which way round you have yaw/roll mapped, surely?

I see... I was concerned I was doing it wrong and you had just provided me with the crucial information that would prevent me getting my ass kicked, lol.

I finally started on the story missions (did it all backwards) and was that actually Denis Lawson reprising his role as Wedge? If not, it’s a perfect Scottish-pretending-to-be-American impersonation, and far more attention to detail than I would expect find in this kind of game.

Have they tweaked the ship handling since the patch? I played it for the first time in a couple of weeks last night and it felt amazing - I swear the X-Wing was rolling more quickly and the whole handling felt better. Also has it been patched for better graphics yet? I'm sure it looked better on XSX but maybe I was imagining it.

It’s finally clicked.... went back to default controls and played it like an FPS and not a flight sim. Much better. Low res aside, it’s ace in PSVR. Does the PS5 make a big difference to PSVR?

It's looks much better. Much...

Can't wait to play now. Downloaded it last night but was too tired to start fiddling with the PSVR on the PS4 to get it on the PS5.
