Turns out there's the rest of the squadron to fight as well. I really shoulda learned how to read that radar for threats. I thought I was getting hit by

the gravity plumes it mentions from the wreckage of the big ship.

Totally not killing this guy, yet. You guys really don't want me in your squadron; trust me on this.

Swap the 1 for a 2. Game is a mess, also through origin. It just needs patching.

SteamVR this end, which looking at the internet might actually be a chunk of the problem at the moment.

As I've only got about an hour on it at the moment trying to get the settings right, I may just refund it and go with Origin.

When it wasn't jerking around, the experience felt incredible. Like, I want to pull those levers on the dashboard.

That took too long on a PS4 controller. I needed to avoid his fire AND that of four A-wings; take them out, then whittle him down with lasers to the point of no return (avoiding head-on jousts - too damaging); only THEN could I throw the kitchen sink at him.

My X-Wing fu is rusty.

There's another patch - apparently it improves the Steam VR issues, but still doesn't fix the framerate lock bug - which is my issue:  From the devs on reddit:

Alongside the rank 0 issue, it's one of our top priorities.

They're working on it at least, I just feel like a mug for buying it two weeks ago.

I got my Thrustmaster HOTAS on Wednesday, spent the week trying to tune it to my liking by playing solo Fleet battles - in the process I discovered I had made a huge cock-up, as when I switched over from the Hori I duplicated all the settings the way I had them (100% sensitivity etc) but turns out the default for the flight stick is 50%. Also flight stick and controller sensitivity settings are separate menu items, which I hadn’t noticed.

Sorted that out, and finally I am turning in performances I’m not horribly ashamed of. I’m not winning the battles singlehanded or anything, but I at least feel like I could be a contender.

And then... the stick develops a constant drift to the right, and deadzone settings don’t prevent it from happening. Googled it, and what do you know, apparently every single person who has ever owned this stick (or the Xbox/pc version) has had the same fault develop, usually within a week or two. Bloody wonderful.

Cheap sensors, shoddily fitted seems to be the consensus. In my case it’s the roll motion but lots of people have it develop with pitch, yaw, even the throttle. It’s not sold in Japan, this was imported by a Japanese company selling on Amazon. I doubt I can return it,  or get a replacement under warranty (not that it would matter as the new stick would fail too).

I guess I’m going back to the Hori and learning to deal with the throttle :/

I couldn’t stop myself from opening up the joystick base and having a poke around.

(spoilered for being a bit OT)

Spoiler

I located the two potentiometers for the x and y axis, and just gave them a gently press to make sure they were properly sitting in their housing.

That fucked it completely - the roll drift disappeared but it introduced a downward pitch drift, and when I tried to counter it the upward input was jerky and kept stopping. Oops. This always happens when I try to fix something, I fix it to death.

Tried open brain surgery on it, poking around while switched on and connected to the game. Through trial and error I ended up putting a slip of laminated film behind each potentiometer, and fixing it in place with a little bit of masking tape. I didn’t have any drift after that. But when I moved it left and right it would move up or down respectively at the same time. Sometimes as much as 45% (degrees, not percent obvs) with no vertical input at all. WTF!!

That suggested to me there was some electrical interference, so I went a step further and unscrewed the circuit board. Didn’t see anything obviously dodgy about it, but when I tested the stick with everything disassembled like this (and after tightening the stick tension screw), it worked pretty well. So I reassembled it once, problem came back, did it all again, problem more or less gone.

No more drift, and no phantom input that I can tell (it goes up or down a couple of degrees sometimes when going left or right, but that could be explained away by my lack of finesse with the stick and shouldn’t be a big handicap).

I’m pretty sure these problems will return with a vengeance, but for now I seem to have got it in a playable state again. Yay!

This thread is turning into a bit of a one-man show...

(also most of the recent talk has been about PC problems and Joystick problems)

Spoiler

I got one good evening of play out of my Thrustmaster stick surgery, and by this morning it had crapped out again. The pitch was completely knackered this time. It would often just freeze completely when I tried to pitch up.

It’s not really surprising because I didn’t do much other than poke around and try and get things to sit more securely inside. Plan B - I went shopping for some electrical cleaning spray (meant for cars, safe for plastic) and an air-duster, disassembled to the same stage as before, but then also detached the joystick housing and lowered it just enough to be able to pop out the potentiometer. Gave it a good spray of cleaning solution from the rear, twisted the rotating part through it’s whole range, sprayed it again and then blasted it with the air-duster. Reassembled it and voila, it’s working. For the time being.

Google tells me that a worn out potentiometer can be given extra life through cleaning, but ultimately needs replaced. How cheap are these parts if they get worn out after a week of use?

Back to the game, I think the stat calculation is a bit off. It says I have an *average* of 273 kills and 165 deaths in co-op Fleet mode, lol. I can assure you this is not correct, I usually get about 6 kills and twice as many deaths.

I'm so looking forward to playing this.  It's installed and my x-55 hotas and quest 2 are ready ... Just waiting on the vr stutter patch and I'm in.  Only installed/ updated it ... Never loaded it up yet.

Can't believe I managed to hold back.  I know it's going to be worth it once it's patched.

Don't know where I've developed that level of self-control.  All control will be lost when those new AMD graphics cards are released right enough.

You should probably load it up, you may be one of the lucky ones who's not been affected by the bug.

I really like the look of this, setup will be base PS4, PSVR and Pad and mostly interested in Campaign but maybe a try of coop fleet battles Vs AI.

Should I?

I finished it last night and really enjoyed the campaign,  felt really polished for a PSVR game.  Took me around 8 hours and I generally did a mission a night which, for me, is perfect for VR sessions

I got this on PS4, worked through the majority of the campaign and jumped on for a few quick matches online.managed about 5 in total.

Matched up against folk in Germany and the US in different games and I was wondering how that would affect server lag given that I'm in australia?

Also being dropped in games with folk who are level 25 and 50, I was almost getting spawn killed and won't be back until there's something done about matchmaking.

Pity, I generally love star wars and really enjoyed starfighter assault in BF2, this seems a more in depth and interesting experience if they sort out some of the issues

I picked up the game on launch, played some campaign and played some multi. Hadn't touched the multiplayer in a week when I came back to it last night...got totally wrecked across the board; thought I'd play support roles and kitted myself out with extra shields etc but I didn't make a difference. I need to do some reading/watching to catch up the best way to do things.

We tried multi a number of times on launch week. It's a huge nope from me. From getting almost one shotted regularly, to rattling enemies with rounds but them never seeming to die, to being spawn killed, to being matched to people in USA and dealing with lag issues it was just frustrating as fuck.

It doesn't help that the controls are really tricky to get used to. I can kind of do it using southpaw, but they're not easy. I wish we could get a control setup like the planes in BF3 / BF4. They were perfect and easy to fly. Flight controls from Battlefield 1 / 5 / Battlefront and this all fucking suck.

Speaking as someone who is currently level 35, level is no indicator of ability (I suck - 0.37 win rate, 0.92 KDR). You shoot up the ranks fairly rapidly if you play it often, especially if choosing a random faction or playing with friends.

I’ve also often seen people higher level than me being some of the worst scorers in the match.

There’s a learning curve for sure, but sometimes the other team is just too strong and have nothing left to shoot at, so you take all the fire when you spawn. The tables can turn though.

edit - the controls are 100% customizable. You can set it up pretty much any way you want.

We heard you the first time!

(11 is my best I think)

Have you ever had a bad round though? Like, 2 kills and 7 deaths?

I generally do the best in a TIE bomber with 4000 hit points in the hull - but I have the most fun in an X-wing, drifting round asteroids, stunning enemies with ion shots. I can’t get on with the A-wing or Interceptor against human opponents, and in a support ship I focus so much on supporting my team I usually ignore all the people gunning for me and promptly die.

I finished my 10 matches for a ranking tonight - the last one was for the most part in our favour, I thought we had it in the bag with all but one of their power systems destroyed and our capital ship still quite healthy, but we switched to defense before we could finish it off and managed to lose It all in that one phase :/

I got given one rank above the bottom one, hotshot-1 I think it was.

I tried again so as not to end the evening on a downer and we got hammered again. I don’t want to throw up excuses but I was tailing one guy as he headed for the MC-75, pelting him with laser fire constantly for... I don’t know, 5-10 seconds? It was a really long time that I had him dead-to-rights. Yet I got jumped from behind and killed first.

I'm just looking for a bit of friendly rivalry I guess...

I need to get back to this as I've barely played since the launch weekend. Think my best kill score is about 5 (but I was about 5-8 I think) but I've only played three or four dogfights though. Will do my best to get some more time in the furball and will post up when I've got something worthy of mentioning properly :D

Just on this , I've read on Kotaku.au that there's lots of folk having similar issues with the matchmaking and ranking as well as  hits not registering, more prevalent for players in oceania.

I just had my first game of Fleet Battle in a week or so and it all seems to good to me. We were up against lvl 40+ imperials and did ultimately lose but it was close. The TIE Bomber does seem to be able to take some insane punishment if geared for hull strength, but I got about a 3 KDR playing in the A-wing and even managed to knock out a sub-system on a jammy attack run.

Something a bit screwy with one of my fleet battles tonight. The match started at Esseles, I went directly to the enemy raider to try and take it out - it killed me in the process, but someone destroyed it while I was in the respawn timer and we shifted to attack phase. I respawned, was rushing to the frigates and then boom - we got the star destroyer exploding cutscene and we won the game.

I got the award for 100% accuracy because I only fired at the raider (couldn’t miss) and my lowest death count with just the 1 in a fleet battle. Hmmm.

It didn’t get counted because someone dropped out - speaking of which, it’s quite frustrating trying to see a match through to completion and have it be ranked due to how regularly people are dropping out. I’ve done 23 matches but only got my 10 ranked matches trophy within the last three.
